Youth Reports

From MEN:

FA Youth Cup: Man Utd 2 Man City 0

Million-pound teenager Lee Martin limped out of the action at Old Trafford as holders United came out on top in the FA Youth Cup Manchester derby.

Martin's potential persuaded Sir Alex Ferguson to pay Wimbledon an initial £200,000 last month with the promise of more to follow, but the 16-year-old was a muted force before suffering a hamstring strain 15 minutes from time.

The home side still took another step towards a record 10th triumph in the competition in front of a 5,000-plus crowd including Ferguson, Kevin Keegan and Roy Keane.

But the evening will not be remembered with too much fondness by Kasper Schmeichel.

On the ground where his father played so many starring roles, the young Dane brought back some old memories with a massive throw over the halfway line to set up one City attack.

Caught out

Unfortunately for Schmeichel, who will be on the bench for the first-team in their FA Cup replay at Leicester, he was caught out of position for both United goals.

First, he advanced too far as Sylvan Ebanks-Blake chased down a loose ball inside the City box, allowing the United striker to deftly lift a cross over the stranded keeper, giving Ramon Calliste the easiest of finishes.

Then, within a minute of Martin's departure, Schmeichel failed to come for a routine punt downfield and Callum Flanagan muscled his way in to head home.

City did have their moments, notably when Nedum Onuoha crashed a header against a post from Carlos Logan's free-kick.

But though the visitors held sway in midfield for much of the contest, United's defence, led superbly by skipper Paul McShanem, succeeded in snuffing out most of their advances before they got close to threatening Tom Heaton's goal.

not sure if this writer saw match but Martin was very good expecially in first half and the united midfield were in control for most of match

Agreed I was very impressed with Martin. Blake also had a good game. Our defence waqs generally sound except for crosses where, I've got to admit City looked very effective in thatarea.

Nevertheless its always good to bear Citeh ;)

United will be playing Norwich City in the next round of the FA Youth Cup after Norwich beat Sheff Utd 2-0 last night.

2 goals and an assist, not bad at all :D i dont see why we dont loan out more players to nationwide teams

Just heard that Eddie Johnson has scored on his debut for Royal Antwerp  I'll try to confirm this soon.

Tate to leave

Manchester United defender Alan Tate is on the brink of sealing a permanent move to Swansea City.
The tough-tackling centre back has spent two separate spells on loan at Vetch Field but returned to Old Trafford recently, and made an appearance in the reserve team defeat to Everton last week.

Brian Flynn is hopeful of wrapping up a deal to sign the 21-year-old this week, with talks underway in an attempt to complete the signing.

Tate also had a temporary stint with United's feeder club Royal Antwerp in 2001/2002, but has been unable to work his way into Sir Alex Ferguson's first team squad plans.

The Swans have also confirmed the arrival of West Ham's Shaun Byrne, on loan, as the Welsh side, still in the FA Cup after their heroics against Preston at the weekend, look to bolster their resources.

Eddie Johnson did scored on his debut and played the whole game. Bardsley came on at half-time as well.

From the Antwerp website www.rafc.be

If anyone can translate the match report it would be great.

I've taken the liberty of running through the match report on Royal Antwerp's website via a free online translation site, and have come up with some interesting, and hilarious results. It's not foolproof, so cut me some slack here!

I'm also amazed how no one seems to care nor even mention about the other Manchester United players who are in the Royal Antwerp squad. Souleymane Mamam, who is at least three years younger than Eddie Johnson and Mads Timm, has already established himself in the Antwerp first eleven as an attacking midfielder. Arthur Gomez was on the bench with Bardsley for the game against Heusden-Zolder. Not sure what's happened with Abdulrahman Yasser Hussain, read some good things about him, but seems to be missing, either due to injury or Qatar national team duty.

So here's the translation of the three bits in the match report that mentioned Eddie Johnson. Mamam also played in the starting eleven, but the report made no comment about his performance.

