Reds Release Youngster
Lee Sims has left Manchester United on a free transfer. The 19-year-old United full-back was part of last season's successful FA Youth Cup side. Sims did not make any first-team appearances for the Reds.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton was the hero for United as the third derby meeting of the season ended honours even.

The 17-year-old stopper, making only his fourth appearance for the reserves, was forced to pull off a string of top class saves late in the second half as City went in search of a winner.

On reflection, the 1-1 score-line was a fair result as both sides battled it out in a highly entertaining match.

The game began brightly and United could have taken the lead as early as the 6th minute when Kieran Richardson fired a shot just wide of Arni Arason’s far post.

The attacking play continued from Ricky Sbragia’s side and Richardson went close on three separate occasions.

At the other end United were fortunate not to give away a penalty on 19 minutes after the referee deemed City’s Glenn Whelan had dived in the box under pressure from Reds defender Jonathan Spector.

Nevertheless it was the Blues who eventually made the breakthrough 9 minutes later thanks to a neat finish from Stephen Elliott.

United gave away possession deep in their own half allowing Paolo Wanchope to slide the ball through to his strike partner Elliott, who duly applied the finish with a clever turn and dummy past Mark Lynch.

The second half began in much the same fashion as the first – pacey, attacking football with neither side afraid to commit men forward.

Spector was unlucky not to level the score straight after the re-start when his shot from Chris Eagles’s corner was blocked on the line by Danny Warrender, but thankfully the equaliser arrived four minutes later, albeit via an own goal from Blues captain Paddy McCarthy following some good work down the right by Colin Heath.

City looked the more likely to sneak a winner after that and they were unlucky to see what looked like a fair goal ruled out for offside.

They continued to pile forward but found themselves up against a brick wall in the shape of Heaton, who saved his best for last, diving low down to his right to parry away Bradley Wright-Phillips’s strong header in the final minute.

United team: Heaton, Lynch, Pugh, Tierney, Spector, Jones, Eagles, Fox, Richardson, Heath, Cooper.
Subs: Picken for Eagles (89).

They were really lucky not to loose this game!!

Seems like Spector is making a place for himself in the Reserves lately. He's been in several matches and his name always appears in the reviews. I haven't been able to see him play with United yet (only Youth WC and Dallas Cup last year) - anyone have any info on his playing style/progression?

I've seen the last 2 reserve games, Brum away and city away, and he has excelled in both. Brum game was a bit one-sided with United dominating (despite final score of only 2-1) but everything he had to do he did well. city game this week was more of a test and again he came through it with great credit.

He seems very composed and is comfortable bringing the ball forward out of defence if it is prudent to do so. He also seems to read the game well for one so young, just 18 this month, and instinctively gets himself into the right places to cover danger.

He has a chance to progress well. Very early days still of course but I like what I've seen thus far.

he is brilliant! he'll be going to usa in the summer and playing in first team towards the end of next season!

and is comfortable bringing the ball forward out of defence

Spector was a striker up until about 2 years ago, that's why he's comfortable on the ball. He was finding it hard to get playing time at that position with the U.S. U-17 team, so the coach moved him to central defense just to get him on the field. His first tournament at that position was a big tournament in Ireland, where he supposedly shut down some big name youngster (not sure who). Just so happens that someone from Manchester United was watching that game, and, well, look where he is now.

Not sure if anyone has noticed, but City have had excellent youth and reserve teams for the last couple of seasons--better than ours! They'll start coming through soon to the first team. Might not be a bad idea to nick some more of their kids, like we did with Giggs and Brown.

i played with him my sophmore year at an Indiana University summer camp when he was still a striker and during a scrimmage he did a "rainbow" to perfection over my friend Ben who is a 3 year all-state defender. i think he should start playin as a full back and understudy John O'Shea so that he can use his defending and ball handling skills the most.

Does anyone think that Spector has a future as a CM in the same mould as Vieira or Keano?

Ahh yes, since you brought that up there's a young Irish player over there who shone at the youth world cup. Also came on as a sub against Bolton I think recently.

To early to tell....We´ll know more next season when he has played more games in the Reserves.
Many at OT seems to have beliefs in the lad tho, and think he could make the grade.

Bradford City have revealed they failed in their attempt to sign Manchester United starlet Chris Eagles before Thursday's transfer deadline.
The 18-year-old has attracted the interest of The Bantams and Walsall in recent weeks after making his first team breakthrough in Sir Alex Ferguson's squad during United's 3-2 Carling Cup win at Leeds United earlier this season.

After the Valley Parade outfit lost the services of midfielders Paul Evans and Paul Reid on Thursday, Bradford boss Bryan Robson quickly went back to his old club to try and bring the promising youngster to the cash-strapped West Yorkshire side.

