Everyone is expecting us to lose this, so that probably means we'll win tonight, annoyingly delaying Ten Hag's inevitable sacking.

Was there for the game in 2009 and arrived 10 mins late so missed the goal. Spent the evening shitting it. Porto are also not as good as they were back then, although they seem to be a semi-regular CL knockout team.

I'm sure they will have more energy, pace and technically be on another level but we still might get a result. I also feel like a win would just be bad for us in the long-term. Really feel demoralised under Ten Hag.

That's that saddest part here isn't it, I'm not wishing for a loss but I don't think anyone will be cheering or upbeat if we win. Terrible situation.

I think we'll lose tonight because we simply can't match a team (of any quality, really) that comes out with energy and pace and takes the game to us. We'll get overrun. Maybe there's a comeback in it if they only score one and then sit back but they are at home so they'll have every incentive to just steamroll us once they see how fragile we are.

That is, sadly, part of being a fan.

It’s a rough patch for us but that rough patch has included 3 domestic cup finals and 2 wins along with European football. United have still had a much better 10 years than 99% of clubs, we are financially strong enough to return to where we want to be but you shouldn’t stop watching/caring just because we aren’t as dominant as we once were. Well…you can…there was that guy on here who announced he was leaving the caf essentially because he wanted to always win and had lost patience though. Not sure he understood how competitive sport works.
Pretty much. I wonder how some people would cope following a team who's not been successful at all. I tend to look at other parts of the club more when the first team is frustrating me, so like the academy or the women's team. There's always good parts of the club, you just hope all parts are performing well at the same time.

I would never stop watching and I would NEVER want us to lose just so a manger would get sacked and I have seen posters say this quite a few times.
I have been a United fan for all my life , seen the very good seen the very bad.
I nearly always go into a match optimistic, even matches like today after the shocking display last weekend.
If some fans cant take United at their worst and right now we are not even close to being the worst, they don't deserve United at their best and we are also very far away from that.

I hope the players professional pride kicks in and this is a turning point in the season and we go on a run now(could happen) so come on lads pull your fingers out FFS you've made your point, you win,ETH's gone at the end of the season regardless.

Experience and keeping hold of the ball. That used to be the building blocks of a good away performance in Europe.

Play a proper three man midfield of Ugarte, Casemiro and Eriksen. Have Mount playing off a wide area, left or right, doesn't matter.

    Back 5 picks itself.

This won't happen though. He'll have to complicate it.

    And Mount is not available

Surely if we win and it’s a good performance you would ‘cheer’?

Odds have crashed in favour of Porto. Very rarely see such drastic change in odds pre game in any of the top 5 leagues or European football. From 3.0 (2/1) on Tuesday to 2.38 (11/8) now. Must be a load of money going on Porto over night

Ugarte, Casemiro and Eriksen in midfield and we have a chance. Flood it with experienced, positionally aware players. I love Mainoo but he can’t play in the 6 or 8 yet IMO. He needs to be the furthest forward where his main assets (technical skill, beating a man on the turn and quick interplay) can be utilised. Id drop Bruno. Amad right, Garnacho left, Hojlund up top. Back four picks itself

Some of us are Manchester United fans, I will definitely be happy with a win.

I hope we can retain our chances to go far in EL this season. I want our players to do well, regardless of who the manager is/will be, our young core of players is here to stay.

Seems odd. Has there been some important team news? I don't know how they weren't favourites in the first place mind.

I mean I want us to win, I'm not going to hope for a loss to get rid of Ten Hag, but my feelings would be quite "muted" if we do. I'd he happy for Ten Hag and the players but I won't see it as anything but a one-off and won't bring much optimism. A 'cheering' of 5/10 you could say. It won't be anything to build on and unlikely to be replicated in the next game. Hard to be happy to see a random win every now and then mixed with drubbings from any decent team.

And I really cannot se a good performance from the team at this point away in Europe.

Beautiful post . I had some clown calling me a top red earlier. Put it on ignore

    We are.

That was the first thing that came to mind as well but I don’t know of any important injury news. Not really that there’d be any United players important enough to cause such a change in odds

I 100% agree with that. Like I said I am not hoping for a loss or anything like that.

And if we're going to be a team that ends up 8th in the league and makes a decent cup run every now and than that's fine. We're not entitled to success or winning every game. What is not fine is the manager being unable to set us up to utilize the best of the squad or not get completely outplayed by any team that decides to take the game to us.

I may have been overly negative in that statement but I am echoing the sentiments that many share here, a win is likely to extend Ten Hags lifeline here and only further drag us down. Hence the not so positive statement towards a win.

EtH has nothing to do with the fact Antony is still here. The manager would have happily gotten rid of him this summer if he was able to.

Shite player on ridiculous wages = undesirable

Would he have? I'm not so sure. Especially considering some of his signings since.

Im a sucker for always living in hope as a fan I guess, I also think so much of football these days is about momentum and confidence and teams can go on runs without much to really explain why. I think we’ll win today and then we will see against Villa, who are now getting loads of plaudits. That might suit us.

I for one hope we can find a way to get a win tonight. We really need to stay in the cups, especially the Europa league as it is a route into the champions league. Come on you mighty reds.

Yep same, I am in fact one of those that were OK with Ten Hag staying on after the cup win at the end of last season. I thought he could possibly build on that and the team spirit seemed great in that game. This season has utterly failed to follow up on that though unfortunately, so enough is enough.

I also think so much of football these days is about momentum and confidence and teams can go on runs without much to really explain why.

Indeed, but the momentum also works on the opposite. I think we are now at the point where our players are half defeated coming into a game.

That's enough negativity from me though! The team is certainly capable of beating Porto, so we'll see.

These two words get said a lot just before we put in a shit performance. I think the Tottenham matchday thread had a solid page where every post featured them.
But we are facing a Porto team who needed to make "out of the box" deals to have a minimally competitive top 3 squad for this season(for the portuguese league level).
They are nowhere near enough of the level they usually have.