(1) Anwerp plays again with a strengthened middle field and with Shishuba in support of simply pointed Eddie Johnson.

[I take it that Johnson was the centre-forward spearhead a la Van Nistelrooy]

(2) Eddie Johnson sticks than become nose at the window, after badly remove of the visiting apology, but be shot through a green-white bone cracked. Heusden is boss Antwerp not tries well on to fall, and in the end phase of the first half even fanatical, but it hits really till in the neighborhood of Bailly. We drink tea by 0-1

[Hilarious. It probably means Johnson really got stuck in Hughes/Whiteside-style.]

(3) Sishuba enters only through on Bailly, the Heusdense goalie can its shot yet stop but the goedgevolgde and tireless Johnson kicks the 1-1.

[God knows what's "goedgevolgde", but if its paired with "tireless", we can safely assume it's a good thing! Sounds like a creditable performance overall.]

Also has Simeon Jackson passed his trial or is he back at Rushden and Diamonds?

A quick Google took me to rdfc.net where I found a small piece on their forum suggesting that, on or around the 30th January, he featured on the back page of the local paper suggesting that he was about to go out on trial to city(!!) and that a fee had been agreed already presuming the trial to be successful.

So presumbably he wasn't MUQ?

Barnsley are set to run the rule over Ben Williams after he joined the club on trial from Manchester United.
The 21-year-old keeper is a regular in United's reserves, but is believed to want first-team football.

Williams undertook loan spells with Coventry and Chesterfield in the 2002-03 season, but is yet to make a senior appearance for The Red Devils.

The Tykes already have one Old Trafford youngster in the squad, after Sir Alex Ferguson allowed Daniel Nardiello (pictured) to join on loan.

Williams will play in two non first-team matches for Barnsley and is in line to feature for the club's reserves against Tranmere Rovers

Internet based information on our youth teams, ie. U17´s & U19´s & the FA Youth Cup team & the reserves as well, is arguably rather poor (apart from this hugely popular thread of course). To me it seems weird taking into consideration what an important part of this great club youth development has been. I therefore would like to thank everyone who´s been involved in the making of this valuable piece information during the past two seasons!

Knowing (?) there are a few lads at the caf having some extra knowledge on our future stars (due to attending games and watching MUTV) I would be truly grateful should anyone be interested in writing some sort of reports on the first halves of the youth teams seasons. Just some views on the development and potentials of the lads (especially on the not-so-well-known-ones).

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

P.S. Someone should make links to the Tine´s Antwerpen-thread and to the last seasons Youth Reports -thread, as I don´t know how to do it...

Thanks Melv! Actually I found thread from the Mods forum saying - as some might recall - that due to technical problems caused by too many posts in it, the Youth Reports 2002/03 -thread has somewhat destroyed itself! :(

NIALL! MODS! Any news on this subject? Should we, as a precaution start a Youth Reports 2003/04 vol. 2 -thread?!?

BTW, it was reported last week that young winger Danny Byrne, who had a rather unsuccessful loan period at Hartlepool earlier this season, was released by club. Good luck to him! Link

Oh! Another thought sprang in to my mind while searching for that thread I mentioned. I realised that there were quite a few smallish threads about youngsters all around the forum. A "link-expert" having too much sparetime could do one heck of a job by posting links to at least some of them. Just a thought... I suppose there´s too much work in it.

Sbragia Makes Reserve Changes

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not been included in tonight's reserve team to face Bury in the Manchester Senior Cup, indicating Sir Alex may be ready to include the Norwegian striker in Saturday's FA Cup Derby against Man City.

Ricky Sbragia includes David Bellion in an attacking line-up to face Bury at Moss Lane, while Ben Collett makes the bench for the first time since suffering a broken leg at the end of last season.

The Bury-born 19-year-old midfielder played half an hour for the Under-19s in a 3-1 win over Bolton at the weekend and makes his long-awaited return from a nine-month injury lay-off.

Collett won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award last season, impressing in the FA Youth Cup and scoring United's crucial second goal in the first leg of the final against Boro.