According to Bradford's official website, Ferguson agreed to a loan deal for the rest of the season for Eagles about 20 minutes before Thursday's 5pm deadline.

However, the Division One strugglers were unable to complete the necessary paperwork in time - with Eagles having been in transit to London at the time.

United striker Fraizer Campbell on target for England U17

John Peacock's U17 side won both their remaining second round qualification games to book a safe passage into the European Championship finals...

The young Lions had already qualified going into their final game against Norway yesterday, thanks to results in the other games and England's 1-0 win over Iceland o*n Friday, Frazier Campbell scoring that games o*nly goal deep into added o*n time at the end of the second half.

The luxury of having already qualified meant that Peacock could rest key players, but the changes made little difference to the current run of good form, England running out victors o*nce again, coming from behind to win 2-1 thanks to goals from West Ham's Kyle Reid and another strike from Man Utd's Frazier Campbell.

Coach Nigel Pearson commented after the Norway game.

"We played some good attacking football, and finished the tournament o*n a high note. By qualifying for the finals the players now get a chance to further add to their experience, and by being undefeated in six games can be quietly confident of their chances irrespective of who we get drawn against."

The draw for the finals themselves takes place this coming Friday, and recent results will mean the team won't fear anyone and will be confident of upstaging the previous group of U17's who managed to reach the Semi Final's last year.

Six of the final eight countries due to take part have already been decided. They are - England, Turkey, Portugal, Ukraine and Austria while France qualify as hosts.

he won't move there. the best person to do that role is david jones. he got his first callup for the england u21's. he is a brilliant player, last years FA youth cup captain.

or the next player to play like viera is ngalula. not only is he as spitting image of him but plays similar. he was a defender when we bought him but then moved him to the centre of midfield

does anyone know if the u17 europe finals are on tv?

i want to watch the progress of the united lads and the france we were meant to be after, jeremy menez.

but well done to campbell, when i see him play heplays well and in the last couple of weeks seems as if he's shot up a little.

That's a good name for it...we don't have one I don't think. Same with the one where you knock it round one side of a player and run round the other...we call it 'knocking it round one side of a player and running round the other'.

Now - "scrimmage"?

 Good sign if Jones can get into the U21 squad, he's only 19 and most of the England squad are playing regular first team football. He's also eligible for Wales apparently.

I don't get to see the youth team, but it sounds like there are at least a handful of first team canidates in the pipeline.

I've only seen Spector, the yank CB play and he did look a strong, determined player and against good youth teams- Brazil and Spain. He will have to be good though- if a CB, then he doesn't have many alternatives(unless he can play some CM or full back), the established CB's are fairly young- Rio, Wes, Mik, JOS and his peer McShane gets everyones vote as a likely first-teamer. Then if SAF adds another young defender in the summer, like Mexes, he will have quite a battle to break through.

Mombasa Combined triumph over Man-Utd
By SUNDAY NATION Reporter

Mombasa Combined under-15 registered a deserved 2-1 victory over visiting Manchester United under-15 in an entertaining match at the Mombasa Sports Club yesterday morning.

The match attracted a big crowd including ministers Najib Balala and Karisa Maitha, British High Commissioner Sir Edward Clay and Coast Provincial Director of Education Khadija Karim.

Crowd favourite Manchester United striker Fabian Brandy kept the Mombasa Combined defenders busy throughout the match.

Also outstanding on the Manchester United side were Michael Narkiallo, Jamie Clarke and goalkeeper Kris Anderson, who played a great game.

Mombasa relied on goalkeeper Hassan Ali, Hassan Koka, Abdulrahman Karama, Amos Chona and Nabil Balala, minister Balala's son, to keep them in the game.

Koka scored Mombasa's first goal in the 25th minute from a Yahya Aboud cross.

Karama scored the second goal two minutes later from a defensive mix- up for a 2-0 half-time score.

Narkiallo headed in Manchester United's goal in the 76th minute from Brandy's corner kick.*

Manchester United coach Tomy Whelan blamed the defeat on the scorching Mombasa heat.

He also said the congested programme the players have had which has seen them visit several recreational centres and charity home had exhausted the boys and promised they will put a strong fight in the remaining matches.

Manchester lads win last Kenya tour match
By CHRIS TSUMA*

The visiting Manchester United under-15 soccer side ended its tour of Kenya with a 4-1 win over Mathare United under-15s at Kasarani yesterday.

The visitors were 3-0 up in the first 25 minutes of the game which was played for 40 minutes each half. The Manchester captain, Sam Hewson put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute beating Mathare goalkeeper Gabriel Onyango with hard shot from outside the box.

It was 2-0 for the visitors four minutes later when Fabian Brandy, the most exciting player on the Manchester attack, capitalised on slack marking from the Kenyans to beat Onyango.

