I remember the days in the 90s and 00s where we would routinley go to Villa Park and expect a win and almost assume the win beforehand.

    Look how times have changed.

They've been dealt some huge injury blows and it almost feels like the stars are aligning once again for ETH. Ramsey, Onana and McGinn all injured.
There might be a chance that Onana is available. I'd say Ramsey will probably miss out. Seemed to be his groin.

Very true, however can't remember ever being in such diabolical form going to a game at Villa

You went into the Boxing day game last season not even having scored for three prem games (3-0 to Bournemouth, 0-0 at Liverpool and 2-0 at West Ham) and we were as comfortable as anything going 2-0 up.

You started slinging some long diagonals out wide and we couldn't cope one bit.

The key for us winning here is getting Morgan Rogers turning and running as much at the back 4 as possible as he's the nightmare player for your midfield currently. We don't have endless players to run at you like Spurs do though.

Wouldn't shock me if this is a relatively low key 1-1 game, we're happy with the point and ETH clings on for the next few games.

Think we are going to play on the counter here and we need to sit deep and Maguire is brilliant in the air so I'd go with something like this:

    Onana
    Maz De Ligt Maguire Martinez
    Casemiro Ugarte Mainoo
    Amad Bruno Garnacho

Please just play 3 in the middle and stop playing Bruno as part of that 3 and give Dalot a rest, he's not a LB and it's going to ruin his confidence.

Barkley will come in. Had some nice passes in the week but was also caught on the ball a few times on edge of the box when pressed.

Stand off him and Tielemans though and Watkins/Duran will be getting plenty of quality balls to run onto.

I'd also start Maatsen in this.

Posts like this are so stupid. Under Van Gaal we'd go their and expect assume a win beforehand because they were Derby County levels of shit. Hardly glorious times for us. Within 12 months we could be going there expecting a routine win. These things go in circles.

I like Barkley. He played very well against United with Luton last season.

Onana would be a huge miss though. His physicality. Kamara coming back soon will be a huge boost to the squad depth.

It's such a depressing situation to be in where I genuinely don't know if I want us to win.

I wanted us to win or lose last night. The draw was the worst possible result as it both gives us barely anything, and keeps a complete fraud in the manager's job.

The Villa game is worse though. I hate seeing us being humiliated, but I think a hiding here is the only way that the owners will even consider making a change. I don't think they'll actually sack him, but it'll maybe start the process at least.

I think casemiro and Ugarte together is the key for any stabilisation. Don't mind pairing them both with Mainoo and cutting out Bruno for a while.

We used to be able to say that about basically every ground bar Anfield and Stamford Bridge.

Back in those days i never expected us to lose a game. During the Fergie era i genuinely felt we were invincible. We had that quality where we had the players and the spirit to beat anyone. Most of the time that's exactly what happened. We'll never experience that again. Partly because it was the folly of youth and partly because we'll never have a manager like him again.

Give Bruno an extended rest and try some different midfield combinations.

    I would like to see

    ————————Onana
    Mazrouai—De Ligt—Martinez—Dalot
    ————Mainoo-Eriksen-Casemiro
    ————————-Mount
    ——————Hojlund———Rashford

    ............... . Onana.....

    Maz.. Maguire.. De Ligt...Dalot

    ................... Ugarte...........
    ......... Casemiro.... Mainoo...
    .................... Bruno..........

    ......... Hojlund........... Rashford...

We need to go back to basics. Call it oleball all you like, but there was never anything wrong with setting up according to the players you have, their confidence levels and the opponent.

Try hit with rashford and hojlund with Bruno emerging as a false 9 in attack. We absolutely cannot be exposed the way we have been. 0-0 would be a good result

    Onana
    De Ligt Evans Martinez
    Mazraoui Ugarte Casemiro Dalot
    Eriksen
    Holjund Garnacho

I like the idea of 532/352 for a while. It's talented wide players who suffer but we're just so poor elsewhere

I think this will be very similar to the Spurs game. Villa play high tempo football with runners and pace. We can't handle that under ETH.

Luckily, I believe this will be his last game in charge.

    Guarantees for this game:

We concede in the opening minutes of either half, maybe even both

Camera pans to a glum Ratcliffe in the crowd multiple times

    Duran continues his hot streak

    Bruno is sent off

Ten Hag urges patience in his post match interview

    Ideal Line-up:
    Onana
    Maz, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot
    Mainoo, Ugarte, Eriksen
    Amad, Hojlund, Rash/Garnacho

Who is the referee? Haven’t had Michael Oliver yet. We haven’t won a game under him in the history of football

Their high-octane performance against Bayern might actually work in our favour. Sometimes you get a dip straight after a massive moment like that, hopefully that will happen.

But even if it does, I've still no confidence we can get a result. Villa are a good team, but you know things are going badly when you view a trip there as if you're facing prime Barcelona. At least it's on a Sunday, so only a small part of the weekend can be ruined

I don't believe how many lives this guy gets

We aren't going to go 5 in a row without a win actually, plus we have always seemed to get the better of them regardless of form.

Not sure which CB pairing I’d go for. Both de Ligt and Martinez are struggling. Think Maguire plays but not sure with whom.

    Onana

Mazraoui - Maguire - De Ligt - Dalot

    Casemiro - Ugarte - Eriksen

    B.Fernandes

    Hojlund - Rashford
subs: Bayindir, Evans, Martinez, Collyer, Mainoo, Amad, Antony, Zirkzee, Garnacho

score prediction - Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester United

We're beating them feckers comfortably and going on an epic winstreak.

Thankfully I’ll be running a half marathon when this is on, so I won’t be tempted to watch what is sure to be a thrashing.

And you could say what you wanted in those days without being cancelled

Ten Hag's luck will save him again. Villa will finish the game with something like 60% possession, 2.5xG and 1 goal. It is written.

    United 2:1. De Ligt 90+1.

    Villa at home this season.

    2-0 defeat to Arsenal.
    3-2 win v Everton
    3-1 win v Wolves
    1-0 win v Bayern Munich

    Man United away this season

    2-1 defeat to Brighton
    3-0 win v Southampton
    0-0 draw v Palace
    3-3 draw v Porto

This is going to be bad I feel, lack of any sort of athleticism in midfield and players that seem to not believe in tracking back or giving the man on the ball options.

It’s just going to be an absolute massacre.

Says a lot about the Glazers' incompetence that Villa assembled a team probably as good, or close to the level as our best sides post-Ferguson (they seem to be a ~75 point level team right now, which is around the level of our 17/18, 20/21, and 22/23 teams IMO), in less than 24 months, with the fraction of the billions we spent, and the fraction of the attractiveness and prestige as well. And they started from relegation level too.

Ineos don't really have to be geniuses in order to get us competing every year again.