Collett joined in the celebrations as United lifted their ninth Youth Cup title at Old Trafford. As a reward for the youngster's performances in the competition, Ben was handed his first start for the reserves in the final match of the season, also against Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

However, in an innocous challenge just before half time, Collett suffered a broken leg, a nightmare end to what was an excellent season for the left-sided midfielder.

Tonight's match at Moss Lane kicks off at 7pm.

Meanwhile, Ricky Sbragia's side will face Newport County in a friendly match on Wednesday 31 March at Newport Stadium (Kick-off 7:45pm).

United Team: James Jowsey; David Fox, Danny Pugh, Mark Lynch, Lee Lawrence; Kieran Richardson, David Jones, Mads Timm, David Bellion; Matty Williams, Colin Heath. Subs: Kenny Cooper, Tommy Lee (GK), David Poole, Ben Collett.

Interesting that decision on Ole; I´ve my doubts on wheather he is ready for first team action so soon after recovery.
Another thing that caught my eye is that squad. I mean look the ages of those lads! They´re mostly under twenty and yet they´re playing against adults (though it´s only Bury).

MY VIEW ON OUR GEMS (1/5)

While I´m at it, I decided to take a look at our future gems myself. My knowledge is quite scarce and could well be false at some occasions. I´ve seen only a handful of ´em lads in action either on tv or on field (mainly Spector during U17´s World Championships in Finland last summer). In addition to that I´ve kept an eye on what has been said about the boys all around internet. I decided to include Flecher and co just for comparisonal reasons. Feel free to correct me and/or make a list of the same kind yourselves. The namelist and data is based on CM 03/04… It´s not much, but here goes for nothing.

Introduction

We´ve got a few respected coaches, a´la Choccy (U19´s), Sbragia (reserves) and Maulensteen (academy), to bring the best out of the lads. I think the decision to appoint some foreing wizards [Filho (U17´s), etc.] to work at Carrington was a masterstroke. That, together with the now-so-popular trend of signing youngsters from all around the globe should bear some fruit in a few years time. Then there is this recently widened possibility to co-operate with our feeder clubs. And yet it should be realised that our reserve team is week-in week-out very young and inexperienced. So it is obviously a good test for every young player to play in the reserves against first team strenghtened massives and scousers.

Future is bright, future is red! Though we should not forget that ”you can´t win anything with kids”!

Explanations:

Bolded and underlined = already a first team player
Bolded = almost there
Underlined = one to watch
Italic = doesn´t have what it takes, apparently
Normal = N/A

----------------------
After finalizing my post I realised that I´m the one who has too much sparetime on my hands. TBH I should´ve been writing a sociological essey and preparing myself to an uni exam. There is an obvious takeover bid about to happen, as United is trying to take over my life… :annoyed:

GOALKEEPERS

Crockett, Lee: 17, english, GK
- N/A

Daniels, Luke: 16, english, GK
- N/A

Heaton, Thomas: 17, english, GK
-quite promising youth international, has already been on bench for reserves, has a good kick

Jowsey, James: 20, english, GK
-seemingly won´t make it as he´s not getting too many games at any level nor has been on loan

Lee, Tommy: 18, english, GK
- N/A

Steele, Luke: 19, english, GK
-bought from Peterborough for £500K, youth international with huge amount of potential, only a matter of time before he gets his chance in the first team

Williams, Ben: 21, mancunian, GK
-third choice keeper during the last few seasons but debut still to be made, currently about to move on loan/permanently to Barnsley, has had a few OKish loan periods

MY VIEW ON OUR GEMS (3/5)

DEFENDERS

Bardsley, Philip: 18, mancunian, D R/C
-has surprised me greatly this season as I didn´t know anything about him earlier, Fergie rates him highly, he´s aggressive and well-build, currently on loan at Antwerp (was sent off unjustly last weekend)

Booth, Mitchell: 16, welsh, D ?
- N/A

Eckersley, Adam: 18, mancunian, D ?
-don´t know much about him, has played in the FA Youth Cup this season so obviously has some talent in him

