EL D Europa League Last 16

Real Sociedad 1:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 06 March 2025

You need to consider how atrocious and fearful we are at home though. Tonight was a great chance for us to put the tie almost to bed, we're playing much better away from home
That has to change at some point. Plus I think we’re less nervous at home in Europe for some reason.

There is a lot of analysis about our team and lots of tacticos who think they have all the answers, but I think the root of everything is that our players aren't good enough (too young/just shit) or too thick (too young/simple/Dalot).

We all forget how miserable a record we have in Spain? Take the 1-1 any day with the squad as is and current form.

Since the player's performance threads are closed, I'll say it here: Dalot got the pelters in the matchday thread but Dorgu was equally horrendous, if not more. Poor defensively & couldn't make simple passes in offense. Really poor performance.

I thought we did alright but our attack let us down, Hojlund was terrible again although he did make a really good run at one point and might have scored if Dalot hadnt have refused to pass to him.

Sigh. Same old. We play ok and are in control, but waste a tonne of opportunities. Then out of nowhere they score, and we never look like scoring again all game.

These attackers just make it impossible to do anything. If the most you're getting is one goal a game, you need a clean sheet every week to have a hope of winning, and that's never happening. The pen was kind of shite, but that stuff happens. Even a half decent attack scores three past Sociedad here. But our guys aren't even half decent.

I don't have much hope in this competition, because out of the remaining 6 matches we could play, I don't see us scoring more than 4 or 5 goals. Since we ain't getting 6 clean sheets, a narrow defeat feels inevitable at some point. Hell, a drab 1-0 home defeat return leg feels all too likely.

I feel alot of is down to confidence and team cohesion. Everything is doom and gloom, but the players need to be stronger mentally. I don't know what Dalot was on tonight. I think Hoijlund needed better service, Zirkzee didn't look too bad and showed nice build up play. We need a world class cm to partner with Bruno, and Garnacho to show more quality in attack. But on the whole i thought we played well and definitely better than what they've served up recently.

Thought we should have won. Ridiculous penalty - if it were the other end the ref would never give it.

How is Garnacho an actual player in the top level is beyond me. All his shots are pathetic.

Also, Dorgu has already got the virus. He is very lax in his passing, very poor.

Solid European away performance.. We look solid at the back and had a few chances, but can't finish to save our lives. All to play for next week.

The lads played a good game (by our standarts atm). Gutted we haven't won it to add somme positive vibes to the lads.

What is happening with Hojlund?

Referee had more impact than him. He just strolls around watching

I don’t think he’s had a shot in about 12 games now

Can't believe how many cheap goals we give time and time again:
Today: cheapest of penalties
Fulham : set piece goal
Ipswich: two howlers
Everton: cheap set piece goal + horrible mix up between onana and maguire
Palace: cheap set piece goal

The list goes on and on and on. Absolutely infuriating!

Not a terrible game by United, but created too few chances and more importantly made way too little of the chances they had.
They got visibly gut-punched by the penalty, not much fight left in them after that.

Correct penalty, but feels quite undeserved purely by how little Real Sociedad managed to do at that phase of the game.

Overall should have been a win, the draw sure feels like a loss to me.

we got lucky, they got lucky

oh well, i cant wait for this season to end. This team isn't it

we could have wasted more money on Dorgu, that'd be manutd
And people wonder why we don't rush the youth players into the action...

It's all about the finishing. Garnacho, Dalot and Hojlund are not clinical enough in the final 3rd. It is almost like it has been coached out of them.

How many times does Garnacho hit the side netting? He did it on Sunday as well. Stop trying to score at the near post. Knock it across the goal or smash it into the roof of the net.

Dalot choosing not to slide Hojlund in for a tap in is absolutely baffling.

We should beat these lot next leg. Fans need to get behind them.

Why aren't the player's performance threads open yet?

We need to vent our frustrations and call them shit! Come on man.

This. We have a horrendous recent record against Spanish teams in Europe. With the squad we have, this is a welcome result. Minimum we could have done tonight is keep the tie alive for the 2nd leg at home which is what we have done.

Should have won that one comfortably but I'd have taken the draw before the game. Garnacho, Dalot and Dorgu were all poor. Still confident we will win the return leg.

So one bad game and you're ready to write him off. Makes total sense...

Sociedad were so bad for most the game, a good side would have finished the tie off in the first 70 minutes. We were decent but we should be punishing them giving how dreadful they were.

Bruno has zero brain, getting himself sent off and giving penalties away and united fans absolve him of blame each time so he just keeps doing it knowing his supporters will blame the ref.

After we conceded we had a mental collapse as you'd expect and were very lucky not to lose it late.

Dorgu has played what?3 matches and people are jumping on him already?Yes, he wasn't great today but come on.

It’s completely weird how many of these dodgy decisions we get against us.

The penalty was almost at the point of contact, and Bruno was jumping so hand was in natural position for a jump. 9 times out of 10, that doesn’t get given.

Anyway, Rasmus was the worst player on the pitch and not being able to control the ball with 10 yards around him. It’s just like we are playing games with 10 men. The worst thing here is that there is no one to play instead of him.

Maybe another youth striker who can be in the B squad will do better than him. All that player needs to do is control the ball and he will be better than what we have:

So disappointing

Unfortunate penalty but we should have been more than 1 goal Infront, if only we had players who could make a final pass or score, guess what the one time Garnacho makes a good decision we score, otherwise we were good

shows how mentally weak we are, one set back and we capitulate, not that I agree with Keane but this is maybe where Bruno falls short, instead of translating his anger into determination he whinges, the team needs fire in the belly not woe.

Expecting more from the attack! I didn’t see the match but just felt like no sustained pressure forward from catching updates. I’d like to be confident for the return leg yet…

Dorgu was far, far worse. Second game in a row where he has resembled a kid who was playing for the first time of his life. But it's early, so we need to show patience.

I only caught the first half, but Rasmus must've really upped the awful ante to have had a worse game than Dalot.
