We will lose and people will say it's because we didn't play 4-3-3 when it have not to do with it.

Hamstring I believe, unlikely he will play. Will be missed as he has been very effective so far. Lallana probably doubtful too.
Not ideal if both are injured.
I wouldn't call it ideal I agree but Pogba is finding his feet, Zlatan will be rested, Martial raring to go, Rashford also itching to play, Rooney on the bench...

I've never understood this fascination with formations.
As the last 2 years showed, it doesn't matter what formation we play, we can lose/draw/win, with any formation.

IMO, skill and energy levels are the most important factor.
If we start a game, lethargically (remember the Arsenal, 3-0 game?), we can lose the game within 20 minutes.
If we start the game with energy we can win the game quickly (remember the return leg at OT, against AFC last season, when we played with youngster?).

If those players, who played with intent and energy had played in other formations, I believe the result would've been similar.
Similarly, in games such as Bournemouth and Norwich which we lost last season - the formation was irrelevant. Our heads were down, energy and morale low and we lost.

Fecking hell, I hope the majority of you lot aren't in the crowd next week at Anfield.

The lack of belief in this thread is staggering. :wenger:

Sometimes a bit of modesty is better than baseless optimism. If you talk to neutrals I'm pretty sure about 95% of them would have Liverpool down to win this. Only about 55% on here do.

I can see United nicking this. Liverpool are having there usual run of good form. It always ends though, might be this game.

Dont think we'll win, just have a bad feeling about this one now.
Yeah I'm getting the same feeling. The injuries will upset our midfield and the way we press. It wouldn't be the end of the world but would certainly lift United and Mourinho.

Look like it's us pool fans with the paranoid and dark thoughts about the game.

    I was predicting a 4-1 win but now I'll take a 1-1

As sure as eggs is eggs I go from "we got this!" Too " oh fecking hell, please God!"

I am a soft old cnut!

FFS all I am seeing on my timelime is Liverpool fans going on about the ref being from Manchester, fecking idiots, he is a shite ref anyway.
But what is it , if we win it will be because of the bent ref.

They've got their excuses locked and loaded, just like the Berties did before Clattenberg officiated us to a 2-1 defeat.

    Sign of nerves.

Well this is what they call nerves. No matter how good and confident one is heading toward a challenge, the closer to the judgement day, the more doubt creeps into one's mind.

A week or 2 ago, with the run Liverpool has been on, optimism is at an all time high. People are still pumped and everything, but the closer you get to the game the pressure is starting to be felt.

The good news for most United fans on this forum is that they've already conditioned themselves to take a defeat from this game. They've been pessimistic and have built that psychological defensive mechanism to cope with a bad result by telling themselves throughout the entire week that they'll get trashed by Liverpool.

You on the other hand were most likely expecting a win and a defeat would be a shocking result which would be more of a blow than someone who was already expecting defeat.

On a personal note, I'd like to do 3 in a row at Anfield in the league. Let's make it our fortress when we play you guys over there in the league :)

I'd play 442 and tell them to attack Liverpools weak CB options.

    De Gea
    Valencia - Bailly - Blind - Shaw
    Mkhitaryan - Pogba - Herrera - Lingard
    Zlatan - Martial

Blind has to make sure when defence starts to get pressed to knock it long to Zlatan.

I actually think that a defeat hurts United more than it hurts us. If we lose it doesn't really do any serious damage to our top four ambitions (even though it would be frustrating to lose points) given that our fixtures aren't that bad between the United game and Everton in the middle of December.

If United lose though you'll be six points behind us and possibly eight points behind City, whilst having to go into an away game at Chelsea with one win in five league games and four points from fifteen. I'd also expect Arsenal and Spurs to win their games so you'd drop further behind them as well. Considering how many people (myself included) expected United to compete for the title this season, I don't think three defeats in the opening eight games is going to look very good for Mourinho.

I can't shake the feeling that you'll get a win though. :annoyed:

I'm not talking in the grand scheme of things or from the club's perspective. I'm talking about this particular game and how expectations are set from each set of fans.

Of course a loss would be disastrous and another set back for out league campaign and this game we need to get something out of it, that much is obvious. However what I'm talking about here are fans expectations for this game.

Just reading this thread you get the sense that most United fans around have already resolved themselves to a defeat(not that agree with such attitude) while Liverpool fans are buzzing around and expecting to win this game, some even think it'll be a thrashing. So after seeing how each set of fans expectations from this game, a defeat would particularly sting a lot more to those already envisioning a heavy and convincing victory.

I see what you mean. I think the general feeling is that Liverpool are favourites for this game but this fixture is never as simple as who ever is in better form at the time wins. I dread them every year because losing feels awful.

Team selection-wise, it's a tough one. I'd say the only guaranteed starters are DDG, Valencia, Bailly, Mata and Pogba.

LB will be a headache for Mourinho. Does he go for the steady but reliable Blind, the irrational Rojo or the unfit Shaw? Bearing in mind they'll probably be faced with Mané's electrifying pace the sensible option would be Shaw, but I wouldn't be surprised if Blind starts at LB.

Midfield wise do we go for the combative Fellaini to add aggression and height in a dangerous away game? Or Herrera who has impressed?

On the wings do we throw Mkhitaryan back into the XI again (epic fail last time), or do we persist with Lingard and Martial? What about Rashford? Young may have a shout too - see Mourinho's comments regarding him. I'll happily accept Memphis has no chance of starting.

    Personally, I'd pick the following:

    DDG

    Valencia, Smalling, Bailly, Blind

    Herrera, Pogba, Mata

    Rashford, Ibra, Lingard

Going with this lineup would allow us to be flexible with tactics and formation. It is quite risky though, and there's a chance we may get overrun in midfield. We'd have firepower coming off the bench in Rooney and Martial, though. Somehow, I see the Mourinho line-up being a lot more conservative.

Here's how i see Liverpool setting up.

    Klarius

    Clyne. Matip. Lovren. Milner

    Can
    Hendo. Courtinio

    Maine. Studge. Firminio.

My worry for me is can and the lack of game time.

Where do you see Utd having opportunities?

Starting with a 4-2-3-1 will guarantee that we will be overrun in midfield especially if its Mata, Pogba and Herrera. I would like us to play a 4-3-3 with Shaw coming in and Blind moving infield to DM whereas Pogba and Herrera would be pushed up to LCM and RCM respectively. I'd bring in Martial for Lingard and play Rashford on the right.

Bored now. Why did it have to be on a Monday after the useless international games?

All this focus on the referee before the match and the fact he's from Wythenshawe is not going to do us any favours... I wish they'd change it to another ref.

Any big decisions during the match and you can guarantee that it'll be at the back of his mind and the last thing he'll want given the pre-match attention is to risk calling anything incorrectly in our favour.

Is Can likely to come back in for this? Say what you will about him he was a big player for them in the Europa encounter last year.

I still hope he does start. That one performance aside, he's looked like a liability against us, and against other big sides who are able to field more natural midfielders than him. Herrera and Pogba both fall into that category.

Plus he might be rusty. And they're playing this good stuff without him in the side, so a change can only be a risk for them.

Yeah the rustiness should be a factor. He also has better players to deal with as well.

Emre Can has said Milner is the best penalty taker he's ever seen  - guaranteed Milner will miss his next pen.

I want Martial to replace Rashford for this one. Start with Lingard on the right and Martial on the left, then unleash Rashford in the second half on a (hopefully) tired Liverpool defence.

Feels similar to the one against City. Liverpool under Klopp seem to be better. Have a feeling that Liverpool might just run away with the game if United do not start well. Hopefully Rooney doesn't start.