Howard, Mark: 18, mancunian, D ?
-don´t know much about him, has played in the FA Youth Cup this season so obviously has some talent in him

Lawrence, Lee: 19, english, D ?
-don´t know much about him, has played in the FA Youth Cup this season so obviously has some talent in him

Lea, Michael: 16, mancunian, D ?
- N/A

Lynch, Mark: 22, mancunian, D R
-has had a few chances but not exactly convinsing, out of contract soon so I guess he didn´t make it, has had some loan periods

McShane, Paul: 18, irish, D C
-tough little fecker, brings the much needed aggression and no-nonsense attitude to defense, youth international who´s extremely highly rated by Gaz for example, due to our current defensive problems he might even get some first team action this season, one to watch certainly

Nevins, Adrian: 18, mancunian, D ?
- N/A

Ngalula, Floribert: 16, congoan/belgian, D/DM C
-from Anderlecht, has featured on all levels already and he´s just 16, no need for Kompany as this guy has what it takes, apparently

Picken, Philip: 18, mancunian, D ?
- N/A

Pugh, Danny: 21, mancunian, D C & M L
-had his fair share of first team action last season but didn´t convince, has recently played as a centreback, a loan move might tell us the answer

Rincón: 16, brazilian, D ?
-currently on loan at Sao Paolo and will go on to Lisbon for the next couple of seasons, highly rated south american whose abilities and potential are a bit of a mystery for every one of us I think

Simpsonhirs, Daniel: 17, salfordian, D ?
- N/A

Sims, Lee: 19, mancunian, D ?
-don´t know much about him, played in the FA Youth Cup last season so obviously has some talent in him

Spector, Jonathan: 17, american/german, D C
-was a major force for USA last summer, he´s quite commanding and as a former forward his technical abilities are good, with McShane they might form a long term partnership to the heart of United´s defence in five years time

Tierney, Paul: 21, mancunian/irish, D L/C
-has been one of the better youngsters along with ex-United player Alan Tate for a few years now, appeared in League Cup games and is on loan at Colchester ATM, not too long for him to convince

MY VIEW ON OUR GEMS (4/5)

MIDFIELDERS

Bellion, David: 21, french/senegalese, F R/C
-everyone had their doubts on this lightning fast but raw player, has developed at an acceptable speed during his stay at the club, remains to be seen wheather he´ll become the new TH

Brandy, Fabien: 16, mancunian, AM C
-what´s the fuss about this lad, is he really that exceptional?

Burns, Aaron: 16, english, AM ?
- N/A

Chadwick, Luke: 23, english, AM R/L
-a good first division class winger, won´t make it as hasn´t actually set Burnley alight

Collett, Benjamin: 19, english, M R/L
-last seasons young player of the year (Wes and Phizza are among former winners), so there might be something in this guy

Cristiano Ronaldo: 19, portuguese, AM R/L
-came in with lot of hype, still settling in, recent games suggest that he has changed his game a bit and is on course to became truely great player, remember that his still only 19!

Djordjic, Bojan: 22, swedish/serbian, AM L/C
-made his debut in a pre-season friendly a few years back but has since vanished, has an apparent attitude problem, currently on loan at Red Star (no idea how he´s doing), still might have some sort of a chance

Eagles, Christopher: 18, english, AM R/C
-the new DB ( :wenger: ), one of the most promising prospects, has already made his debut and might still get a game this season, smallish player in the the footsteps of Fletcher

Fletcher, Darren: 20, scottish/irish, M R/C
-injury-plagued years now behind him, Scotland´s brightest talent has became a part of the first team this season, SAF rates him highly and we all can agree with that, yet to make an impact though, should be given a rest IMO

Fox, David: 20, english, D/DM C
-promising player who was on loan at Antwerp earlier this season even though with little impact, already 20 so the next 12 months might be decisive for the lad