Hewson made it three in the 21st minute when crashed home a rebound after Onyango had punched Leon Quarless' penalty back into play to give the visitor a 3-0 lead at half time.

Mathare tried to come back into the game in the first half but were put down by the pace and physique of the bigger Manchester players who won most of the 50-50 balls. Still, Alex Isundu, a crafty little forward with some very delightful touches and runs, was able to pull one back for the hosts.*

He pounced onto a rebound off Christian Bwamy's shot in the 54th minute and beat Chris Backhouse with a hard shot which crashed in off the crossbar.

Mathare were caught on the break as they poured forward in search of a goal that would bring them back into the game which they nearly got but unfortunately saw their effort come back off the crossbar for the second time in less than three minutes.

The hosts then conceded the fourth goal in the 76th minute through Michael Nardello who breached the hosts' central line to score. He should have got a fifth a minute later but his shot was scrambled off the line by Mathare's Duncan Machoka.

Coach Gabriel Njoroge, who was in charge of the Mathare youth was please with his boys' effort. "I think they played well. Manchester are better organised of course and are bigger and faster but my boys competed well," he said at the end of the game.

There were multiple substitutions with many players, especially from the Manchester side taking a break and going back into the game.

Manchester were due to leave for home last evening.

* For a match between two under-15 side, yesterday's match between Manchester United and Mathare United attracted quite a sizeable crowd.

There were about 7,000 spectators at Kasarani to watch this final match of the 10-day tour by the Manchester boys, many more than the top league sides in Kenya can ever dream of attracting to their matches, especially in the current circumstances where there are two separate leagues running parallel to each other.

It showed the interest the game enjoys in Kenya even If most of the spectators were there to see the Manchester, not Mathare United.

Such is the popularity of the Manchester team that the Nation Media Group staff led by Phil Mathews and Bob Kioko had a difficult time ensuring that all the other television stations were only allowed limited filming of the match from behind the goals since the Nation has had exclusive rights for tour.

The occasion was also a tribute to the Mathare United youth development programme which has age categories from under 10 years to the senior team. This makes Mathare the only team with a structure that sustains a youth development programme that produces quality players.

After the match, Manchester United legend, Sir Bobby Chaltorn, presented trophies and medals to the teams . Afterwards, Minister of Sports, Najib Balala, presented a cheque of Sh100,000 to Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA).

ive heard that move called a "sitting cow" before but thats a horrible name. it has a decent name in basketball when u do the same move but obviously with a basketball but i cant think of the name of it.

a scrimmage is basically what you would call a friendly but since it was just a camp team and not official clubs it was more like a practice match so i said scrimmage instead

Ben Williams seems to be doing quite well at Crewe...

Praise for Williams
Story by Dink 5 April 2004

Loan keeper Ben Williams has certainly made a name for himself whilst onloan from Manchester United. Neil Baker says that the club may sign him permanently.

Williams joined in March due to an injury to Clayton Ince. The 21 year old is fourth choice at Manchester United and isn't looking likely to be getting near the first team for a few years, if ever.

In his four games since signing Williams has been nothing short of outstanding, his debut saw him deny Cardiff for 70 minutes with wonderful saves until a freak incident saw him concede a own goal. He won the game against Stoke with fine saves when Stoke were on top and kept the score at Forest down. On Saturday he kept Rotherham out with a fantastic double save and another good three or four saves, whilst looking to command the back four unlike Ince and Bankole.

He's won fans over and has simply been a class above the division since signing, winning us four points. Fans have questioned if Ben could be signed from Man Utd permanently and assistant manager Neil Baker certainly hopes so...

"He has settled in well and the crowd have really taken to him. They want us to sign him up, although it's not quite as straight forward as that!

"But it is something that we are giving consideration to, although we aren't sure if he is going to be released by Manchester United and I am sure other clubs are taking notice of his performances here. But we will look at it at the end of the year."

If the Alex can't sign Williams on a permanent deal then the next best thing is to try and get him on a season long loan for next season... here's hoping.

Thought I'd take brief look at what has happened since I posted the My views on our gems...

Team-wise it hasn't been, in the 1st team mould, the best of periods for the young ones, though nothing catastrophic either. U17's finished (at least it seems so?!?) third 7 points behind winners, the blue scousers. They managed to win only two games after the New Year, drawing and losing four times. U19's had a bit dissappointing season as they finished 6th almost 20 points behind winners, Shity. Though they won six games after the New Year, lost five times and drew three times. The Reserves season still on. Their new year has started with six wins, one defeat and three draws. Youngster couldn't quite make it to become back to back FA Youth Cup champions, but they're playing at Manchester Senior Cup final... So all in all it has been an OKish season for them.

Player-wise there have some things worth mentioning, of which most, if not all have been discussed here.

