Our biggest mistake will be if we dont play Rooney up front I feel. He has done a far better job than the other strikers. Using Rooney to 'fix' the midfield problem (and I use that term loosely because I dont think he is disciplined enough for any sort of holding role) will just create an equally big problem up front.

I would perhaps just stick Rafael in as DM and keep the system unchanged - he has the energy to close down Oscar and the likes.

Our DM role isn't just about being able to close down players though. Our current system also needs the DM to be disiplined positionally, always be available for the ball, starting attacks from the back and having the vision, passing range and ability to spread the ball around the pitch and dictate play. Only Herrera and Rooney out of the players we have available really come close to that, but moving either one negatively effects us in other parts of the pitch.

    Could this work

Fellaini wouldn't be up against quick players in their midfield really and Di Maria would prefer to be in the middle than on the wing.

Other than that, if he want to play Rooney as a DM i'd much prefer Falcao to come in as the striker and keep the team as above with Di Maria back on the bench for Fellaini.

Only way I want Fellaini in the side is if he's causing problems in the opposition's box. As a DM? No thanks. Not good enough for that position, not fair to ask him to play it either tbh.

I hope it's Herrera in deep role, he is the only one left who can play there. Would be disappointed with Rooney in midfield, I think Rafa will be on the left as Shaw might not be 100% fit. Shame Pearson is loaned out this could be his chance..

Let it not be forgotten that we won at the Emirates with a back 3 of Smalling, Blackett and McNair.

Has anyone except Carrick or Blind played the holding role this season?

    Feck.
    De gea
    Valencia Smalling McNair? Shaw
    Rooney
    Herrera Fellaini
    Mata Falcao Young

If rvp is fit he goes in. Of course though that all 4 players who got injured are starters in the defensive positions, and the one that isn't is competing with the other. All at once... Hoping for a draw but it'll be tough with all the injuries, would've been tough anyways really. Hopefully they're back relatively soon, for the Everton game.

    1. Having Carrick as a shield before them then
    2. It took a while for the defense to settle. Jose Mourinho won't ever slip that chance for United to calm down

I like where Rooney is but would use ADM somewhere, although where im not sure..

    De Gea
    Valencia--McNair--Smalling--Shaw
    Rooney
    Herrera--Fellaini
    Mata--Falcao--Young

subs: Valdes, Rafael, Blackett, Rothwell, Januzaj, Di Maria, van Persie

Good Lord! We're going to need a bit of luck.

Maybe edit the formation a little bit and put Fellaini a little further back and put him alongside Fellaini.

Wait... You think Rooney isn't disciplined enough to play the holding role but Rafael is?!

I think that we lose as much by not having Rooney up front, as we gain in playing him in midfield. Rafael may not be particularly disciplined but all we lose is another butt warming the bench.

    Those injuries have hurt ffs...

    -----------------De Gea-----------
    -Valencia-Smalling-McNair- Shaw-
    ----------Herrera----Fellaini/Rooney------
    -Di Maria-------Mata---------Young
    ----------------Rooney/Fellaini-------------

    or

    -------------De Gea-------------
    Valencia-Smalling--McNair--Shaw--
    -----------Herrera-----Rooney------
    Mata----------Fellaini----------Young
    ---------------Falcao----------------

We will win, no worries. If Chelsea can go with reserve squad to Liverpool last season, when Pool were in great goal scoring form and win 2-0, we can aim for win too here.

Doesn't he play there for Belgium

In the world cup, he seemed more of an 8, and Witsel was the 6. They did swap and change a bit, but Fellaini appeared to attack a bit more than Witsel did.

I think he's a far better 8 than a 6, but I've not seen him play there for United since Moyes, I don't think. He's not played there this season has he?

Losing Carrick is a huge loss, and insult to injury losing blind rojo and jones just compound the news. With us most likely going to use Rooney in midfield, to play very slow forwards is going to upset our fluency in our play

any news on Wilson? else Di Maria is a certain starter near the front

Awful injuries but we need to pursue with the same system and game plan. Mata, Herrera, Fellaini and Young have been hugely important during this run and they should remain as they are.

Shaw can slot it at left back and McNair can slot it for Jones. Not ideal, but so be it.

The big call is moving Rooney back into midfield. I don't like him there but for tomorrow I don't think we're left with much choice. He's mobile which helps, and it means we can maintain the 433 with either Falcao or Van Persie up top. The former should be first in line to start albeit I think Van Persie would probably put in the better performance, in spite of his lack of match fitness.

Awful luck. I was quite confident of winning, too. I'd take a draw right now.

I predicted us to win 3-1 a few days ago. Not sure I can change it but, I'd take a draw now.

One positive is that there isn't much pressure on us now with the injuries......we have won the games that we needed to.

Smalling has to be on the right if Valencia is RB. Paddy's going to get roasted out there with the amount of space Valencia leaves out there and even a defender of Smalling's talent can only just cover up for it.

    Expecting (hoping for):

    De Gea

    Valencia - McNair - Smalling - Young

    Rooney (Fellaini)

Mata - Herrera - Fellaini (Rooney) - di Maria

    van Persie

    De Gea
    Rafael - Smalling - Blackett/McNair/Thrope - Shaw
    Valencia - Herrera
    Mata - Fellaini - Young
    Rooney

What a sickner that is to hear the injury news. I went from believing we would win to not expecting anything at all now. Don't know what he will do with the Central Midfield position, Fellaini is wasted at DM and looks like a headless chicken whenever he has played at that position.

If we were to only take a point from the next 2 games we are not guaranteed anything....

Thought if would be a good time to test ourselves against Chelsea to see how far we have come, but after being hit with Armageddon, not sure what is going to happen now. Worst time to be hit with all those injuries. Need to play Valencia in midfield instead of Rooney as is being reported.
