Found this on Michael Barnes:

The new Ryan Giggs?
Cardinal Newman College student Michael Barnes has been invited for a trial at Manchester United!

The talented student who came to Newman from Southlands High School in Chorley plays on the wing for Newman’s Centre of Excellence. He also plays for the Lancashire under 19 team, as well as playing for Lancaster City first team and their Youth team. It was whilst playing for the Youth team in the FA youth cup that he was spotted by a scout from Manchester United. Michael was invited to visit the Manchester club’s training ground last week, and at the end of that was invited to attend for a full week of training with the teams that play for Manchester United – with the possibility of being asked to carry on for a further 5 weeks, and the possibility of a contract at the end of that time.

Newman’s football Centre of Excellence is used to success. As well as being supported by the Football Association (the only college in the area to have such support), Newman have been National Champions twice over the past 5 years – hardly surprising that their coach (Sean Haselgrove) has just been invited to be the coach for the British College’s under 19 team – due to play in Italy next year!

You can also find out a bit on him here:

Still curious about his age though.

Beat me to it Anders.....not sure on his age........but you can't play in the FA Youth Cup if you re over 18 as of July 1 2005......so therefore he is still 17 or has turned 18 since July..........he is obviously cup-tied for United games..

"Football was cancelled due to the weather, but 3 of our students are through to the next stage of the England SCHOOLS TRIALS – Alex Butler, MICHAEL BARNES and Darren Green"

England School trials indicates that he is 14 or 15......thus why he can't be put on a contract......also if United do sign him.....he will be eligble for Youth duty next year......Also college probably indicates 5th or 6th form...

Kind of impressive to be 15 years old and score a hattrick on U18 level.

Looking at it......I'd say he is 16.......and because of when his birthday falls....is eligible for England Schools...

He played 4 FA Youth Cup ties for Lancaster City.....scored twice vs Woodley Sports (2-1), then played against Selby Town and Formby Town before Lancaster lost on pens at Morecambe.....

This is a similar story to Sean Evans who played for Shrewsbury Town before joining United...

tony; how good is this fagan bloke? and what type of player is he? is he the only player born after 1990 that is a regular feature (albeit mostly a late sub) for the u18s?

He hasn't overly impressed me so far........he lacks a little pace.....although as you say he hasn't had a decent run.....he played very well on Saturday scoring two and setting up Danny Rose very unselfishly for the last goal....

He is a little small but still may be adapting to English football after playing in Ireland for Home Farm.....

Will find out more info and post when I can....

Newcastle Town- United res: 0-4.
Does anyone have more info?

Team: Zieler, Lee, Lea, Cathcart, J. Evans, Gibson, Gray, Hewson, Campbell, S. Evans, Rose Subs: Mullan (2), Amos (1), Burns (9), Fagan, C. Evans (11), Barnes (10), Chester (7)......

Campbell scored a hat-trick and Gibson netted a penalty.....an all round good performance....

This was a chance to look at the Youth team to decide on the squad for the tie at Birmingham City on the 15th of December...

Was this a U18 match?

I know this must be a difficult question Tony, but how is the youths at our akademy compared to a couple of seasons ago when we all were hoping for Timm, Eagles etc.

Back then I had MUTV, and I am still wondering why David Jones and Timm is not playing in the PL today.

I think the kids coming through are better and stronger....but it's harrd to tell...Mads Timm has all teh ability in the world....but his attitude is terrible....that's why he won't make it....

David Jones is a brilliant prospect and i don't why Fergie won't give him a chance....he is playing out of his skin at Preston......so maybe he will be recalled in the january window.......

Finally, Paul McShane picked up an injury at Brighton which will keep him out for 2 months...subsequently....he has returned to Carrington for treatment and his loan has finished early as he was going to be recalled in January anyway....

NEWCASTLE T 0, MAN UTD 4

12:00 - 25 November 2005
George Best graced the Lyme Valley Stadium 14 years ago to mark the installation of new floodlights at Newcastle Town, and last night the future stars of Manchester United did the same.

The Northern Ireland superstar was part of a Castle side to take on Stoke City in 1991 and it was apt that, as he continued to fight for his life, the fledgling Red Devils shone for the official opening of the upgraded floodlights. In an entertaining game in front of 517 fans who braved the harsh cold weather, the Manchester United XI came away with a 4-0 win, with hot prospect Frazer Campbell bagging a hat-trick.

