    Midfield still lacks balance.

Everyone seems pretty happy with the line-up which usually means defeat!

    Hope I'm wrong.
Totally unbalanced. Pogba and Herrera as our two pivots?? I highly doubt this will end well for us but hopefully it will. Just happy to see Herrera play

Start of 2016 he scored some goals over a 1-2 month period. Decent one against Newcastle I remember.

Jokes were made about him going for the 2016 Ballon d'Or etc.

4 in 5 game period. Thats now bagging for fun, hehe.
Guess some need a coping mechanism lol

If we don't perform today then Rooney deserves his chance to get back into the starting line up next league game,

Still can't believe Leicester fecking City actually won the Premier League.

The team feels like a gamble, a bit like bringing in Mkhi and Lingard for the derby. I must admit I'd expected to see Fellaini or even Blind playing in midfield. Not Carrick because I didn't see him playing twice in a week.

Given the issues around Rooney, and the way his position was affecting the whole balance of midfield, it's probably inevitable though. Especially with Shaw injured, though "available to play", and Rojo's lack of form. Of course maybe Lingard will be playing left back and Blind in the middle - now that would be a dramatic gamble.

Just joining in.. Looks like a excellent lineup. Very excited about Rooney getting benched. Is micky injured any chance?

Think it could be a good game for Mata today. He's playing as the No. 10 against a 4-4-2 today so he can get the space he needs plus his physicality won't work against him as he's basically a free man. 4-2-3-1 is a good formation as well because if we went 4-3-3 Vardy and Slimani would sit on the DM and make it more difficult for us. They might actually drop into midfield anyway but we'll see how it goes. Herrera and Pogba is a good two since their midfielders are defensive. Plus we have some who can help knock the ball around in Herrera and he's better than Carrick for this opposition team because he's going up against an energetic player.

The team feels like a gamble

It is, cos it feels so unbalanced. Pogba and Herrera i believe need somebody behind them (like carrick, fellaini or morgan) instead of somebody ahead of them.

Baily and Smalling is still a worry but im happy to go with that with Shaw out and put Blind out left. (rather than Rojo which would have been a bigger gamble).

    'Herrera playing deep'
    Maybe it will be 4-3-3.

Lingard is staying very central as United go through their phases of play warm up. It looks like United will start with Herrera playing deep with Pogba and Lingard pushed further forward. Mata is warming up on the right with Rashford on the left, either side of Ibrahimovic.

Lingard has done well in that central role before, especially in the derby win at the Etihad Stadium last season. Still, some United fans will have hoped to see Mata playing centrally with Rooney on the bench.

No fellaini AND no rooney .. party everyone!!
Herrera can hopefully do the deeper playmaking role and carrick was never starting so soon after the last, but his type as holding is the next step.

And lastly, where is mkhitaryan? Still injured?

So Rooney has been dropped, 90% of United fans wanted it , if we play well and continue to without him, he could struggle to get back in the team, but if it is some has last few games, what then ?
Rooney is not the only problem and Lingard is not the answer, Pogba needs to be played thought the middle.

    Plus No Rojo.
Have a feeling Lingard or Blind will be the scapegoat if things go wrong.

Feck off Neville, putting pressure on the Rooney replacements...

Just got out of bed. What a great lineup this is. We're going for the kill, really appreciate it. Good day, lads, good day.

So Mahrez needs 6 games to play himself into form, but it's up to Mata and Lingard to take this one game and prove dropping Rooney was right?

With these bench options, I'm assuming all Shaw, Mkhitaryan and Martial to be injured. It would be suicide otherwise.

Exacty. Herrera, Mata / Mkhi need to start regulary for sometime to see how the team gels. This team needs time. Just dropping rooney for 1 game isn't going to make much of a difference unless United win comfortably.

    Plus No Rojo.

Well they are the next obvious weak links, but the right choices considering the injuries. I think/hope we'll see a much improved performance.

The only issue i have with the team is if we go out their like we have in previous games and play like we've taken a fistful of horse tranquilisers, then the lack of CDM will hurt. We need to go out there and just blitz them from kick off and press them back.

Obsessed with winning teams, just like our last 5 title winning teams under Fergie always had Carrick or Scholes in doing the controlling or Jose having Alonso or Fabregas in his last 2 title winning sides, it's an important role in midfield for a top side.

You've just named four players who are creative or effective passers. That's not midfield control.

Fergies last title winning teams never controlled midfield (except against far inferior clubs) and Jose has always played fast counters to target positionally weak defenders.

All i'm saying is midfield control is not the only way to win. We don't have the players to do it anyway.
