Think Jose is going to let them have as much of the ball as possible in this one. Full-backs won't be going very far forward, and long-ball to Fellaini will be the way, with Herrera and Pogba sitting quite deep behind him.

He'll not want to get caught by their high press and he'll be more then happy to get out of Spain with a draw.

Celta have lost the last 3 games so they're not in great form at the moment. However, they did beat Barcelona 4-1 at home earlier in the season, so it's not an easy place to go.

I'll take a draw and a win at our place, please.
They've been resting players in the league in preparation for Europa.

    Edit: beaten to it...

Oh come off it. We're Manchester United. We are not going to sit back against Celta Vigo. I'm by no means implying that we should underestimate their abilities but if i see us parking the bus against this second rate team i'll be fuming. We need to attack!

We are Manchester United... a Manchester United with no centre backs and Jose Mourinho as our manager away in a 2 legged semi-final against a team that play a very high pressing style.

Sitting back and playing on the counter/through Fellaini therefore is not only an option, it's a highly probably option for Jose to employ.

Anderlecht were being opened up at will by us in the 2nd leg. Lingard, Pogba and Ibra missed from 2 yards out, Rashford fluffed a 1 on 1 with the keeper. We dominated that game.

The only reason we struggled in the first half is because Rojo got injured which destabilized our back line. The goal we conceded was because our back line seemed to forget how to be in line with each other (blind and shaw in particular).

The only way we lose to Celta Vigo after 2 legs is if we have a typical home performance and they nick a goal.

I would be shocked if we won this game. I think scraping a draw isn't unrealistic, but all the cards are in Celtas favour for this home game.
    • Players rested
    • Home tie
    • Underdog
    • Game raising club
    • United injuries and lack of rest for key players
    • Uniteds backline in disarray due to injuries
They really should be getting a win with these conditions, so getting a draw would be imo a very good result all things considered. What we simply cannot afford to do is pick up any suspensions for the Home Tie given that we're down to our bare bones, every player counts at the moment.
We've got one of the best managers in the world, incredible training facilities and a bunch of players they can only dream of playing. How much did it cost to put their squad together, was it a Pogba?

We can't feel too sorry for ourselves. Should be getting a draw minimum.

Saw this video on Rude Tube and have pretty much ever since always said "I'm a sssnake" whenever a snake is brought up in conversation, even though I found the video a bit shit.

    Carry on.

They've been playing their second-string in the league (and have lost a few games) in order to save themselves for this one. Eduardo Berizzo is a Bielsa acolyte (played under him and served as his assistant), so expect lots of aggressive pressing and a high defensive line. A fit a rested side containing Ibra, Pogba, Mata, Mkhi, Bailly, Herrera etc would put this lot to the sword, but it will be a tough test for our physically-exhausted ramshackle squad.
The high defensive line probably suits us at the moment to be honest. Rashford with Pogba and Mhki on the pitch is a different animal with their accuracy on through balls.

Can add Herrera to that list as well actually so if it's true they play a high line I expect us to pick them off and score a couple whilst being on the back foot for most of the game.

    I'll go for 2-1 United.

But that player can control the midfield, giving platform for our attackers to attack. Pogba was a big miss in all the games.
Exactly - the midfield we will likely use relies on him as the link to the attack and it was obviously not there while he was out. It also lets the likes of Carrick/Fellaini and Herrera do what they do best, rather than trying to play that more creative attacking role. With Pogba back in, I would expect the rest of the team to function much better in their respective roles.

They rested players for 3 games?
2 of the 3 games. Fielded the reserves vs Betis, to allow the players to recover from the Genk game. Put out a strong side away at Sevilla (lost 2-1 in a hard-fought game after playing most of the second half with 10 men). Then fielded a weakened side again vs Athletic in preparation for this Thursday. They're a high-energy pressing side, so need their players to be physically fresh if the team is to really perform.

I don't disagree. Pace in behind will be our biggest weapon here. I expect we'll also look to bypass their midfield press by going direct to Fellaini and utilising his hold-up skills (reminiscent of our tactics in the games vs Liverpool).

Yeah most definitely, mourinho will have something worked out to get past the press as it's something we normally don't do to had against when it's expected.

Agree with that but you're discussing all the advantages they have over us.

I think it's a fair point to highlight we have better players and a better manager.

Both teams scored a goal, both teams created chances in the first half. We were comfortable until Rojo went off, then it took us 15 mins to get our bearings and then we had control again. The only reason they got a sniff in the first half was the injury.

The opposition team creating chances is a given; every team creates chances at this level. By no metric were we dominated in the 1st half. By most metrics it was an even 1st half.

If you think Anderlecht dominated us in the 1st half then you just aren'td good at analyzing the game. The resources are there for you; you can get stats and highlights of the game very easily and review them. Human memory is very unreliable on its own.

People cannot look at Celta in the league and conclude that they are a poor team. In the last few years, teams like Wigan, Villa, Hull and Crystal Palace were all struggling in the league when they got to the F.A. Cup final. League form is irrelevant. Celta will be up for the cup and we better make sure we are too.

Their defence is pretty poor so if we can have a good attacking day we may come out of it well. On the other hand, their attack is pretty good.

I would go with 5 at the back for this, really need for us to keep a clean sheet here, score an away goal and we are golden.

chest beating isn't going to cut it. Anderlecht took us all the way.
All the way… at home, we completely dominated them away almost till the end. If I remember, we had 70% possession in the beginning of the second half. The result and our performance at the first half at home made people forget that.

Contrary to most here, I'm expecting a relatively easy game, maybe with us killing the tie. The only thing is Mourinho will play conservatively all through the game, having Arsenal already in his head.

High defensive line with a center-back pairing of Carrick and Blind? :nervous:

If our mentality is strong for this we will get a good result we need to be calm and professional and players must hold their nerve and realize it might be the only chance for them to play C.L football.

I was replying to a post about them playing a high defensive line due to their coach working under Bielsa previously and adopting similar tactics.
Oh, ok, sorry, I misunderstood. Their high defensive line suits us, I totally agree.

Bloody nonsense. Yes we're short on centre backs but sitting back and inviting pressure on our unsettled back four isn't going to end well.

Growing tired of these tactics...show some bloody ambition!!

Chelsea at home and City away couldn't score and you're afraid of this lot?

Martial, Rashford and Lingard are all inconsistent so its hard to predict how we will do. Hope they are up for it, hope too we get the cushion of an away goal.

Rashford is in good form so if they play a high line press I expect Pogba / Carrick / Herrera or even Tony V to find him with some through balls.

I think their defence is very poor but they're good going forward. If we had a couple of our defenders back for this I think we would shut them out and score, but now with the predicted line up we have, I'm going to say 1-1