It took the 18-year-old just 15 minutes to open the scoring as he latched on to Darren Gibson's cross and, as the Newcastle defence appealed for offside, he slotted home.

The United side were always dangerous going forward and James Jowsey did well to make fine saves from Campbell, Gibson and Craig Cathcart within the next 10 minutes.

Newcastle were solid in defence, although they failed to pose any real threat up front and United should have doubled their lead just before the break when Campbell put his free header over from just outside the six-yard box.

With Saturday's North West Counties Division One clash against Formby firmly in his mind, Town manager Nigel Gleghorn brought on a whole new side for the second half and they started brightly.

Paul Kiely had a fierce left-foot shot sail narrowly over the bar in the opening minutes and, moments later, could not rise high enough to head home Darren Johnson's cross when unmarked at the back post.

Just after the hour mark, United went two goals up when Gibson slotted home a penalty after Campbell had been pulled back by John Diskin.

Five minutes later and United had extended their lead when Campbell raced on to Michael Lee's long pass and lofted the ball over the advancing Richard Froggatt.

Froggatt was called into action on numerous occasions and pulled off a fine save from Lee and then tipped Jamie Mullan's inswinging kick on to the bar.

Newcastle appeared to have cleared the danger, but a crossfield ball from Lee again found Campbell and he dispatched a clinical shot from the edge of the area to seal his hat-trick and an impressive display.

United started to take control and Corry Evans's jinking run through the heart of the defence set up Aaron Burns, whose shot was well saved by Froggatt and then the keeper reacted well to deny Michael Barnes from the follow-up.

In the 82nd minute, Castle almost scored a consolation when Johnson showed good skill in the box to find Kiely, but the striker's effort was cleared off the line by James Chester.

Barnes could and should have wrapped up the win two minutes later, but he skied his shot from just two yards out.

Gleghorn was pleased with the way Newcastle had played and hoped his players could pick up some things from the young United side.

He said: "In the first half, I thought we played well and didn't look like conceding many and after the break, with the changes, we tried to attack more and that opened the game up and they took advantage.

"This has been a positive experience for our players and if they have learned one or two things from this game then that is better still.

"I brought on a reserve side in the second half with some young players and they did well, so the more senior players might need to be looking over the shoulders in the coming weeks.

"Manchester United did not come here to take the mickey and it was a good evening of football that everyone enjoyed, I know our players did.

"I would like to thank United for making the effort."

NEWCASTLE TOWN First half: Jowsey, Gillick, Duckworth, Beeston, Haddrell, Ridley, Teague, Wilkes, Depeiaza, Lennon, Talbot. Second half: Froggatt, Swift, Rigsby, Mills, Diskin, Johnson, Taaffe, Hughes, Kiely, Bott, Burke. Subs: Lurosso (Swift, 78), Davies (Hughes, 78).

MANCHESTER UNITED XI: Zieler, K Lee, M Lee, Cathcart, J Evans, Gibson, Gray, Hewson, Campbell, S Evans, Rose. Subs: Amos (Zieler 75), Mullan (K Lee, 70), Burns (Campbell, 75), Fagan, Barnes (S Evans, 64), Chester (Gray, 75).

David Jones has been playing great for Preston, and impressed again yesterday. Rumour has it that he were on of the best players on the pitch. He just became 21 years old, so it is a bit soon to give him up, ey?

We have seen players impressing before in the CCC collapsing in the PL, but we have also seen the opposite (for example Cahill). Can we bring him home in January? Could he possibly be any worse than Scholes have been lately? Would like to add that Joey Barton reached 21 years old before he started playing regular at City so it is not to late for him.

i don't think too many of us have given up on him. he is making great progress at preston, and should only be brought back if saf intends to make him a regular first-team feature. can't do much worse than scholes and fletch

Hm, our jrns. played against Stoke today, anyone saw the match?

Tony, hope you havent left us mate?

since tony seems to be MIA at the moment, here's my two cents;
kenny cooper will never make it at united, but he might do a good job for a mid-table/bottom-half premiership team. his size and strenght could be valuable for the kinda clubs who lay back with 10 men away from home. like liverpool.

Kenny also have some neat skills, a centre forward at that size, his footwork is indeed a great bonus.
