This. People really need to get a grip and more importantly, get behind this lad and give him a chance before forming opinions.

Its incredible how certain people have already started slating him, before even he kicked a ball. Give him a chance ffs

Can't belive how anyone can be unhappy about this signing. If you follow Premier League you should know that he's a class player. Well done Fergie for getting him.

I still lol when I think about back when he played his first PL season for Watford, a guy who's a Watford fan tried to convince me he was better than Ronaldo!

He wasn't and he will never be, but I still think he'll be a fine addition to a squad. Now let's just finish up De Gea and a midfielder, and start getting ready for 11/12!

The only part that concerns me is the price. I hope its nowhere near the figure thats been mentioned before

According to some - this is a bad thing...apparently!

1) He is an english international
2) He is only 26 years old (when the season kicks off at least)
3) He is good at set-pieces
4) He consistently scored 6-7-8 goals pr season and has 10 or so assists
5) He has hardly missed a match the last 4 seasons
6) He has terrific pace and good skills
7) His price is not worse than £15-18 million (which in todays market aint bad)
8) He can play down the middle or on the left wing
9) He is established in the P.L and won't need adjustment
10) He offers a great alternative to Valencia and Nani

1) Only matters for CL really.
2) That's not exactly young, I know players peak at different ages but that's the same age as Cristiano Ronaldo
3) Yeah
4) He took all of Villas penalties, I'd like to see how many he got from open play
5) Yes
6) Yes
7) It's slightly hefty for a guy with 1 year left on his contract, but's alright.
8) Yes
9) He is stepping up to a big club, don't be too sure.
10) He is a blend of both I think, but not as good as either.

We're getting a premiership proven player who will provide good options and be a valuable member of the squad, so there's a lot to be happy with.

But at the same time he doesn't really improve (IMO) our best 11 and I can understand why some people aren't 'blown away'. But similar musings were said about Hernandez and notably Valencia so let's just wait and see how he performs, rather than judge now.

As long as we get a central midfielder too, there's been some great and clever investment at the club this summer - very happy.

How about 4 years (3 for Sanchez)?

A. Young
07/08 - 8 goals/17 assists
08/09 - 8 goals/10 assists
09/10 - 9 goals/13 assists
10/11 - 9 goals/13 assists

Nani
07/08 - 4 goals/11 assists
08/09 - 6 goals/2 assists
09/10 - 7 goals/9 assists
10/11 - 10 goals/14 assists

Sanchez
08/09 - 3 goals/2 assists
09/10 - 5 goals/3 assists
10/11 - 12 goals/6 assists

Stats from Soccernet. Dunno how accurate they are.

Thanks, and to all those who supplied stats.

We have to consider the inevitable that Young will now be playing with better quality, thus having the opportunity to creating more and getting more chances himself. His output will be greater and he will improve being around better players.

Maybe things look brighter than they first appear. The big name signing is not always essential.

However now a top midfielder is!!

09/10 - 9 goals/13 assists
10/11 - 9 goals/13 assists

Those stats are very impressive, you really can't fault his consistency. I know a few Villa fans and they all say he's had a poor season by his standards. If 9 goals and 13 assists for a struggling side is a poor season, I can't wait to see him have a good one.

Young gets the majority of his assists and perhaps goals (not sure how many pens he scored, but a fair few at least) from dead ball situations. You might argue that thats what we needed

Personally I think he offers more coming forwards than Valencia, but definitely less defensively. In different matches one player might be more useful than the other and not always the same one.

I think its good that theres a good player to have on the left and allow Nani to play on the right when he's on form. So I'm not against this at all - so long as the price reflects his contract situation and actual ability

Another picture of him leaving carrington this afternoon.

Its all over the newspapers now. 100% of this transfer now.

Variety is the spice of life

He will improve the team and is very welcome.

Van Der Sar had his doubters in here.

The proof will be in his performance. I expect him to play regularly.

It all depends on whether there's enough cash left to get a centre midfielder. If there is, great, we've got a good new option on the wing and have strengthened our squad. If there isn't, what the feck are we thinking?

An insult indeed, with your record of melodramatic pessimism in the face of constant triumph.

Only on a matchday. On other days of the week I'm actually quite a reasonable sort.

1) Having an english base is not a bad thing - and there are confirmed rumours that UEFA is trying to get EU to accept that all teams need more players from their own country

2) Nor is it old - he still has 6-7 years ahead of him

4) Villa scored 19 penalties in the last 4 seasons - and Barry was the regular taker the first couple of those seasons as I recall - so if Young took all - max 11 penalties.

7) As an alternative we could gamble on getting him on a free - and most likely see him leave for another club in 3 weeks time.

9) How many players signed from P.L-clubs has not been a success under Ferguson ? I can only think of a few

10) Don't underestimate that value of a player who is good at set-pieces (look at the effect Charlie Adams set-pieces had for Blackpool)

Looks like a done deal then. I wonder what squad number he'll get. My bet is 18. 2, 4 and 6 are available but not good numbers for a winger.

I was a little surprised when it was first claimed we were after him, but really, the more you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Very happy with this signing. Adds pace, trickery, ability to beat players, assists, free kick ability. It will make us a more dangerous team. Good deal.

Young isn't David Beckham when it comes to set pieces, if we signed Sneijder for instance he wouldn't get a look in from freekicks or corners. The only Brummie I know has spent 80% of last season moaning about how shite his set pieces have gotten, as far as plus points go it's almost microscopic.

The number of solutions to United's problems Young brings in, it's hard to fathom how many in here still view him as a squad player. If he's competing for a winger's spot, Young will be first choice, ahead of Nani and Valencia.

Good player no doubt.

I was against this signing because I felt that he doesn't add anything extra to the team. For me Nani and Valencia are enough.

However his abilities as a player are unquestionable. So now that he is here I'll be hoping for his success.

I am also intrigued by how Fergie plans to use him. Could we see a change in system or style of play.

 He'll be first choice ahead of Valencia because he plays on the left, not because he's a better player. Even then it's 50/50 he'll dislodge Nani from the left winger spot.

Our set pieces are amongst the worst in the league, even Pennant would improve them.

Anyway, i am happy with the Young signing.

I'm very happy to welcome Ashley Young, well, I will once I'm finished heckling him outside BUPA. But seriously, he's talented and key word for Sir Alex - he's DETERMINED.

Thats very, very important.

We only really have Vidic as a dangerman at corners with Rio almost always staying back, I doubt anyone would be able to improve us significantly there.

Great news.

I remember when Valencia was signed I was like 'what the feck, who is this Wigan guy?' then he went on to be one of the best wingers in the league.

Then we signed some unknown Mexican kid and he lights up the world cup and helps us win the record 19th English title.

Fergie and the scouting staff know what they are doing.

Frankly I can't wait for a proper corner to be taken in our games.

Also, our wing options are now far and away the best and deepest in the country. An injury to Valencia, Nani, or Park won't be so bad now.

It will be interesting to see what Fergie does in terms of Central Midfield now. Will Cleverly and Young get action there now? Will Fergie put trust in Anderson to take the reigns? Or is there still another midfielder to join us later in the summer?

Interesting times indeed.
