Seems like many of us agree but it will not happen (the dropping of Matic). I'd play midfield 3 of Fellaini, Herrera and Pogba. Front 3 Martial, Alexis, Rashford.

Super underdogs again, I'm looking forward to this. No one will expect anything from us even after the Juve thriller.

City away.. Expect absolutely nothing here.

We'll probably set up to defend... and knowing our defenders, we'll make a couple of mistakes and let them score.

Weird isn't it? I absolutely loved tonight, just like I love every United win.

    Same here, man.
There are some seriously depressed people on this forum, who want to turn even a good occasion into a sad one.
The Jose Out brigade, in particular, are a depressing bunch.

    MCFC
Regarding the MCFC game: I want to believe that we can now steamroll any team, but I am also aware that there have been many false dawns. Last year, we slammed MCFC, thumping 3 goals past them in the 2nd half, but the following match, against minnow, we lost. Is the mentality of the team now, better? Are we a better team now, than we were last year, when we finished 2nd? I'm still reluctant to say that we have finally turned a corner and can now take on almost any team.

    Luck
The other issue I wanted to talk about was "luck". Under SAF, IMO, we could be considered a lucky team. We could score goals at just the right moment, and most of the time, when you thought our luck had run out, we'd score a goal out of nowhere. Lady luck kept shining on us. When SAF left, it appeared that all our luck had run out, but in the last few matches, I can't help but feel that lady luck is now shining on us again. When Jose (in particular) needs luck, he gets it. I think back to that Newcastle match when we were 2-0 down and the press had announced that he would be sacked. We then came out in the 2nd half and inexplicably (to this day, no explanation has been offered on what took place during half time), went from 1st gear to 5th gear and put 3 goals past Newcastle in the 2nd half. Jose's job was safe. Our fans were singing Jose's name in the stadium after the match, at which time Jose stayed back and applauded them. After all the criticism and hate that he'd received in the previous weeks (from the media and some MUFC fans), Jose desperately needed some love and luck and on that day he got it.

Since then, we have had similar performances, where we offer very little in the 1st half. Something happens during halftime after which we pound the opposition, till they capitulate.
The only team to have withstood us in recent weeks were Chelsea and up until 30 seconds to go, it looked like CFC would also fall. When they equalised, they celebrated like they'd won the CL. Juve beat us at OT, but it appeared that we were not interested in winning that match - merely reduce Juve's winning margin.
We played Bournemouth - a team which had beaten Watford 4-0 (I think) and were on a winning run. The Jose haters said, "now we will play a good team and we will lose" and let's not forget that Bournemouth had not lost at home for a year. At home, these guys were near unbeatable! They even had a manager who was being mentioned as someone who should take over from Jose! We played them. And beat them.
With more belief, we went to Turin and beat the team which had not lost, at home, in the group stages of the CL, for 15 years (apparently). The unbeatable team, were beaten and they were scratching their heads. Even now, they are convinced that they should've won...but didn't.

Is it possible that lady luck, after a 5 year hiatus, is about to shine on us once again?
Could the turning point have been that Newcastle match, 2-0 down at half time, with Jose's job, allegedly, on the chopping block?
And will lady luck shine on us once more, on Sunday, against Pep's "money-no-object-break-FFP-rules" team?

Somebody tell the players they are already losing 1 nil.

Will be a very tough game against this disgraceful set of cheats.

I think we'll see the same team but we should have Fred Herrera Pogba in midfield.

Expect us to lose. So I can watch without pressure.

On a serious note, we can’t afford to start as slow as we’ve been doing.

I actually prefer us to start slow and be down at HT. Then come out in the 2nd half and blitz the opposition.
If going behind is what it takes for our players to start working hard and play with intent, then so be it.

The slow start we have yesterday could’ve easily seen us down by 3 goals at half time.

We can’t ride our luck forever.

Since LvG's second season, we are unbeaten at the Etihad, while they are unbeaten at OT. So, I do fancy our chances.

Could be a draw, but I am going with a 2-1, especially if we have a Herrera-Fellaini-Pogba midfield. Just pack the team with clinical goalscorers - Martial, Mata, Pogba, Fellaini, and bring on Fred sometime in the second half. No more sitting back, just give them as good as we get and see what that gets us.

I hope we give it all. That is what I want to see. I don't have high hopes on the result. I am guessing Matic and Fellaini will start.

It's impossible to envision Matic playing in this game. If there's one team in the world where i wouldn't want Matic playing against, particularly in the form he's in now, it's City.

    Can't possibly happen.

    Although it will, no doubt.

