I'm pretty sure Rooney got dropped last season too. Came back in to the team and started bagging for fun for a couple of months, fingers crossed for that.

"for fun" against Derby, Sheffield Utd and relegation fodder like Newcastle and Swansea.

    No Rooney, no Fellaini.

    Caftards rejoice!!

I looks a good line up. But I have said that a lot recently.

Why are we starting lingard? and again why is it not herrera and pogba closer to the striker, with the anchorman holding the fort, that would be the best to get out of herrera and pogba so they can press leicester. I am glad both fellaini and rooney who were the flagship of the Moyes era are dropped, but still a 433 with someone anchoring the midfield

I see folks are still trying to equate Carrick performances against lower-tier teams to his performances against any decent side that presses him.

    Carrick would be destroyed today.
Why do you assume it's based on a meaningless game and not because our midfield is trash?

    "I'd still play him"
"Wouldn't surprise me if he comes on and scores the winner"

Some people just refuse to admit he's done.

Even if he did come on and score the winner it wouldn't make him any less shit.

You can say that for any midfielder we can put out there today. None of our options have shown they can handle pressing. It's not as if Herrera has set the world alight against quality oppositions. We admire him exclusively for his goals/performances in League Cup. Fellaini/Pogba simply do not have the passing abilities Carrick does. We could (won't) get destroyed no matter who we put out there. Might as well have someone with a passing range of Carrick. He shouldn't play if he isn't fit though.

Is Mhiki injured? Don't see why he can't make the bench also today. Did the 45 mins against City disappoint Jose that much..

Mata in the lineup makes it improbable that it will be a 4-3-3, but even the positions of the players in a 4-2-3-1 is difficult to predict. The right-wing could be Mata, could be Lingard and could be Rashford!

For fun? For couple of months? You're getting desperate, aren't you?

    Is shaw injured?

Happy that Rooney is dropped but I'd have preferred to see Mata on the right with Fellaini/Carrick instead of Lingard in a 4-3-3. That team lacks balance.

Hopefully Shaw takes this as a kick up the arse, he's had a terrible injury and he's done fantastically well to get back playing. Clearly he's overweight in my eyes, he's always struggled with his weight and it was an issue Van Gaal actually handled excellent, hopefully this has now been noticed and he can get back in the condition he was in before injury.

At long last he's dropped. Let's go and get the result now and cement this. Lingard starting is questionable, but with the injuries I'm not too surprised.

I hope Smalling is the right sided CB.
With Bailly he never is. What we should worry though, is that Smalling gets paired with Slimani and Bailly with Vardy.

Can't say I like the lineup. Hope we win but really didnt want Lingard back in or Fellaini dropped. Rooney out needed to be done 3 games ago but better late than never.

Only difference I would have made is somebody like Carrick for Mata, pushed Pogba up to be more of a 433. But today, we need Zlatan to do what he did last game for Rashfords goal, come deeper and have Rashford and Lingard running off him into the box (and not stay out wide).

takes what ? , he is out injured , if he was fit he would be playing.
What do we drop players now after a bad game ?

We should play with 3 in midfield, I'm not sure that we can control midfield with Herrera and Pogba

We don't aim to control midfield anymore, and with the exception of LVG, that was never our game. Jose and Fergie's style of play is all about fast transitions.

Fans have become obsessed with this 'midfield control' since Pep's Barca then Spain and Germany's dominance at international level.

Tonight you'll get to know Slimani. He will do his thing. He always delivers in the big matches. You better be shitting your pants everytime there's a cross to your box. In the Prem he has the liberty to use his strenght better so he'll bully your defense all match. With Vardy running in behind too... it's a perfect partnership.

    I still think you'll win though. 2-1

I'm relieved Musa is not on the bench for Leicester. Imagine United chasing a result and having that guy running around our defense…

Obsessed with winning teams, just like our last 5 title winning teams under Fergie always had Carrick or Scholes in doing the controlling or Jose having Alonso or Fabregas in his last 2 title winning sides, it's an important role in midfield for a top side.