Gibson, Darren: 16, northern irish, M ?
- N/A

Hogg, Steven: 18, english, M ?
- N/A

Hussaine: 19, qatari/egyptian, M ?
-at Antwerp, has reportedly been impressive there, has an apparent attitude problem, still hottest youngsters from the Middle-East

Jones, David: 19, welsh/english, M C
-was about to make his debut against Leeds in CC, talented boy

Jones, Richard: 17, mancunian, M ?
- N/A

Johnson, Eddie: 19, english, F C
-among Bardsley, EJ has been one of the revelations this season, strong and determined forward having made his debut already and is making an instant impression at Antwerp with a goal in his debut

Lee, Kieron: 16, mancunian, AM ?
- N/A

Mamam, Souleymane: 18, togolese, AM C
-youngest player ever to play a full international at the age of 13, currently an loan at Antwerp playing regularly from the start

Martin, Lee: 16, english, M R/L/C
-highly rated newbie, who was superb against Shitty in the FA Youth Cup, on to watch obviously

Mullen, Jamie: 16, english, M ?
- N/A

Neumayr, Markus: 17, german, M R/C
-again a new DB ( :wenger: ), bright prospect with a good vision, unfortunately has been injured for a long time, one to watch

Port, Graeme: 17, scottish/english, AM ?
- N/A

Richardson, Kieran: 19, english/irish, AM L
-don´t what to think of this lad, some say his an ass and the others keep on praising him, has made a few first team appearances and has scored his first goal already, for some reason people are writing him of although his still only 19, is a wingers prototype and has a good shot

Shawcross, Ryan: 16, welsh, M ?
- N/A

Stewart, Michael: 22, scottish, DM C
-like Chadwick, has been around for a quite long time not being capable of taking the final step, on loan at division one strugglers Nottingham, good luck to him

Timm, Mads: 19, danish, F C
-has been touted as the one to watch for a long time already, was about to go on loan but for some reason decided not to, injuries have slowed his development, strong Scholes-esque player who I hope will make it

Williams, Matthew: 21, welsh, AM ?
-saw him a couple of years ago playing for Wales, didn´t impress me then and hasn´t made a name for himself since

Wood, Neil: 21, mancunian, F C
-reserve team captain now on loan at Burnley, we´ll see what becomes of him, the age factor might prevent him from making it (BTW while interviewed after his move to Burnley he said he´d had a chat with Ricky Sbragia who told him there would be no or very few chances for anyone to break in to the first team squad this season. That comment obviously means that we won´t be seeing the mcshane´s nor eagles´ getting experience unless something wierd happens)

MY VIEW ON OUR GEMS (5/5)

ATTACKERS

Calliste, Ramon: 18, welsh, F C
-was hyped last season, development seems to have slowed, has scored a few goals including the winner against massives in the Fa Youth Cup

Campbell, Frazer: 17, mancunian, S C
-the next Ebanks-Blake, has scored quite a few goals this season and has made some name for himself

Cooper, Kenny: 18, american/english, F C
-what a fairytale, unknown nobody from the States making it instantly in the Reserves, big and strong goalscorer

Dong Fangzhuo: 19, chinese, S C
-lanky boy from Asia on loan at Antwerp, remains to be seen wheather he´s a star or a product, read some good reviews about him

Ebanks-Blake, Sylvan: 17, english, S C
-maybe the most promising attacker coming through the ranks, could be the first striker for ages to break through to the first team

Flanagan, Callum: 18, mancunian, S C
-has been involved in the Youth Cup team scoring a goal against Shitty, don´t know much about him, was recently in a bad accident

Gomez, Arthur: 20, gambian, S C
-one of the Antwerp boys, a bench player there, already 20 so we´ll see

Heath, Colin: 20, english, S C
-nothing special in him or is there, played a few games for Antwerp earlier this season and now having a go at the reserves, already 20 so we´ll see

Marsh, Phillip: 17, english, S C
-don´t know much about him either, let´s how he´ll get over the accident (is he OK?)

