Rooney holding against Chelsea would be madness. If anyone is a red card waiting to happen, it's him.

Not fancying our chances as much with those new injuries. Would be a surprise if we get all 3 points there, maybe even a draw.

where the heck has this stack of injuries crept in from?

How is Rojo suddenly injured when he only replaced Jones for 15mins for goodness sake.

Hope we can shuffle a draw out.

Stop putting Rooney in DM, moving him up top was our main reason for form.. We need an extra man in midfield and wingers for width, so the team picks itself virtually..

Januzaj and Mata wide (Jan/ Young)
Rooney up top with Herrera Fellaini and Di Maria in midfield.. I dont see we have a better option..

    DDG
    Valencia Smalling McNair Shaw
    Herrera Fellaini Di Maria
    Januzaj Rooney Mata

Agree with this other than your debate between Young and Januzaj. Why we would drop our most in form player all of a sudden when we have just lost a load of other players to injury? I hope we see the line up you said with Young over Januzaj. I would also have Herrera and Mata on the same side of the pitch which ever side that is to be.

    Could we not just do:

    ------------------------DDG-------------------------
    Rafael-------Smalling--------Blackett--------Shaw
    ------------------------Herrera---------------------
    ----------------Mata-----------Fellaini--------------
    Valencia---------------Rooney--------------Young

Valencia, and Young offering plenty of help to Herrera.

If it's not working get Rafael off put Valencia back to RB, Rooney into DM, and Falcao up front.

Write off, this one. Good thing we've exceeded every expectation we've set for ourselves recently, we can afford a setback.

Our best shot is if Chelsea go defensive. But I doubt that will a happen once they see the team sheet and all the missing players.

I would love to see this lineup, but I highly doubt that LVG will go for Fellaini as the striker. But I think it would really work!

Herrera as the DM for me. He has the passing range and energy. His discipline is improved too. Not saying he's perfect but keep Rooney up top. Di Maria in Herrera's place in CM. Fellaini needs to be up the pitch where he is most effective.

There's no rationale for suggesting Rooney will play as a holding mid, except as a mind game headfake.

We have to make a few adjustments, but we shouldn't abandon what has been working for us of late. Fellaini and Herrera can hold the fort in front of the back four and Di Maria can play in a free role behind Rooney and between Mata and Young. If we lose, we lose, but we have to give ourselves to play well and secure glorious triumph.

I think we will get something from this and wouldn't be shocked if we won. Big LVG has given me too much confidence these days!

I think we should keep the same system and use RVP upfront and put Rooney in the holding role. It's quite staggering to think how many positions that guy can give a decent performance in. I think it's a much better solution to putting Herrera or Fellaini in the DM role considering the damage/effectiveness they provide in their natural roles.

I wonder if Shaw could be put into central defence and Young used as a left back(Di Maria on the wing)? Shaw is formidable defensively but it would be a massive risk I guess.

Either way tomorrow's result isn't that decisive on our season this year so even if we lose I won't mind. It's a shame because with our first team I expected us to win :( Mourinho's never ending luck I guess...fecking cnut

If its about the 'philosphy' then we should not see too much difference with incoming players replacing the injured.

I think the players coming in will adjust.....

Chelsea will be a very good test.

I expect us to get at least a point.

Was very excited waiting for this game. But its really depreasing now after those fecking injuries. Ill be glad if we manage to get a point now.

Damn injuries! All the central defensive and holding midfield options out barring Smalling: congratulations United! You have outdone yourself again.

Can't see us winning this now. A draw would be a tall order too. I'll play Rooney as a deep lying playmaker with Fellaini and Herrera on either side in the box to box roles.

    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling McNair Shaw
    Rooney
    Herrera Fellaini
    Mata Falcao Young

Or may be go with 3 at the back

    De Gea
    McNair/Rafael Smalling Shaw
    Valencia Herrera Fellaini Young
    Mata Rooney Di Maria
Will have to be vary of the spaces that leaves on the flanks. Probably be ultra defensive, play 523 and try to hit them on the counter.

On the flip side these defensive injuries have come at a good time. All our players are in good form so we can objectively look at our squad and not think "If we were in goodform, he might work". We know who works and who doesn't.

This little injury section shows how we still need to add depth to the squad. Its a small little nudge to the club to say "We are doing well, but that doesnt mean you can't buy players, we need them".

In a way, this match wont decided who gets 4th but its a nice reminder to the club that we still need to spend. Ofcourse I would rather we had everyone fit and smash Chelsea, but just giving a different view.

How many red cards has Rooney had in his utd career, especially the last 5 years?

    3 in total for Utd?
Those red cards were almost always due to petulance after Rooney becomes frustrated by a player getting the better of him. Play him as a DM against Hazard and he'll almost certainly leave his foot in a couple of times.

There's no way Rooney has the discipline, either positional or temperamental, to play that role against a top team.

Interesting perspective, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it comes at a "good time". It comes at the wrong time, I think. A win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge would give an incalculable boost the the team as a whole (Not that it needed any, but even more so).

However, it will be interesting to see if the squad as a whole has understood the philosophy or of it is only the starting eleven. Luke Shaw has not played a game in two months and I wonder if it is too much of an ask to make him step up against Chelsea. McNair was one of the first guys to actually comprehend the system, as Van Gaal played him ahead of Jones and Evans at times. He lacks composure, as he is still a kid. It will be interesting to see how he fares. To see if he's learned anything during his time out of the first team.

A huge test for the defence and a huge test for the squad's belief in philosophy. Im excited in a weird way.

He's definitely got the temperament and positional discipline these days. It's more about whether he has intelligence to spot things early.

I'm actually really exited about the opportunity our new injury crisis creates. Even if we go down to defeat, red mancunians will be rewarded with a performance we're all going to proud of.

I will not be happy with a draw; either we light up Stamford bridge of we get rekd like that star destroyer in the new Star Wars trailer. but I don't feel nervous for the boys; Philoshofie FTW!
