The Yerry Mina to Manchester United transfer could happen today,

The Reds have reportedly put in a £35m bid for the 23-year-old Colombian after failing to land both Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire.

They have apparently demanded Barcelona make a decision today if they want to sell the defender or not.

I think you'll find most United supporters see Smalling as championship defender but you go on living in your dreamland with your pink unicorns

Smalling is significantly faster than any of our centrebacks other than maybe Bailly (and Smalling is probably faster than him too). Indeed, he's one of the fastest central defenders in the league. Because of his sheer size he doesn't have the explosive acceleration off the mark that Bailly has and he can take a couple of steps to really get going if he's turned, but he's fast enough that 90% of the time he quickly makes that back up.

you're joking right? I suppose this genius played in all england's games at the WC and is about to move to barca for £100m. He is a liability and has a mistake in him. And you contradict yourself: he is indeed slow of the mark and slow to get going, as you day. to me that means slow! it's what I am saying...

and in the second there he just stays with his man over a very short distance when the attacker has little space to run into : sort of what he's paid to do. I am talking in a real chase. If those are the best you can find...

I withdraw my comments. Smalling is clearly the best (and fastest) centre back we have ever had. Yes, he outshines Staam, Rio, Pally, Stevie Bruce, Martin Buchan, Gordon McQueen, Ronnie Johnsen and Henning berg. In fact, he is the reincarnation of Duncan Edwards

look again. people have said he has been our best (I presume they mean) outfield player for the past 2-3 seasons. maybe you shouldn't post if you don't read what's gone before

or maybe I watch without the red-tinted spectacles. he is among the poorest central defenders we've had at the club and I love the way when one attck of yours is proved wrong you try to move to another

More to the point though, do you think Smalling is good enough to be part of a title challenging squad? I think he is. Same probably goes for Bailly and Lindelof too. Since we have the bare minimum in other positions too and are okay with it, I can't understand why CB is a big priority.

Our 'style' over the years has been an out ball to the right flank. That is where we should (or should've) invested. A ball playing defender won't solve our problems of beating sides that sit back against us even if he is at Maldini's level. We need runners in behind and players who are willing to make more than one run per attack if they are not found on the first one (Lukaku).

What has that got to do with anything? We were talking about his speed. :confused:

While on the topic of his quality though, why can't it be somewhere in the middle? He certainly hasn't become the absolute beast that I was hoping he would when he was younger and it's debatable whether he's good enough, but ultimately he has been our best central defender over the last four years. That may be more of an indictment on how bad all our other options have been over that time period, but until somebody actually steps up and takes that spot from him it will continue being the case. Rather than blaming him for that, blame the other options who haven't stepped up. Jones, Bailly, Rojo and Lindelof all make more mistakes than him, while also (other than Lindelof so far) being massively injury-prone.

There's a huge difference between 'being a snail' like you claimed, and being slightly slow in the first two steps but then accelerating to one of the fastest players in the club.

Going by your logic, albeit taking it to the extremes, Usain Bolt is slow. He always had to compete against people who were faster than him over the first couple of steps, but his top speed was obviously much higher. Smalling is similar when compared to the people he is competing against.

The fact that pretty much everybody who has replied to you, including quite a few who don't even like Smalling, have said that you are ridiculously wrong in regards to his speed should give you pause.

I dont think you know how defending works. He cant just sprint back as a footrace when he doesnt know which way the opponent will go. So he's jogging until he knows which direction his opponent goes, while his opponent knows and can start sprinting as soon as he pushes the ball that way. Smalling has to react to the direction change and then start sprinting to recover and he does.

Smalling is quite clearly very fast whether you like it or not. Shite on the ball yes, but quick.

I honestly don't think Smalling should be a starter for us. OK as a back-up. I prefer Bailly and would give Lindelof a run (I'd do same with Shaw/Darmain too but that's just me. Both play for their countries which Smalling does not (or didn't at WC). But I agree we should not be focusing on CB. we need width. we ned a top-class winger, maybe two. It's been our platform for success in the past...

Yawn. Willian has killed many CBs in similar situations. Vardy himself said Smalling is the toughest CB he's faced, the one that never let's you get an inch. There's another example of Smalling outpacing Welbeck and making a great tackle stopping a 1v1 situation. Enjoy your agenda old man

You're really struggling here. He's probably the best centre back at the club now, that doesn't mean he's at the level of those players. He's also obviously not slow if you actually watched him play football.
 
Smalling is quick over a decent length sprint but over short distances he is not. He is slow to react which causes him to be slower off the block. It is a more important trait for a defender to be able to identify danger and act quickly. Him being able to outrun attackers over longer distances is a good quality but one which is required far less often.

Rio used to have that burst of pace, very fast across short distances. Almost like Henry.

If he didn’t have a 10 yard head start he would be slated for poor positioning. He’s certainly not the best defender we have but you can only piss with the c*#k you’ve got. I rate Bailey and Lindelof to improve and become a great partnership.

I think we should be after Toby rather than Mina for his ball palting abilities and the fact he’s miles better. The distribution from our defence at present is poor and predictable and we need something different to kickstart attack’s.

But perhaps you should read that nobody said you said he wasnt faster than all the players you listed.

But Smalling is probably faster than any of the players you mentioned so I said so.
 
Thank goodness. I don’t think we were ever in for him.

His agent has done his job, drummed up interest, using us, and got him a move to the PL.
 
Another useless window for United. Players again using us to get better deals, Godan at Madrid did and some not interested because of Jose.

I’d love to know what Woodward’s view of it all is.
 
Lol 30 million euros and a buy back option for a player they paid 9 mill a few months ago.. Barca couldn't have dreamt of a better deal.
OK maybe 30 mill is acceptable, but that plus a buy back clause?
The PL clubs are so dumb, it's unbelievable
