EL D Europa League Last 16

Real Sociedad 1:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 06 March 2025

It was like two lower half premier teams playing. The standard was that bad.

Had we been wearing Liverpool red tonight this game finishes 0-1 because that sorry excuse for a “penalty” wouldn’t have been given a second thought and the game would’ve carried on as normal.

Hard to know whether to be disappointed or relieved at that. Actually thought most of the team played pretty well, with no lack of effort.

It's just such stupid moments that cost us big time. The Dalot cut back instead of putting it on a plate for Hojlund is the ultimate example.

Still unbeaten in Europe this season!

Would have taken a draw before the game with such a patched up squad running on empty after playing with 10 men for 55 minutes last Wednesday and extra time on Sunday but it's frustrating and annoying how Sociedad scored from debatable penalty. Credit to Onana with two decent saves to keep it 1-1 for next week back to nervy Old Trafford in a tie that remains 50/50.

I only caught the first half, but Rasmus must've really upped the awful ante to have had a worse game than Dalot.
Very much! It was so bad and he looks completely lost. We just didn’t get up the pitch because he kept losing it.

Not too bad tbh given its a European away game. You'd fancy us to progress given that performance away to them but this United team could easily get dicked at OT by them.

Good result, should have probably won the match. I am just shocked by how poor technically Dorgu is, did we spend 25M on a dud? How can you come up with a player whose only attribute is running ability, his passing, control, touch, crossing are all shit. Did he also just lose the ability to take on players, i thought this was his best attribute. When we are strapped for cash, we can not afford to spend money on players who are technically so deficient.

It’s completely weird how many of these dodgy decisions we get against us.
When he stopped playing for the free kick when Hoijlund got pulled back and we were literally through on goal on the right, think Garnacho had it, how he failed to play advantage is a disgrace

The combination of Onana playing terrible long balls and Hojlund losing them in the few times Onana hit his target, constantly leading to counter attacks got me mad.

We were better for more than 60 minutes, had 1-0 lead and probably should've scored another one up to that point. Sociedad make 3 changes, Bruno handball gives them the penalty and game changes. Pretty sure that penalty was their first shot on target so makes it even worse.

I'm not confident about our chances of going through. We all know our form at Old Trafford and think we needed (at least) a minimal win in Spain to make it more comfortable for return leg. This way I'm dreading it already even though it's a week away.

Also really dislike these jammy Spanish teams. Sociedad created next to nothing before that penalty ffs.

Yes, I said this before we signed him, its weird what you can see just by studying stats. As expected its going to take a hell of a lot of unexpected development not to turn out wasted money.

zero point playing Hojlund, he's an empty shir.t absolutely never where he should be on the break.

Yeah depending on who's back it's hard to argue against zirkzee with Bruno and Garnacho behind

We should beat rso at home, utd gets in better positions but decisions in final third disappoints. Once zirkzee went off utd weren’t able to advance easily and rso with subs came more into the game.
Shit penalty to concede but we should beat rso at home

I doubt you’ll see a poorer quality game than that in the Championship this weekend.

He's played what 3 games? Dont think he was that bad tbf

Dorgu was far, far worse. Second game in a row where he has resembled a kid who was playing for the first time of his life. But it's early, so we need to show patience.
Was shocking. Couldn't do anything right. Looks like we got him for his physicality & ignored all the other aspects.

Needs to improve a lot.

Did you also notice the expression of Garnacho when he got subbed? He acted as if he had just scored an hattrick and couldn't believe the disrespect. That boy is delulu

And people wonder why we don't rush the youth players into the action...
Youth is different, they have no cost. Obviously we have to give Dorgu time, but we also have to question that if he ends up being the quality that isn't good enough like Malacia, it sets us back again. Scouting needs to be questioned

What is happening with Hojlund?

Referee had more impact than him. He just strolls around watching

I don’t think he’s had a shot in about 12 games now

So I havent seen the game yet and even before this game I totally understand where you're coming from. However I can see that in this particular game he had 3 key passes in 90 mins which is the most in the team, then Dalot with 2. I can also see that like you say, another match with 0 shots. But while its not what you want from your starting striker perhaps he did at least find a teammate who was able to shoot a few times. It wasnt nothing

Dorgu has looked good until tonight and he was grand in the first half. He obviously had a poor second half but people are going way overboard.

Proper United game in Europe. Fairly comfortable in spite of loads of easy mistakes only to throw it away through some silly error.

It’ll be disappointment next week as they will knock us out

Agreed but also entirely unsurprised, have we really done anything to improve our approach to identifying and signing players

I was one of those who didn’t want him sold in January , he is slowly changing my mind .

I thought the Casemiro and Bruno midfield worked surprisingly well. With better attackers we're killing this game off with 2 or 3 goals.

What's up Real Sociedad though? 6th with 60 points last season, still in the upper half of the table, playing at home against an injury-ridden PL 14th place... And still they were on the back foot for most of the game! Was this a one-off or is La Liga kind of shit?

And people wonder why we don't rush the youth players into the action...

I keep saying the same.

What are people expecting of Dorgu. He's 20, only just getting going in his career. He shouldn't really be here yet.

But people want more teenagers in there.

that's the spirit!

We have a chance to progress if OT is up for it. Only worry is their best player might be back for them.

3 best United players today:

1) Yoro
2) De Ligt
3) No one

3 worst United players today:

1) Dalot
2) Dorgu
3) Garnacho

He contributed absolutely nothing other than that one decent run where Dalot refused to pass to him
He also put Gatnacho in if I recall correctly, he made quite a few good runs in the channels and the ball never came to him
