Real Sociedad 1:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

The biggest issue that exacerbating all issues is the lack of attacking prowess in our team. We are not able to capitalise during the periods when we are dominant, and then suffer in the rest of the game. Its easier for teams to be brave and take more risks when they know they have very little to worry about at the other end.
We really our scraping at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to talent in the front 3 without Amad. Hojlund may well turnout to be the worst striker to play as a regular starter in a United shirt, leaving behind even Weghorst.

I had to leave the game for about 20 minutes and missed the handball that led to the pk but I did catch it later in the evening. I'm sorry to break the news, but that was not a handball offense.

Some of you have no idea how momentum can be powerful in football. Just completely ignoring context and thinking the team that were utterly toothless for 70 minutes would be able to play like that in the return.
To be fair with Becker and Oskarsson on the pitch they looked a lot better than us, they had the momentum and we're lucky we walked away with a draw. If they can continue like that we are fecked.

We had the game under control till the penalty, harsh but I get why it was given.

Onana - Some decent saves and no frango. That's a positive.
CBs - All really good, Yoro really filling into the big boots. De Ligt with almost a mess up but good recovery.
Dalot - Decent game but again, this guy's IQ is -ve. Should've squared Hojlund.
Dorgu - His worst game for us, too sloppy with the ball. But these kinda games will happen, he's still very young.
CMs - Bruno was sloppy, both did good off the ball, nothing really special to note.
Zirkzee - Well taken goal, other than that was decent.
Garnacho - Good assist but very selfish otherwise. Better playing on the right.
Hojlund - Better than his last few performances but that's not saying much. Was in good positions today but was not picked by selfish teammates.

Exactly. You could put Kane in at 9 and without service he wouldn't score. He is young and I am sure there is a decent player in there. It might mean him going on loan. I bet if he went somewhere where they actually gave him a decent service, he'll score loads. His touch isn't great but that is something he can work on

For the last 20 minutes, momentum was with Real Sociedad. If they carry that same momentum to the return leg, we are toast.
Well let’s hope they don’t get gifted a dodgy penalty that gets the raucous crowd in their home stadium going.

Dalot seems to be the free man attacking wise. I don’t know whether this is intentional but everytime he gets the ball he makes the wrong decision. If this formation is going to free up space for the full backs then we need one with some attacking ability. Amorim did this with Amad when he joined the club but has reverted to 2 defensive full backs.

We could have been two or three up on another day had we taken the chances we had though ...

Yes because they could do subs with impact, we couldn't. That's why it's crucial that we get ideally 2 goals in the first 60 minutes next time, because the last 30 minutes they will dominate us due to having options off the bench.

Whilst it was ultimately another disappointing result, it was another game which gave me encouragement for the future under Amorim, if only because its quite clear what he wants us to do and where the holes are that need to be filled.

Take Casemiro for example. I said before the game that I think Casemiro will be useful in a way that he isn't it the PL, and it proved correct. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't great, but he did some nice things in winning the midfield battle and getting the ball up the pitch. In the PL he's a liability as he's unable to deal with the intensity and physicality, but against Spanish opposition he gets a little bit more time to show what he used to be able to do.

In that example you see what the team needs to do it in the PL - a strong and physical presence who can win the battle in midfield and get the ball to the attacking 5. What worries me is that its going to be a really tough position to fill in the summer, but I'm excited/hopeful to see what Vivell and the new scouting team come up with. Hopefully they're just following the Brighton team round the markets of South America, because a Caicedo or Baleba type would be perfect.

We'll need an attacking wing back in the summer as well. This is well known, but again Dalot showed last night why its necessary. If they're going to leave one of the wbs to be marked by a single man, then you very obviously need wbs on both sides who can beat a man in a 1-1. Last night reminded me of how teams just used to let Wan-Bissaka have the ball.

Garnacho showed again why he isn't the 10 we need. He's just too focused on producing for himself and not the 9. But more importantly his uncompromising need to drift out into the wide spaces weakens our attacking moves. Instead of starting inside, receiving the ball, finding the space in behind and then finding the 9 (the intention in Amorim ball), he always goes wide. This would be fine (and Amroim has tried to accommodate it), if he's either sliding the ball through to the wb making the underlapping run, putting good crosses into the box from wide, or beating the man on the byline and cutting it back - but hes doing none of those things. Instead he beats the first man 1 on 1 and then dribbles into a congested area and lets off a low xg shot. Fun player, nothing against the kid, but lets get some good cash for him in the summer. We'll need at least one hard working 10 with good game intelligence, a good receive and turn, and good short passing and to play alongside Amad.

And finally the depth. We were shattered in the last half hour yesterday. If you watch Bruno you can see he starts to pass with his back leg locked out when he tired, like a drunk flamingo. 45 minutes with 10 a week ago, then 120 on Sunday. These players - especially Bruno, Dalot, Zirkzee and Rasmus are spent. We need a young, fit, motivated bench next year - possibly 2 if somehow we do find ourselves in Europe. This project will need lots of runners. Get him some.

Much improved for that first hour or so, a more confident team with competent attackers would have had a comfortable lead at that point.

Lost control from then on but that was possibly down to fitness and the lack of options to rotate. Ideally we'd be looking to rest several starters at the weekend but it's not really possible unfortunately.

Always a 'downer' when we are robbed by a penalty decision, which reflects a 'poor rule' rather than the hawk-eye skills of VAR.

We were not great, but until they got awarded the penalty we looked most likely. Zirkzee was the stand out for me not just because he scored but for his all round performance, some nice touches and he put in a shift. De Ligt did well some last minute stops, clearances, Onana made some good saves and had his best overall match performance for a while.
Dalot continues to find space, make good runs, then makes terrible decisions at the end.
Mazraoui once again showed his utility value (wonder if Ruben has considered him for goalie yet ...).

One grumble about ref's, for the last few games (home and away) the number of '50/50' decisions, which I always assume should even themselves out over a game or two have been overwhelmingly given against us in the last 4 games.
Cannot prove it statistically, because of the argument of what constitutes '50/50', but I am sure we have not had a fair shake in this category of (debatable) refereeing decisions... anyone else agree?

We were the better team and should have won 1-0 or 2-0.

I guess Bruno just misjudged the ball and his arm met the ball instead of his head. Unfortunate, but a PK.

Why didn't Dalot make an early cross on the ground to Hojlund in the 1st half? It was such an obvious play....

I thought that match was the best we can play with that group of players and if we match that, we go through next week. That's where we are.

If you have a chance watch the Hojlund offside at 79' mark and you'll see why he will never be even a good striker in the PL. He is offside by a step and he is leaning toward the goal ready to sprint when the pass is made. At this moment he has a distinct advantage on the defender to get to the ball first after the pass is made. However, the defender easily recovers, gets to the ball, and cuts in front of Hojlund. It's a perfect example of how Hojlund's first 1 to 5 steps are so slow. And it wasn't even close. I will always be amazed that our club bought him for 64 mil when any decent scout should have recognized this weakness. It's why he has trouble holding up the ball, getting off shots, creating space for a pass and a shot, and is second best to so many 50/50 balls.

I'm glad Collyer is back and hope he has a good finish to the season.
