Thank feck Blind is out, he was shocking lately and he never gets dropped.

With all these absences I still wouldn't want us to start Fellaini.

    Well after seeing that squad:

    De Gea

    Varela--Smalling--Rojo--Darmian

    Schneiderlin--Fellaini

    Lingard--Mata--Memphis

    Martial

subs: Romero, CBJ, Williams, Schweinsteiger, Carrick, Valencia, Rashford

Or it will be Darmian RB and Borthwick LB. We're out.

Swap Fellaini out for Bastian despite his lack of match fitness, and I think that's the best we can do. And Jackson in for Darmian at left back.

Just checked into my Manchester hotel and looking forward to attending tonight's game!

Just such a shame we are so up against it. If it were a SAF side I'd have dared to dream about a magical comeback but those days are long gone.

Just hope Liverpool don't score til late so the game has some meaning. Else will be a total waste of time!

    We are going 352 apparently

United squad: De Gea, Romero, Valencia, Darmian, Varela, Smalling, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson, Rojo, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Fellaini, Carrick, Lingard, Mata, Memphis, Martial, Rashford

    De Gea
    Smalling - Carrick - Rojo
    Lingard - Schneiderlin - Fellani - CBJ
    Mata
    Rashford - Martial

    :nervous:

I don't think I can handle another 90 minutes of Fellaini jogging around fouling people.

If they score first It'll be interesting to see and hear the atmosphere.
Yeah agreed. In the Moyes era we were routinely hammered by the big teams, but at that time I think we all viewed it as a period of transition. When Liverpool went 3-0 up at Old Trafford we sang louder still, showing fantastic defiance.

But most seemed to have moved past that now. If they score first tonight it could easily turn to boos, which would be a shame on such a big night.

I had written this off but feck if I'm not pumped up for this.

I don't care if we lose the tie, just please beat these tonight.

But I'll probably see Fellaini in the starting line up and proceed to cry the whole 90 minutes instead.

That really is a terrible squad.

Yes, but sometimes you can't absolutely rely on whatever he says being 100% correct.

That's true, but Bastian is probably in the "He shall play 60 minutes" phase of the philosophy, so maybe LvG is looking at him playing the second half.

We are gonna smash these bastards and dump them out into the bins they love so much.

If Blind is out, we must play Carrick or at least Schweinsteiger.
Smalling-Rojo Schneiderlin-Fellaini is a shocking way to play out from the back.

It's frustrating that LVG doesn't think Schweinsteiger isn't fit enough to start. I'd rather he started and played the first hour, then take him off. There's no use holding him back until it's too late.

He talked sense and gave straighforward answers in the presser yesterday so I guess Vangle didn't like it.

    He'll probably start anyway.

    Think LVG will play :
    ---------------DDG--------------
    Varela--Smalling--Rojo--Jackson
    --------Carrick----Fellaini-------
    Lindgard------Mata-------Martial
    ------------Rashford------------

But i hope to see :

    ---------------DDG--------------
    Varela--Smalling--Rojo--Jackson
    -------------Morgan-------------
    ------Bastian------Mata---------
    Rashford---------------Memphis
    ------------Martial--------------

    De Gea
    Smalling - Carrick - Rojo
    Lingard - Schneiderlin - Fellani - CBJ
    Mata
    Rashford - Martial

    :nervous:

I quite like that team actually. Well not like if there were many alternatives but given the circumstances I think we could do worse with what we have available.

Carrick and Schneiderlin have both been dropped by their respective national teams so perhaps we'll see some improved performances from them as they seek to get back in before the Euro..

If we get one and they don't score I think we'll get two and bring this to extra time.

    That's LVG's plan.
He pretty much stated this yesterday.
Unfortunately, it means that we are going to play ultra defensively and will do everything in our power not to concede.
This also means that our attack will likely be very weak, as our focus will be to concede no goals.

    I would like that:

    --------------
    De Gea
    Valencia-Smalling-Blind-Rojo
    ------The Schmidfielders
    Lingard------Mata-----Martial
    ------------Rashford

Definitely, the nightmare scenario is they score in the first 20 mins or so, or the final hour or so will be painful.

Yep. Can easily see it ending 0-0 or 1-0 (either way) after a very late goal because neither team will want to give anything away for most of the game.

My local team New York lost the first leg of the playoffs 2-0 last year and we kept Columbus out the second leg and we did score but only in the last few mins so we literally had two attacks to try and level the tie. We hit the post in the last 10 seconds which was heartbreaking.

The key tonight is to not let them score. If they score it's over. We really just need to be 1-0 before the 80th min before we pile on the pressure.

I think tonight could be a special night. 2-0 down is not impossible.

I hate to get involved with the pessimism but my prediction for the match:

Liverpool to score first within the first half hour and kill the game and be very happy to sit deep and break in numbers.

We'll be playing 3-5-2 with Rojo as a wing back and Carrick at centreback. At some point we will sub on a fullback, CBJ or TFM so we can push Carrick into midfield and play 4 at the back with Rojo going central. Everyone will moan about making a fullback substitute when we need to attack.

Schweinsteiger will come on next, for Schneiderlin who will be fairly absent all night leaving Carrick and Schweinsteiger pushing up the field and passing sideways probing for a non existent gap as our forwards amble around a final third that looks like Picadilly Circus at rush hour.

Final substitution is Lingard for the disappointing Memphis. Lingard looks bright but does absolutely feck all.

We need the spirit of @Barca84 to have any chance here

Indeed we do and I hope so. Unfortunately we don't have a Robbo on hand to drag us through so I fear the worst.

An early goal from us could put the shit up them though

This is a team captained by Jordan Henderson after all

Pegged this for a draw, don't expect much tonight. The days of OT being a fortress are long behind us.

Well, if we get a draw, that will be in line with OT being a fortress, ie. you cant beat MUFC at OT.
And looking at the stats, this may sound weird, but MUFC's home form in the league, is excellent - we have the 2nd best home record. It's our away form which is dismal.
A win or draw is definitely the most likely result. The problem is this 2 goal deficit and the need to probably score 4 goals. Our first team cannot score that many goals.