There's no way we'll stop them from scoring.
We can barely keep a clean sheet and they score for fun. We'll need at least 2 maybe 3 even to get something from this game and with this in mind we must set up to attack.
Mata, Martial must play. We need speed in our attack so Rashford should play also. Would also pick Sanchez in front line. Those front four will cause some problems.
Our best chance is to make it an open game. End to end.
If we let them play we'll get torn apart.

2-1 win for us. After Juve, the lads won't be in any mood to let this one go. Keep Lukaku out and play Martial, Rashford, and Sanchez up front.

If we start to think defensive then it'll be hard. Both Young and Shaw needs extra cover against the width of City. Our CB's then needs cover from our CM's. We'll end up relying on Matic who has been our weakest link so far this season. It won't end well that way. The fact of the matter is we won't have a lot of the ball anyway so we need to play players who will make it count the few times we got the ball. It would certainly help if we can keep the ball too.

I'm afraid we'll lose big, but I'm very exited to be wrong at this.

Maybe something like this could work?
    DDG
    Young-Smalling-Lindelof-Shaw
    Pereira-Herrera-Fred-Pogba
    Sanchez-Martial

I'm with you on this one, i will take a last minute winner thanks.

I hope Fred gets the nod over Matic. Unlikely though it seems. He's just much more direct and has a bit of zip about him. The City attack would love to close down Matic, he's moving like a mammoth stuck in a tar pit lately.

They're in scintillating form really - they've reacted to that defeat to Lyon in such a positive manner. Their stats for the last 11 games since:

    Won - 10
    Draw - 1
    Lost - 0
    Scored - 35
    Conceded - 2

The draw was away at Liverpool, their supposed closest contenders, which they should have won if not for the penalty miss. They're scoring for fun and we keep leaking goals, while their defence is incredibly solid. We will need some luck and we'll probably need to score at least twice to get a result.

I won't be too disappointed if we lose this game, because I expect us to. While this is petty and small-time, I don't want Liverpool to have any chance of catching up with them. If we can snatch a draw it'll be a fantastic result, but I expected us to lose this and the Juventus game, so we've already exceeded my expectation to this point. As long as we beat Crystal Palace and Young Boys later this month, we will have had a great month in what could and should have been a very tough one.

All that aside, I think we should go with the same team that started against Juventus:

    de Gea
    Young Smalling Lindelof Shaw
    Herrera Matic Pogba
    Lingard Sanchez Martial
    ---
Romero; Darmian, Bailly; Fred, Fellaini, Mata; Rashford

It was the side I predicted/wanted in the last game and so should be trusted in this one too. It's our best chance at what we should do/need to do. Keep the game as tight as we can before adding a different dynamic with the strong bench options. The team is very workmanlike, with Pogba & Martial providing the X-Factor if we can mount some attacks.

City has the ability to blow us away, but if we can stay in the game well into the second half then we obviously have a chance. Given their record though, I'm going to say City 3-1 United. As long as we don't get embarrassed by them thumping 4+ past us, I think I'd at least be content as I am very aware of what our current level is.

When you think about it, to lose this after all of the points we've been picking up would almost set us back to square one on the table. We really need to go here and win again.

The goal should be to not concede for 60 minutes. After that see if we can steal the victory, while staying compact.
idk about that, a 3-2 comeback victory sounds way sweeter. And it's not like we are going to keep a clean sheet against citeh when we can't even shutdown the likes of brighton and west ham.

    De Gea
    Smalling - Jones - Bailly - Rojo
    Valencia - Matic - Pereira - Young
    Rooney - Lukaku
They won’t be expecting this. 0-1 United.

I'd take a 1-0 loss right now. Zero confidence going into this game.

    DDG

    Young Smalling Lindelof Shaw

    Herrera Matic (:() Pogba

    Lingard Sanchez Martial

I'd rather Fred play instead of Matic and Herrera be the holding player, but that's never going to happen. Tough call between Rashford and Martial - if we want to press form the front, Rashford is key, but Martial is in such good form.

Are you seriously pondering whether to play Martial or not?

Another international break after this game. Hate them!

Despite being Managed by the King of Snooze I have confidence in the squad and predicted we'd win @ Chelsea(and if it hadn't been for Mourinho's negativity once we were ahead we probably would've done), and Juventus, so might as well go for the hat-trick and predict another win @ The Emptihad, 1-2 or 2-3 again

    Tragic post.

What's tragic about it? I wish I could be more optimistic but have you watched City play? They can score in so many different ways and our defence has not been that great.

Is that because City are soooooo good, or we're soooooo bad, or are you just generally a miserable git ?

I am more miserable than usual today to be fair but it is mostly because they are so good, the annoying cnuts.

We won there last year and we just beat Juventus. You are saying you would take a loss before the game even starts .
