Not a chance in hell at 2-0 down and no away goal.
Highly unlikely! However, I looked up a somewhat old article which included games up to Arsenal's 1-3 defeat to Monaco in February 2015. At this point, in the European Cup, there had been 281 instances where a team won the first leg and only 6 times in those games did a team go on to reverse the deficit and go through. The only time a 2 goal deficit was reversed according to the article was in the 1970's where Benfica managed to win the second leg against Ajax 3-1, after Ajax already got the same result in the first leg (Benfica went on to win in Extra Time).

I am a bit sceptical of the information though, as we seem to be the only team to overturn an exact scoreline of 2-0 in the first leg, which was under David Moyes when we lost away to Olympiakos 2-0, before a Robin van Persie hat-trick gave us the 3-0 home victory we needed to go through. (This wasn't in that article for some reason, even though I'm sure it happened before that Arsenal-Monaco tie).

So, we've done it before... But I still think we'll go out. For what it's worth though, I don't think we will lose this match.

Such a shame away goals continue to count in extra time. They need to do something about that rule. I think they've already changed it in a few competitions, but not in the Champions League or Europa League as far as I'm aware.

As for possible line-up, I'm thinking LvG might go with legs and energy to hopefully have a real go at Liverpool in the first half, as going in 1-0 or better at the break is pretty crucial. However, I can also see him making cases for Darmian, Carrick and Fellaini to start, but I think all three should be on the bench personally.

    de Gea
    Varela Smalling Blind Rojo
    Herrera Schneiderlin
    Lingard Mata Memphis
    Martial
    ---
Romero; Darmian, Riley; Carrick, Schweinsteiger, Fellaini; Rashford

I think de Gea, Smalling, Blind, Rojo, Schneiderlin, Mata, and Martial are guaranteed to start. Varela is extremely likely over Darmian, while Carrick or Fellaini could easily be given the nod over Herrera. Then it's two from Lingard/Memphis/Rashford.. I've put Memphis in, but it's a tough call and I think he might stick with Rashford. I'm assuming Lingard's ban was only for one game?

Gone for a 2-1 win in the prediction, but if I was forced to pick another score it'd probably be 1-1. Regardless, I'm 99% sure we're going out unless there's a really early goal or a Red Card for the opposition.

IF the players don't feel motivated and play sharp at this game then when? The clueless manager and the players have to leave everything behind and focusing only on playing with truly Manchester United spirit that we almost lacked in every game this season.

P.S Leave that fecking Fellaini behind too.

Have no idea who's going to get played or what the score will be, not even going to try and predict unless I roll a dice.

I'd like to think LvG has noticed his usual line-up selection just doesn't work and we need a bit of switching around, and that some of the kids are playing better than our first team, but I'm not sure he will. If we play like we did against Arsenal, we might well win the match (but I think whatever we do winning by more than 2 away is beyond us right now), if we play the backwards football that's become our recent trademark there's no point in the match even taking place, we might avoid conceding but that's the best we can hope for.

It's been a while since I've been this negative.

    Did it even mention Depor-Milan?

We need all out attack to win this.

No being safe we need goals.

Basically, its a similar scenario to when we played Wolfsburg. We needed to win at all costs to stay in the CL.
What happened was that we lost 4-2 (Wolfsburg players scored 5 goals, 1 in their own net).

Maybe this time around, we will do better.

2-0 is always a dangerous lead in football, but unless we score early and obviously first, it's almost hopeless. Liverpool will gradually go deeper into their cave to protect the lead as the game progresses.

Do Klopp's LFC play like that? ie. park the bus?
I always thought Klopp's LFC always attack, regardless of the score line. Even if they are 6 goals up, they still attack.

I don't mean to talk smack but your team is seriously awful on paper these days. Your attacking options are way below what they should be. There is Mata, Martial (who should be in a role Welbeck was under ferguson, not your primary attacker) and then just a bunch of kids who are not ready to carry that burden by any stretch.

DDG and Smalling aside, your defence is completely forgettable.

There's loads of players getting regular starts who should be wondering if they are good enough to even be backup for such a club. Squad overall is decent, but the drop in quality in the starting XI in the last few years has been immense. And no one except DDG and Smalling have really improved as players after ferguson left.
It's kind of common knowledge that our squad isn't good enough. What's your point?

I am only recently realising just how much it has changed.

There is only so much LVG can do with that really. Even if he is one of your worse performers himself.

He's had quite a bit of money to make it better

    3-1 United.

You just know we will get fecked over by the away goals rule.

I feel that we will score early but soon after they will score too and it will be a uphill battle from there on. Hope I'm wrong :)

If we do win this it should be a big boost for the city game, and then if we win that one too our season will have come back to life. It is definitely time for our players to stand up because we don't want to be put to the sword by our two most hated rivals.

We are very light in an attacking sense so its not really looking good but hopefully we can score early and have one of those good days that we rarely see.

In the summer when we had Rooney, VP, Hernandez and were looking for more, if you'd been told we'd be relying on an 18year old and a 20year old as our main attackers, you wouldn't have believed it would you!

I know, its shocking how we let this happen.

I have no confidence in us getting a result, but I'm actually looking forward to seeing how LvG sets us up in a match where we're already 2 goals down.

Same as ever. Fellaini will start in the middle and we'll be ineffective, sadly there won't be nothing new to be seen tomorrow.

Basti off at the 60 minute mark to keep him good for the derby.

I have to applaud the people saying MUFC will be up for this game. You guys have kept the optimism so much longer than I could manage. Well done folks!:)

I think this is going to be a real stinker. I think liverpool will want to kill the tie within the first 10 mins, while MUFC try to get into their defensive mindset. I fully expect to see a extremely conservative lineup, maybe 2-3 CDM's in almost a back 5 kind of situation, and I'm just dreading this turning into a similar game like the 3-0 at arsenal. Liverpool will be that hungry for a euro double over MUFC and I fear they will hit us like arsenal did.

I'm not hoping for a loss, I just think it's very likely. An if it is completely one-sided, I expect LVG to finally and completely lose the entire fanbase.

Ever had the feeling that there is absolutely zero point in even turning up for a game?

We wontwin or even try to win
We won't do the rivalry any justice at all in terms of passion
It will be unspiring , awful to watch dirge football
No matter how bad the result Van Gaal will not be sacked for months, possibly years and we'll have to put up his smug face in the after match interview, telling us how amazing he is
Our board are knobs, and will continue to not give a stuff about us, this match or any semblance of good football.

    2-0 loss

Hand on heart , I really dont expect us to win by the 3 goals needed, but what I do expect is the team to go out and play with passion and to want to win, not just to turn up go thought the motions and end the week collecting a nice fat wage.
I can handle getting beat if we fight for a result.
