United's Youth Side Progress - Manchester United 4-2 Norwich City
17/2/04 7:43 PM
United have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup after coming from behind to beat Norwich City 4-2 at Old Trafford.
The cup holders spurned a great chance to take the lead after ten minutes when Paul Mcshane headed over from Adam Eckersley's pinpoint free kick.
United were left to rue that missed opportunity five minutes later, when a Norwich break left the visitors with two attackers against Mark Howard.
Nicky Howell left the defender for dead before rounding goalkeeper Tom Heaton and sliding the ball into the empty net.
Norwich continued to apply pressure, and they almost extended their lead twice in three minutes, with Heaton saving well from Blackburn's long-range effort before Danny Crow's shot deflected just over the bar off Jonathan Spector.
Chris Eagles, who impressed throughout, was booked for a reckless high challenge on Norwich's Adam Smith after forty minutes.
United finally drew level three minutes before half time, albeit in fortuitous circumstances. Phil Picken's curling cross sailed over the head of Ebanks-Blake, but Norwich defender
Matthew Halliday buried the header past his own goalkeeper.
Five minutes after half-time, United had their noses in front through a fine goal by
Mark Howard. Phil Picken curled a free-kick into the Norwich box from thirty yards out, and Howard rose well to steer a header into the top corner.
Tom Heaton in the United goal was finally called into after 65 minutes, making a fine double block from Crow and Howell as the visitors looked to claw themselves back into the tie.
Norwich almost drew level 12 minutes from time as Lee Blackburn's 20-yard drive flew fractionally wide of Heaton's post.
United put the game to bed almost immediately afterwards as captain
McShane headed in a Chris Eagles free-kick.
The scoreline took on a flattering look with five minutes to go as the lively
Calliste won and then converted a penalty, and Ebanks-Blake was denied a deserved goal by a decent block from Lewis.
Adam Smith hit a 20 yard screamer to spare some of the Canaries' blushes in injury time.
Despite a poor start and a couple of subsequent scares, United deserved to progress to the next stage. Martin, Jones and Eagles gave superb all-round performances, while the crowd were excited by Ramon Calliste's twenty minute contribution.
The Reds will be away to either Blackburn or Gillingham in the next round.
