WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Daly in with a chance there. Shot goes straight at the keeper, but more signs of life from England now

I still don’t understand how the ref can overturn that penalty. VAR shouldn’t be re reffing the game

My favorite team being Japan, I love their kind of silent approach as they fight to boost the game in Japan and even abroad. What they do on the pitch is the kind of artistry I can rally behind. They have been an example to follow since 2011, not just as athletes but also as people.

In my experience watching men's, women's football and playing at a passable amateur/sunday league level in one of the most diverse cities in the world, the Japanese approach to football should be copied by a ton of countries and exported. They don't have the best players in the world, but their football is so pleasing that it feels like that's more a result of just lacking real size at CB and world class strikers. But when I've been the one white guy in a weekly Japanese pickup game it's my favorite nation of players to play with along with the Spanish, whose football (which I guess is pretty built on Dutch shit to be fair) is correctly rated and being exported a ton of places.

The 2011 Women's World Cup Final between the U.S and Japan was a comical mismatch from a pace and strength perspective, like watching an under-16 team against an under-21 team in the Men's game, but their passing and movement was miles beyond, and that's the part of football you can teach.

England’s defence at sixes and sevens, once again. For the umpteenth time this tournament I ask, how the feck was MLT not good enough to even be in this squad??

Yeah doesn't really fall within the 'clear and obvious' remit we're used to in the PL.
Yeah, it probably was an overstep to what we're used to seeing in the PL but I do think it was the right call. If Nigeria lost 1-0 due to that penalty, if I was a Nigeria fan I'd be fuming.

Yeah I agree the penalty would have been incredibly soft, but still falls in that category of 'seen them given'.

Glad they overturned it though.

No way that pen call being overturned was a clear an obvious error. That's bullshit.

Nigeria using width in all areas of the pitch to make space and spread the game. England on the few times they have switched play have looked dangerous.

I thought that England looked more cohesive as a team with Katie Zelem in the midfield.

They look disjointed today, and the pressing is making it worse.

To overturn obvious mistakes. No way is that an obvious error

If thats a penalty then we should have 10-15 penalties every game from infractions from defenders on corners and set pieces. Thats the problem. It was an obvious error since you dont give penalties for such small fouls.

Major props to the ref for changing her own decision.

Did Chelsea use Lauren James year one to build her up physically? At United she could not play full 90 minutes and also got injured all the time.

What does switching the play mean? I have watched Premier league for 25 years but I still dont know that, haha.
It means cross field passes to the opposite flank, it opens up space and means the defenssive team have to transition across the pitch to defend and makes them more vulnerable because of the increased space between defenders. England have done it 3 times and each time caused Nigeria problems

Why isn't Toone starting for England?

From what I've seen of the England team this world cup, she has been the spark making things happen.

Thanks. I know what doing that entails, but I did not know it was called "switching the play" in english terms. :-)

Good half that. Entertaining stuff, a proper match. Very hard for players like James to get away from their markers. Nigeria the better team for most of the half.

Where can I see which if any players are 1 booking away from being suspended in the quarterfinals? (ideally without manually going through all games to see which players have been booked)
