Yerry Mina - Everton Player

Your right I now think Alderwiereld is a better fit even if he's dearer.
Seeing as Bailly and Lindelof have both failed to cement a place ahead of Jones and Smalling, it makes no sense to buy yet another unfinished product in Mina. Get Alderweireld in and it solves the immediate problem of lack of quality while also buying time for the younger CBs to either shape up or be shipped out.

A guy outperformed by Spurs new young CB Sanchez last season? Hardly a convincing choice. I think he is better than Bailly and Jones at this point, not sure about Lindelof. But the argument you put forward would be a lot stronger if we were talking about a player who wasn't bettered by the youngster last season. No guarantee he would fare any better this season.

Really? Alderweireld didn’t play because of injury and then stubbornness of the manager.
They wanted him to sign a new contract. Sanchez and the spurs defence wasn’t all that last season.
Short memories of a class player in Alderweireld.

He played though. Just wasnt as good as Sanchez.

And just to point it out because people point it out with players we have, Lindelof, Bailly and even Dailly Blind won more headers when they played last season than Toby did in his games. I sometimes see comments about Lindelof, Bailly and especially Blind not being good enough in the air to play CB for us but they all won it more often than Toby did who averaged 1 per match.

We're after an experienced, reliable centreback that will automatically be first choice when fit. CBs that are available and fit that profile are in short supply this late in the transfer window. If we pass on Toby I'd rather we go ahead with what we've got rather than sign someone like Mina for the sake of it.

Well he wouldnt be for the sake of it, if we decide to pay what is a significant fee for a young CB. We'll only do that because we believe he adds some things to improve our defense. And even as an outsider its clear to me what some of those things are as our weakness defensively last season was set pieces. So bringing in another player strong in the air like Smalling makes perfect sense. Especially for games where Smalling might be rested or unavailable.

How does Mina improve our defence, genuinely asking?

Anyone have the stats on how many headed goals we conceded last season?

Did you see all the goals we conceded from corners? We didnt concede many from open play. Mina is huge and probably the best player in the air in the World Cup

Great, the best player in the air in 3 matches. That's some credentials to base your season on.

Well it beats being the worst of the players we're linked to in the air, having won less headers last season than all of our CBs including Blind.

Adding that to a team that already concedes way more goals to set pieces than it should, given we're a team of giants doesn't sound logical.

So it sounds logical to buy a defender who has played 8 games or so in Europe and our delivery from the back to be as shite as it was last year, adding another defender slow on the turn with little to no experience and also having a midget mentality from what we've seen so far at Barca and the way he wants to fight for his place?

He adds some disadvantages as well. He's reportedly not the best passer, which will further hinder our build up from the back if he's going to be paired with Smalling most of the time. Valencia and Young aren't exactly Alves and Marcelo either, which means that either Matic or Pogba will end up dropping really deep to get us playing. Mourinho obviously saw this as a problem worth fixing, for that was his stated rationale for signing Lindelof. Now that it's clear that Lindelof has some rough edges, the apparent fix is to sign yet another rough diamond, who has his own weaknesses and isn't guaranteed to be first choice anyway.

We needed pace at centreback, so we signed Bailly. Bailly wasn't the best passer, so we signed Lindelof. Lindelof wasn't the best aerially, so we got Mina. Mina wasn't the best __________, so we got __________.
Nah. Get the finished article or polish the rough diamonds we already have, IMO.

It’s why we signed Fred, to transition faster and leaving Pogba further up

I honestly can't remember corners where our defenders were all that culpable - am sure there were a couple. More so I remember players like Lukaku and Pogba who are generally very good in the air but, for some reason very suspect last year on set pieces. To me it would be a bonus if yeah the defender is a monster in the air but, right now more than anything, we need a player that will be automatic starter and getting us to a settled back line. Mina I think would end up just like Bailly, Lindeloff where they get bit of chance but, if not instant rock, then will be rotated in and out.

Having Fred is a huge help, but a top team ought to expect its centrebacks to participate more actively in the buildup phase. Guardiola demands it and his team conceded the fewest goals in the league last season.

He's a better dribbler than most of our CBs and better passer than any other than perhaps Lindelof. Matic will drop deep regardless of who is in defense so it doesnt matter if we have Pirlo back there.

Smalling has pace. More than Bailly.

what? smalling is a snail

Did you?

We conceded 17 from open play and 10 from set pieces* in the league last season.

In comparison, Liverpool conceded 8, Spurs conceded 10, Chelsea conceded 6, City conceded 3, Arsenal conceded 7

It is something that can be improved, but is not a glaring weakness.

*note: some of these might include direct free kicks scored against

If he was bought for 10M, played 3 games, why did his price quadruple? Makes no sense

Maybe he is talking about trails that Smalling leaves behind him?

Because prices for CBs have seemingly ballooned with teams expecting £60 million+ for the likes of Toby and Maguire. So in that market his price is a lot closer to theirs

Based on?

Maguire is Leicester player of the year, Toby has been around forever, 3 games and your price jumps with 35m EUR? Makes absolutely no sense. Especially considering he'll play about zero games if he stays at Barca.

Damn what about Rojo. Can’t Everton take him too.
Now that Everton invested in Mina I doubt it. IMO Darmian is the only player who is going to be sold before the transfer window closes.

Based on all fees for CBs being more than double they would have been last year

Barca got very lucky, clearly he doesn’t have the mentality to play at a big club, and they want rid - he scores some goals at the WC and a PL club throw £30m at him. They must be laughing their socks off, treble their money in 6 months on a player they don’t even want!

Genuine question, have you ever watched Smalling play?
Are you a watcher of games, or just hang about in the forums moaning?
well, I've only been watching since about 1968. smalling is a liability for one major reason: he can't defend, but yes he is slow too
