I never be that critical of Zaha because he was not given a chance here at all. I think his entire Manchester United career was three substitute appearances and a start in the Community Shield. And he was having a good season for Crystal Palace until the team wide collapse in form midseason.

I'm sad when I see him, he looks like a nice guy and United treated him badly.

The mighty force of creativity that is Wilfred Zaha and his 2 goals and 1 assist in 29 starts and 4 sub appearances this season.

He'd have made all the difference.

Pfffft, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about, it's all about the 'take-ons'.

Do Manchester United fans want fourth if it means Louis van Gaal stays?

Achieving Champions League football could keep the manager in his job. Saturday’s tedious win against Aston Villa is the latest reminder that Manchester United fans face a dilemma

Just imagine what a cheer Louis van Gaal will get if he manoeuvres his side into an unlikely fourth place and secures himself another season at Old Trafford. There will be no need for José Mourinho because the three-year plan will be back on. Ed Woodward will be able to take a break from manager-hunting and put his feet up for another six months. Van Gaal will be allowed to supervise the pre-season tour of China in the knowledge that he will still be working with the same players when the real season commences. United finishing fourth is a win-win situation, right?

I started a thread on that and basically said, I would rather no top 4 and he leaves, to top 4 and he stays.

If it had to be a choice I'd rather finish 5th and see him sacked than 4th and keep him on.

But it really shouldn't come down to that. He's been a poor manager here, it hasn't worked out, he should be gone by June 1st whatever the feck happens between now and then.

Might be different if we were on some kind of upward trajectory with a younger manager, where you could easily make the point that they were growing into the role and building experience, but with LVG he's on his way out both in terms of age and his managerial abilities.

It's all about opportunity cost. Opportunity cost of sacking LVG a season before he planned to retire: feck all.
Opportunity cost of not signing Mourinho when he's available and capable of being successful here, potentially even over a long period of time: fecking massive.

I'd gladly take 4th and another year of Van Gaal than missing champions league football twice in 3 seasons.

4th, FA Cup and he leaves with his head held high.

The Van Gaal Era would have been a mini success

In regards to keeping LVG next year, it doesn't make a difference to me if we finish in the top 4. Finishing in the top 4 is like the booby prize and if that's all we can hope for under LVG then were wasting our time. Were not going to win the champions league anytime soon anyway and even if we were in it next year I doubt it would make much of a difference in attracting players. I doubt many top players would want to play for LVG, in fact I bet a top player would rather come here with Jose as our manger and in the europa league compared to being in the champions league and with LVG at the helm.

I would take fourth even if it means Van Gaal stays. I would take an FA Cup as well even if it means Van Gaal stays.

Can you guys seriously put up with another season of this, and miss out on Jose just to achieve 4th place?
Even if we werent in the champs league, Jose would be able to attract a higher caliber of player than LVG would if we were able to somehow make it to 4th place.

LVG is toxic.

Getting Mourinho is no guarantee of success and he comes with his own baggage and negative tactics. You never know which manager might become available a year later.

If you look at Mou's record, he pretty much guarantees success and despite how awful our board is and how much work needs to be done to the team...he still wants to manage MUFC.
Its a no brainer for me. It would be foolish of us to pass up on him and hope a top tier manager becomes available next season.

If you had a choice between Mourinho and no champions league next season or someone like Pochettino or Simeone the year after, which would you choose? Keep in mind we have a really good crop of youngsters coming through and either of those guys have a track record of promoting youngsters instead of buying 28 year old stop gaps like Pedro.

Never understood the getting Jose is no guaratee of success argument. NO manager is guaranteed success. Even if SAF came out of retirement it wouldn't guarantee anything. Jose is just more likely to be a success than anyone out there, including Simeone and Pochettino who actually hasn't won anything.

Simeone has won a La Liga in a league dominated by the last two champions league winners along with a UEFA cup.

Haha of course him.

haha phew...got a complex, after pointing out to some woman from work boasting that her marketing diploma is the equivalent of a masters degree...that erm...it isn't...
she aint happy....

What is football all about to you then?

Football is about entertainment and comprmising that for the bare minimum of result is not what it is about. Angers me there are fans like you. What exactly is the point of being in the CL when there is 0 chance of winning it under this clown anyway?

Anybody saying they'd take 4th this year with the condition of having to endure LVG for another season doesn't exactly understand why most fans want him out of the club in the first place. What worth is CL next season other than some financial bottom line? We'll just inevitably bounce out of the group stages or get hammered the minute we come up against any of the big guns. He has done more than enough to warrant around three sackings at any club with serious ambition, the fact he's still here is laughable and rival fans are just dying for our board to act like utter dunces and keep him on. How anyone would 'gladly' keep him on at this stage under some hopeful scenario is baffling and they obviously don't really want him sacked at all.

Also this obsessive thing about how Mourinho 'doesn't bring through youth' is both a fallacy in itself and a questionable concern. Why exactly are we sacking Van Gaal? Why did we sack Moyes? Why aren't we giving the main job to Warren Joyce? What is the main priority for the club right now? Are we focusing on bringing through youth players and getting 4th or are we looking to get back to being an elite club winning and seriously challenging for major trophies? I get that it's great to see Rashford etc. doing well but our next appointment shouldn't be weighing on whether they'll give the kids enough games. Mourinho has shown he's more than willing to bring through young players if their good enough for the first team, he just doesn't do it for the sake of it, like some United fans would prefer it seems. His priority for every team he's managed is getting the very best out of the first team and doing what's required to make them as competitive as they can be. If we hire him it's because we want to get back to winning the league and challenging in Europe, something we will never do under Van Gaal.

0 chance of advancing past the group stage, nevermind winning it.

absolutely spot on. CL means nothing with him here.

You say that football is not about compromising for the bare minimum result and wish for an even worse outcome just to fire a manager. That's illogical. As a supporter, I want United to win every game and get the best possible result, if we have a chance for 3rd or 4th, I won't wish that we get 5th. I also want a club of United's stature to play the likes of Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Bayern year after year. Those are big clubs and win or lose, those will be big games.

those big games you mention would be bloodbaths... like feeding lambs to the slaughterhouse. think what happened against tottenham, except worse.

Jeez no chance, he has beaten my love for the game nearly out of me over these last two years, another year would just about finish me off.

For sanity's sake we need a change, no matter what happens over these last few games.

I'd much rather miss out on top 4 than him staying for another year. If he stays then the hope for next season is killed already while if Mourinho comes I can be optimistic about our future and look forward to it

LVG can't even conjure up tactics to see off PSV and Wolfsburg, so being in any sort of European competition with him still in charge is a totally worthless endeavor from a purely football perspective.

fantastic post, encapsulated exactly how I feel.

Exactly this , some of our fans really piss me off with their shortsightedness.
