Apparently we’re not allowed to do that either
i'm not an accountant but i'd be curious to learn why that wouldn't be allowed. I wouldn't trust Barca any other way to get him that back pay unless it was done under contractual obligation

The Chelsea journo's have been reporting heavily on Kounde, nothing on De Jong yet...
but they've also been saying Xavi wants Kounde at barca and could rival Chelsea.....again where is the money, how can they register him without Frenkie leaving and his wages off the bill

I really don't believe the money owned theory.
Messi still has to take cash from them, but that didnt stop either of the parties to pack his things to Paris.
I cant believe EtH is acting like a donkey - just forget him already and consider someone else... He doesn't want to be at United. Period.
It's because of how Messi's contract was structured during the period they were taking pay cuts and deferrals.
He had a clause that allowed him to keep being paid what he's owed regardless of if he stays or leaves. Not to mention he left for free which makes things easier to buying someone on a 4yr deal
Complete opposite with Frenkie who's contract is structured in a way where the money he's owed gets dissolved in the event of a transfer and it's why he's taken a firm stance to ensure he gets that money before he leaves because he won't receive a cent if he leaves prior to receiving it.

I wish someone would buy him as this is the most pointless boring saga I have witnessed on here.

At least with previous sagas there was no daily reports of the player not wanting to play for us

To be honest, Chelsea isn’t a bad option for him. They win trophies. Would fit in well. It’s a shame, if he does go there, the only explanation for not coming to United is personal dislike of the club and the city which is fair enough. It’s a shame, I think with him at 6, I won’t be surprised if we challenged for the title.

Off on holiday tomorrow for the first one since lockdown so am not gonna check in here too often, prefer to go slightly off the grid when abroad.

I doubt much will change soon - if he comes then great and if not I'm already convinced it's gonna be a much more entertaining season this year even after just watching pre-season so far.

I'm not expecting us to turn into league winners yet with or without him but the baby steps so far look good enough to trust the new manager.

Hope Frenkie's been watching too.

Time to move on, if the guy wanted to be here, he would already.

He's a decent player, but very far from unique, let's find someone else to do the job.

Would also mean he will play CL football.

Lemme guess you read the negative tweet and took it as gospel?

No mate, I looked at the calendar and saw that we've been at this for nearly 3 months now. We're deep into pre-season and still have a big hole in midfield.

He's a tidy player, but we're not talking peak Messi here, it's long past time we moved on to other options. If we don't we'll end up panic buying on deadline day.

This has been mentioned a couple of times and was seriously discussed as a possibility by the clubs last week seemingly but there appear to be legal issues, FIFA/UEFA rules and tax complications that would make this impossible.

Well I’m sure there is nothing that would prevent us from paying him extra £15m over the length of his contract and basically pitch this as a bonus to waive his due Barca salary?

They still need another central defender. Maybe even 2. They aren’t going to drop €85m on FDJ after those signings.

I think the reason these Spanish outlets are using Chelsea is because of the links with Azpi and Alonso. They could throw de Jong in and say that discussions have been held because they had a meeting etc.
Not a clue what they're trying to achieve, as if the links were real, English media would have clocked on around the same time

True true... clearly much better players out there like Tielemans and Neves i suppose

It's a about risk. Who would you rather start the season with McTominay or Neves ?

It's Fabregas all over again and you know what we did on deadline day then.

It's nothing like Fabregas. Barca told us to do one with Fabregas because they had no intention of selling. We continued to ask and bid and they kept on say no.
I don't know if Fabregas wanted to come, some were saying he wanted playing time and was happy to come to us to get it, but Barca gave him that in the end

CL Football shouldn't really be an issue. It's decided season by season. Whats saying he joins Chelsea, plays in the CL, falls at the first knockout stage, then Chelsea finish 5th and don't qualify, wheras we play in the EL, win it and get into the CL, or finish in the top 4.

CL is a season, by season thing, just because you qualify one season, doesn't mean you won't the next

What are they trying to achieve though? Haven’t United already met Barca’s supposed asking price? What would involving Chelsea achieve? United are already standing there shouting ‘take my money’.

Pressuring United to pay his deferred wages one way or another, I suppose

As posted above, to pressure United to work with them to sort the wage issue rather than stand aside and watch on whilst they struggle to do it themselves

Maybe, maybe not, it could simply be a case of De Jong not saying an out right no to to us just to keep his options open and we are still chasing becuase there is a small glimmer of hope.
I suppose it’s not impossible. But normally, if you ask a girl out and she says no, you don’t go to the father, ask if you can go out with the girl, get his blessing, then go back and beg the girl to go out with you. You move on. Once the girl says no, it’s over. If she says no again, it’s definitely over.

ETH strikes me as incredibly practical. Unless he was given a thumbs up by Frenkie, we wouldn’t be continuously pursuing.

I'm not going to flat out say that there's nothing to these Chelsea stories but it is odd to me that we've only seen maybe one or two reports from journalists on the Chelsea side (all of which I believe have come from Jacob Steinberg) claiming that Chelsea are even interested at all. It's even more strange when one considers that the move doesn't, at present, make a whole lot of sense from a squad-building perspective since Chelsea already have an abundance of midfielders.

The thing is Chelsea qualify for the Champions league every season, Utd dont.

I'm pretty sure theres nothing in them to be fair. It was reported in Spain 4 hours ago. In that 4 hours, not a single Uk journo has confirmed or even mentioned it.
That seems very suspicious to me. Even Romano and Romero haven't said anything to my knowledge. You'd expect one of them to come in and say something wouldn't you?

Gathering pace

Yeah... until you get to this part:
According to Spanish news outlet Relevo, his current employers Barcelona are aware that the Blues are preparing a formal offer for De Jong. They have made their interest known over the past few hours with a bid expected to be lodged.
