WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

I'm never a fan of that as a reason either, not being able to control yourself because you're angry or frustrated is fundamental character flaw.
I think it's a flaw most top players have, but learn to control.

Beckham’s petulant ‘tap’ was nothing compared to what James did

What James did was more like Zidane's deliberate stamp on the Saudi player in the second group match in 1998. Zidane got off the hook because France won the following 2 matches before he contributed in the remaining 3 matches on the way to the big prize.

Weirdly enough, players have been getting away with kicking out at opponents in the Premier League in recent years. It’s usually just a booking.

It’s good to see reds given for that again.
That's a clear red. Any form of little stamp is a red. Keane did a similar one vs Porto. Players are never getting away with that.

It happens rarely to me and I've never done anything seriously harmful, on or off the pitch, when in anger but I'm always shocked after the fact at how it felt like I had no control and didn't even make a conscious decision. If I knew it was coming and could recognize it I would count to 10 and focus on my breath and it would be fine but there's no indication to me that I should do that, just a second of mist and normally a yellow card (I'm not dirty/malicious enough to warrant reds and I can't imagine say stomping on someone when the ball isn't there, but I've definitely gone into 25/75 challenges due to a red mist).

Oshoala looks about as mobile as a turtle for Nigeria. Why bring her on when she barely makes any movement on the pitch?

Nigeria should attack now, but they seem to stick to the plan just sitting back.

It is a clear red, I agree. But players do get away with kick outs almost every week in the Premier League and have done for a good few seasons now.

Plan seems to be to whack the ball at her via cross or for a layoff like an aging Henrik Larsson. Does she score a lot of headers?

If Oshoala is so diminished by that injury, I see no point in bringing her on unless the match situation becomes a serious emergency.

James needs to pray England somehow get through

Hard thirty minutes ahead. Nigeria still doing most of the attacking. England might be looking for a setpiece to get out of this.

Think England will be very fortunate to get through this game. Underwhelming is putting it nicely.

Ref should have reviewed that situation, why did VAR not tell her to look even? Bizarre.

For sure. I fear that levels of vitriol aimed at a single player would be unprecedented should England end up losing this match, mostly because of the hordes of racists and misogynists on social media.

Feels like this WC was never meant to be for England. The players dropping with injuries before, some underwhelming performances but you can think that maybe they're growing into the tournament. Walsh goes down and looks like its over for her, but then comes back and now this game where almost anything that can go wrong has gone wrong.

Actually, I'm going to say that it won't be that bad. The majority of the vitriol that black male players receive is from a hardcore of idiots who almost certainly have no interest in women's football. There's also a culture around women's football that is much more open to praise and hesitant to criticize. I also cannot see a newspaper doing what they did to Beckham.

Listening on Talksport and they all thought it was a penalty.

It was but also a backpost defender barging through someone who's probably not even going to head the ball seems so harsh, since you're basically supposed to do it, just lighter than Bronze did it.

The sport clearly needs a Yellow Penalty (something that goes in like 30-40% of the time, so like a shot from the top of the box no wall?) and a Red Penalty (current penalty, 80% or whatever)

Wiegman is having a Southgate here

Red card, into extra time and you've only made 1 sub :wenger:

It was a definite penalty. Completely irrelevant whether the Nigerian was going to head the ball or not. Just very clumsy. No need for a "Yellow Penalty".

She's injured but Nigeria as a whole have gone off the boil since the red card. Need to find one last push here because England are cruising to penalties here.
