Discussion Your Lineup Prediction

  • Winning the Europa League seems like dreamland stuff, but is still more likely than making Top 4 this season, so going all in makes sense. Twente would be a Championship side, so it shouldn't be a problem, especially at Old Trafford. But you never know these days.

    2:0.

United finished bottom in a group with Galatasaray and Copenhagen less than a year ago, and I remain unconvinced anything has changed since then. So, it's favourites only by name as far as I'm concerned.

That's quite an odd black and white way to approach it.

8 games in a group stages with all the 36 teams in a single group. 4 home and 4 away games for all teams with the 8 oppositions being different. Top 8 go directly to round of 16 while teams ranked 9th-24th will play each other in an extra qualification round to make it to round of 16. The remaining are eliminated. Thanks FM.

At least it's now a competition where a team that is in the competition from the beginning will win it and there won't be teams that got knocked out of the CL group playing in the knock-out

In 2022-23 we had to play Barcelona and Sevilla both who had been knocked out of the CL. Half the teams in the Quater-Finals were teams that had been knocked out of the CL. Still hold the opinion if we didn't have to play Sevilla we had a decent chance at winning Europa. They got some weird fecking voodoo against us in Europe.

Good game to test out the Zirkzee/Hojlund link-up.

Even if you don't start with them both, I'd like to see Bruno or Amad subbed and let Zirkzee play a little deeper with Hojlund ahead.

The Bruno, Amad, Zirkzee trio is very creative but I wonder if all 3 are needed in that area of the pitch.

Onana, Mazraoui, Maguire, de Ligt, Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Amad, Antony, Rashford, Zirkzee.

Amad as a number 10. No idea why I went with this 11 and have no idea which one will it actually be. Hojlund probably won't start yet but will get like 25-30 minutes in 2nd half. Rashford to start as he didn't last time and Antony gets to start like vs Barnsley (probably won't happen though).

Quite frustrating how we have no LB fit so Mazraoui and Dalot have to start every game. Not sure Maguire will actually start but seems like he's lost his place in league games so Europa and cups are the ones where he'll play more.

With Ugarte behind, Casemiro could again be very effective in attack. He's capable of getting plenty of assists and goals as well (especially from set pieces).

Europa is possibly our best chance to get CL football next season so it's important to start well in the competition. Win with 2,3 goals scored and perhaps a clean sheet would be perfect.

Picked this as my first OT game of the season, also first football match I'm taking the wife to.

I think we've won a grand total of one game from all the times I've attended. Sorry.

I agree with the change that teams knocked out of the Champions League group stages won’t get another shot in the Europa League.

As for the Sevilla tie, I believe it was more about our own self-implosion. In the first leg, we raced into a lead but conceded some very soft goals late on. The second leg was a disaster, with De Gea and Maguire’s errors essentially costing us the tie. We were doing well overall and, in my view, would have went on to win the competition.

Look at the goals we conceded.

Things can change quickly. We’re winning this one mate with 3+ goals being scored. Hope your wife enjoys it.

Hope so. She's grown up a stone throws away from the Spurs training ground surrounded by Spuds family and friends. So I'm hoping her bar is already set low

 A chance to get one over on them at the weekend then.

 and to think I saw us win 52 consecutive games at OT. Went from 2001-2011 including sharing a season ticket in 08/09 and we didn’t even draw a single one of the games - won every single one. Was finally undone when I went to the 6-1 against City in 2011.

I still haven't recovered from the Sevilla home collapse.

Should have been five ahead before two ridiculous own goals and a Licha injury. Think Varane hobbled off, too.

The atmosphere until those last ten minutes were opulent and exciting. Top four, a winnable European cup final, the FA Cup on and the LC sorted, all in EtH's first season. It honestly felt as though the decade-long doom finally subsided.

It is years later now and we are still trying to retrieve it. Instead of excitement, we have pessimistic attitudes about Palace away.

    Grim.

I can't believe some people pined after de Gea last year.

I would like to see how Mazraoui would fare at LB against this lot. He has been great at RB, but Dalot had been for me a bit quiet at LB. A good game to switch them, if not surely has to be Amass if he is fit to play.

I'd say Spurs are the only team that are close to us, and then maybe Bilbao, but a bit further behind.

However, overall our squad is better than theirs IMO, so there should be no excuses not to be the favorites for the competition, if we are going to take it seriously.

I assume you believe ETH is the one bottlenecking the squad and our progress, but I think right now we're way better than late 2023 (when the CL group stage was played out), and ETH has done well in cup competitions, at least.

I wonder how different the outlook would have been had we won the Europa League too in his first season. Maybe not a lot as people would probably still try to dismiss it as a 2nd rate cup.

It's honestly amusing. While there's no denying Onana's mistakes cost us during the Champions League group stages last season, the idea that De Gea should have stayed—especially on the wages he was earning—is misguided.

Onana still has a lot to prove, but letting De Gea leave was absolutely the right call.

It was only a year ago.

Would rather have Zirkee start this game. Holjund come on at the hour mark and then start the game against Spurs.

Some ridiculous goals to concede and the Old Trafford game United was in full control of the game and tie before messing it up.

A lot of change since then as De Gea,Wan Bissaka,Varane,Sabitzer,Sancho,Martial,Weghorst,Pellistri,Elanga,Fred all featured in those games.
