WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

If thats a penalty then we should have 10-15 penalties every game from infractions from defenders on corners and set pieces. Thats the problem. It was an obvious error since you dont give penalties for such small fouls.

Major props to the ref for changing her own decision.

Again whether that’s a penalty or not is a completely different debate to whether that should have been overturned. Once that penalty is given and the video shows contact then the VAR should have no role in it. By getting involved they are creating an obvious biased situation in the refs mind

If the ref cant review a situation neutrally without being "biased" by the VAR asking her to review it, then its time to leave the job. If she still thought it was a penalty she would have kept the decision. There will never be any VAR review that unbiased since the ref knows the VAR room has seen something she potentially missed in real time.

You could argue the ref blew the whistle for that penalty since she knew she would be corrected if she was wrong by VAR.

In general I would like to see less penalties given unless its blatant infractions, I just hate when a nothing situation decides a game from nowhere. Like a player moving out from the penalty are and being fouled when there is no danger of scoring even. I just think its pointless.

Btw, why is everyone so harsh on USA?

They played the 3rd ranked team in the world (Sweden) off the field for 60 minutes and should have won the game with 2-0 or 3-0 had they had normal results from their chances.

People said Japan, Spain, England and France would destroy USA.

What do you think will happen to Sweden then, who were destroyed by USA?

It should mean sweden will be losing 5-0 vs Japan, which will not happen.

Sweden was praised before the game as gold contenders by the same people that are slagging USA off - and still do it despite USA dominating Sweden. It makes little sense.

My conclusion is that the outcry against USA is overblown.

That’s all good but how many situations can you actually remember when a ref has been called to a screen and hasn’t changed his/her mind. In my opinion there was nothing on the video that said this is a obvious mistake. The ref is 5 yards away with a clear view and so she shouldn’t be changing the decision she made

Why isn't Toone starting for England?

From what I've seen of the England team this world cup, she has been the spark making things happen.
She got dropped as part of the formation change - she hasn't really being playing well enough to get a start. I would think we'll see her as a sub though, maybe sooner than later.

These teams have a plan to win by attacking, which I can appreciate after seeing my sweden park the bus yesterday :-)

Nigeria might rue all these missed opportunities. They've been the much better team.

Almost the same thing as South Africa yesterday except the fact that, unlike the Netherlands, England have been firing blanks instead of making shots count.

Injured. They're trying to ration her minutes.

Gotcha.

Looks to Nigeria is now content sitting back and not concede. Some of their D-man looks knackered. Russo running like a horse still!

Game over Nigeria I would say.

I predict England to score from a stupid turnover from Nigeria defender.

England getting more chances now, but Nigeria still going forward fast. Open match.

Some of the passing from England has been awful, especially in our own half. Just too slow. It's not been a good performance.

Why is not Toone on at this moment? Surely she would be better than a tired James? Still extra time to go of course.

Yeah, really lethargic display. Hopes that the China performance had shaken off the earlier tournament showings seemingly dispelled.

Lauren James has been very quiet in this game.

She's been marked/shadowed most of the game, but the movement around her has been poor. England's movement today has been disappointing. It seems more like a friendly or a third group game than a last 16 knockout game.

That should be a red card.

Dunno why Wiegman is leaving it so late to make a sub. Some of our players look knackered and some have been poor throughout.
