WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Diani rams in the penalty, which was given because of a hand ball.

France lead 3-1 and no way back now for Panama.

Ouch! Le Garrec adds another one with a long looping ball that missed everybody except the twine, just before halftime.

4-1.

It feels like we are seeing a lot of hand ball penalties this WC
The combination of VAR and the current interpretation of the rule makes it inevitable. Plus it's the first time with VAR for some of these teams, so they've got a learning curve to follow.

France making sure now after that first minute blip.

Brazil still doing all the attacking and getting plenty of chances but I can't say they're goalless because the keeper is pulling off freakishly good saves or something - it's just solid defending. Brazil still have work to do.

England have Nigeria in the last 16 and if things go by the book would likely be Germany in QF, France in SF and USA in final? Hell of a run.

Another penalty for France.

I swear that referees need to practice the way they expose their decisions through the microphone though.

edit: Diani with the hatty.

There are going to be some tasty matches in the knockouts. It's hard to visualise the USA making it to the final - but they're such a great tournament team you can't rule them out. So far though, it's hard to pick a solid favourite.

I think with Walsh, Williamson and Mead fit England would have separated themselves from the pack.

Pre tournament I was all in on USA but now I am going to look out for Sweden odds against them. I think Sweden are going to beat them

Talking to the crowd is such a new thing for football. I can't help but think a world cup with lots of refs having to speak English as a second language is a tough trial.

That is a very likely outcome. Missing Lavelle will be a huge hit and the offense just doesn't seem to have that threat that they have had in years past.

Panama celebrating that penalty goal as if they won it all while they are in fact getting battered. Just WTH, man?

Are Brazil gonna grab a goal or do they look out of ideas now?

They're not creating anything so far. They look out of ideas. Jamaica look very solid and well drilled in their roles. If Brazil do score, you get feeling it will be from a corner.

Or like there, from what would have been a freak own goal

Marta subbed off with 2 other players. Is this the last time that she ever plays on this stage? Brazil have less than 10 minutes plus stoppages left to play.

Would have been so unfair.

We're well into heartbreaker territory now. Some tired legs out there. Jamaica's biggest enemy at the moment is their own tiredness. Hope they can hang on.

Now I would not be happy at all if I'm Hervé Renard. First, that looked offside to me. Second, conceding 2 consecutive goals is poor mindset ahead of the game that matters next.

Jamaica could use Spence more efficiently I think. Very calm and efficient on the ball compared to her teammates.

Goalmouth scramble. Heart in mouth for Jamaica

Exhausting to watch even as a neutral.

0-0

Brazil go out.
Jamaica go through.

Wow

Brazil looked like they could be contenders after thrashing Panama. Only goes to show, once again, that you shouldn’t read too much into early results in tournaments.

Les Bleues will have the last word after all with a 6th goal. And it's from the 19-year-old rookie Vicki Bècho.

It's a massive achievement for a tiny country like Panama to even to be at the WC, so they should rightly celebrate anything they can while they are there

Well done to Jamaica, very defensive but it's only the qualification that matters - I think they are the smallest country here at 3 million population

For the most part the way the VAR has been working has been really good.

Sad way to go out but what a giant she’s been for women’s football.

It feels like the end of an era. Not the ending that she might have dreamed of, but she's seen and been part of so much that has changed in the women's game.

From the end of today's match:

Absolutely magnificent result.

Wasn't awake for the first half but woke up in time to watch the second. Was so tense near the end.

Love it.