Moran, Kyle: 16, irish, S C
- N/A

Nardiello, Daniel: 21, welsh/english, S C
-has made it in the reserve level but doesn´t seem to have what it takes to become a first team player at United, ATM having a successful loan period at Barnsley scoring three times in two games

Poole, David: 19, mancunian, S C
- N/A

Puustinen, Jami: 17, finnish, S C
-my fellow countryman, first finn ever to be a part of the United family, big and strong penalty-expert, didn´t make too much of a noise of himself here in Finland, not even at the U17´s WC, but had a good start to his United career scoring brace in his debut for the academy side

------------------
That´s about it! Looking forward to reading your views...

According to the official site U19´s won Bolton 3-1 and U17´s drew 3-3 with Blackburn last weekend. As usual no reports available...

Does anyone know anything about our youngsters´ involvement in youth internationals? I know Puustinen is part of Finland´s youth international squads. However english teams from U16´s to U21´s include surprisingly few United players. How about other countries?

Jacuzzi - you rule!

I've always been disappointed by the paucity of comprehensive info on Man Utd youth players, and so far this sticky thread has been the best, though its format takes a bit of trawling.

By any chance do you know the person who runs this site: http://sivut.koti.soon.fi/anttiu/mufc/juniors.htm

It's the ONLY site I've found that features many pictures of our youth team players, and one of the few that still mentions Daniel Rowe as a player.

Jacuzzi, I only hope that while you've based your info on the CM03-04 database, your evaluations are NOT swayed by CM's attributes.

One player that has become a sort of CM legend is Fabien Brandy. And from my web research, I think his potential has been based entirely on a single quote from the opposition coach in a single match that raved about him in a junior match.. under-14 or something, and compared him to a legend, Ronaldo or Maradona... Since then I haven't found a single REAL, non-CM reference to Brandy, yet due to the way people are wont to confuse CM with the real world, this guy has been widely mentioned and expected to emerge anytime now as the new superstar. I would really love it if anyone could find a single link online that has a match report mentioning Fabien/Fabian Brandy. All but one links I've seen are CM-related or spurious comments.

Another player that we risk over-rating based on extremely limited evidence is Rincon. I haven't found a single reference to his performance in a match of any kind, no mention of even his position, except that he's "highly-rated."

When it comes to listing youth players, I prefer the certainty of their birthdates (at least the year) than the age. Many newspapers/media outlets get the age wrong.

Abdulrahman Hussain's (1984) name has been mangled many ways with Yasser/Yassa and Abdulrahman/Abdurrahman alternately preceding 'Hussain'. The Antwerp reviews I've read say he's impressive, he's classified as a midfielder, and for ONE match report it mentioned him playing on the wing.

Souleymane Mamam (1987) has become an Antwerp starting line-up regular.

David Fox (1983) is DMC, and if your previous post about Sbragia's reserve team line-up is correct, then he can even play DC.

Kyle Moran is a striker, if Irish papers are to be believed.

I would also call a chill on the expectations (re:McShane, Spector, Cooper, Steele, Bardsley et al) . Lots of players look good in the youth team, but extremely few make it. Our 1973-1975 (players born in those years) generation was a one-off.

-I knew this kind of a question would arise, but the answer is no. My so-called knowledge is gathered, as mentioned, from internet and on a rare occasion watching a game including some of ´em boys on telly or irl.

-Evidence is extremely limited indeed, but since we´ve made these arrangements (the future loan deal) it would be weird if there is no talent in him afterall...

There were a few threads about Brandy a few years back when he was a 12 year old .I think that's when the Maradona comparison came about. Haven't heard much about him since. He must be about 15 now.

Thanks mate! Let´s see wheather our youth experts (GaryLifo, Neil Thomson, MPTutd, MUTV viewers, etc.) are going to give us some more information. And BTW Raoul, as a mod, do you have any news on that 02-03 youth thread?

Thanks Jacuzzi for your posts, makes for excellent reading, looking foward to you givning us more info on our youth players