Goalkeepers: Williams is doing fine, but he might be released during the summer; Heaton has recieved some praises for his appearances and is seemingly developing in to a quality keeper; much talked Steele is having a quiet spell, is he injured or something?; others have made some appearances even for the reserves, so we're obviously doing well at this sector.

Defenders: Bardsley is doing OKishly and will be a better player when he returns; Howard has been a regular for the Reserves sidelining the likes of McShane; Lawrence, thought he was released or loaned to a Conference team; Lynch has certainly lost the battle, might make for good division level player; McShane had a good start for the new year, but something has hampered him lately; hyped Ngalula hasn't done too much lately; Pugh is quite near of leaving the club as well; Sims was released; Spector has been outstanding, at least that's what I've read, certainly has a bright future ahead of him; not sure wheather Tierney is on loan or not, but if he is to break through time is getting short for him; some new faces have appeared for our young Reserve side, so seemingly there is some quality coming through as well.

Midfielders: Chadwick's chances are very slim; same applies to Djordjic; Eagles has kept on progressing quickly and is playing regularly for the Reserves; Hussaine reportedly has changed his loan address to Lisbon; Collett, Fox, Jones, Martin and Neumayr, the ones with higher reputation haven't been making the headlines; Richardson has regained his status as one the most promising youngsters, with his at times great displays; Stewart's days are all but numbered; SAF's favourite son, Timm is on loan at Viking Stavanger, if he matures enough there he might be a candidate for the 1st team next season; Matty Williams was released; Wood is having a loan period at Burnley; some good some not so good, but it definately looks like we are going see one midfielder breaking through in the near future.

Attackers: Callistre was on the news today; Campbell scored for England; Cooper hasn't been getting as much games during the spring period as he did earlier; Dong is adapting to a completely new life at Antwerp, reportedly has played well recently; Ebanks hasn't been too hot; Heath has had a few good games after he returned from Antwerp; Johnson has been tagged as the saviour of Antwerp, which tells you all you need to know, we might see him somewhere near the 1st team next season of he keeps on working hard; Nardiello is having a good loan spell at Barnsley; Puustinen was on fire when he played for Finland U17's, but hasn't played too much lately; some new faces have appeared for the Reserves as well; looking good here as well.

These are of course only my opinions and critisism is more than welcome. I have no doubts that we're going to keep on producing young talents of the highest quality in the future as well! It's also interesting to see whether we'll keep on signing young talents from all around the globe, in the way we have done lately. Future is bright, future is RED!

When Spector signed for United last Summer, as a 17yo, he said he wanted to go from the U19 to the reserves in the first season, it sounded a little optimistic, but he's doing the business.

good post jacuzzi but i only disagree with you on 2 players.

firstly, martin had a cracking debut but sfter thst he was still playing well. he's been injured lately which has halted his progression but i am really positive that he will make the grade of fiirst team in 2-3 years. he'l be in the youth and reserve team next season just like eagles has this.

and mainly the second player i disagree with you is david jones.

this lad has just as much chance of making the grade as any of the lads, maybe even more. he's had a good season and very consistent, which reflects on his england u-21 call up. to be fair i don't know how he played for them but for united he has been excellent.

i agree on you that i think the time for lynce, tierney and pugh's time is up. i think even fox and heath will leave.

also the wher abouts of steele is a mystery! does anyone know where he is?

i think i might have to report him missing to the police!

p.s spector has been brilliant, expect to see him in the first team towards the end of next season!

But we can't have any mullets in the first team-

i think he'll be more involved.

SAF seems to drag him everywhere, he was at the game on saturday again.

i think he'll have to play more, and play well, in the US then he will get his chance. i really hope he can make the grade.

his got all the potential but i believe he needs to be more positive, he needs to attack more. he's got great pace and he needs to use it well!

"Critisism" accepted... As I've told before my ideas on our youth teams are purely based on internet sources as I don't have MUTV nor live right next door to Carrington or Moss Lane.
It's good to know that Martin's doing fine and Jones is doing even better (I actually forgot that he was called up to the England U21's, so my bad). And I agree with you lot on Spector. I saw him playing at U17's WC in my hometown last summer and there was no doubt in my mind that he's going to be a top class player with an attitude.

Hey red thru&thru! Since you seem to know quite a lot about our prospects, any chance of you making some notes in the My views on our gems -mould?!?

Even more praise from Gradi to Williams ( beeb)

----------

Gradi keen to keep Williams

Crewe boss Dario Gradi is hoping to extend Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Williams' loan spell with the club.

"I haven't spoken to Manchester United about him coming here because they probably want to keep hold of him," Gradi told the club's website.

"I will look to extend his loan with us and if we could extend that into next season then that would create the competition we are looking for.

"I will do what is in the best interest of the lad and Manchester United.

"They went out of their way to help us on deadline day and we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

"He has been terrific for us, has not made any mistakes and looks assured."
