WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

That sounded like "feck the tommies" from my position. Anyway, not much to say about a drunk man's rambling.

Translation for our foreign Caftards:
'feck The Tories'
as in the Conservative Party, our shitty government

The USA have messed up the TV schedule by coming in as runners up in their group. FIFA had scheduled their expected route through R16/QF to kick-off in US prime time. Which is unfortunate for Netherlands fans whose team now have middle of the night slots (European time).

Could be good news for Sweden fans though. If they top their group they'll play the US at 11am (CET) on Sunday. The US fans will have to get up early.

Thats hilarious. And those USA fans better get sleep in before the game cause they will be sleepless for few nights after TEAM SWE demolished them ;)

Beautifully hit - more or less the same goal in each half, impressive. I'm reading she's on the move, any idea who she's linked with?

Another link to the goals:

For the UK viewers at least.

Will Glazers OPEN their wallets as a goodbye gift? Esmee Brugts would be an upgrade on Russo. I dont give a feck how she costs, its peanuts to the Glazers! All other clubs are investing in proper players. We cant settle for a a 32 year old colombia with zero merits in european football that might be cheap (no offense to her) We need world class quality players to replace Ona & Russo.

I think I am going to have an angry outburst soon enough if we dont recruit QUALITY to replace QUALITY!

Italy leading 1-0 from a penalty and will go through if they win this match.

That South African player just booting the ball out for a throw in because she didn't get a free-kick

Wild goal for SA.

Wind blows the ball away as player goes to take a corner. Wild!

As things stand Italy go through but with Sweden still drawing 0-0 with Argentina at HT nothing in this group is settled (apart from Sweden qualifying of course).

The own goal for Italy was one of those bizarre moments that you wonder how much it's going to affect the player afterwards. Hopefully it'll just remind her to look next time

Over the years the quality of women's football has improved massively but you wouldn't believe that if SA- Italy was the first match you saw in a decade.

Secondhalf has just been scruffy, scruffy, scruffy until that lovely SA goal. First half I'd blamed on the weather and Italian nerves (+ the odd WTF moment)

Italy need to do better now or they're out.

Italy score from the corner and it's Italy who'll go through if it stays at 2-2

VAR looking for offside on the goal. International video feed really annoying when they do this thing where they don't show replays.

Goal stands 2-2

The Benny Hill theme playing in the background would be fitting from time to time. Especially with that chance Italy just had.

11 minutes added time in Italy v SA - more or less entirely for VAR

16 minutes of added time and SA win 3-2

SA qualify for the knockouts.

Would have been devastating for SA to not get through having been ahead in all their games, glad they made it!

Really entertaining game, building up nicely now it's getting to in effect the knockout games.

Feel sorry for the Italian defender but SA certainly bring some colour to the tournament.

Anybody know what the SA goal celebration is all about?

Sweden v USA in the R16
South Africa v Netherlands

Huge for SA, that's their first ever win at a WWC and it gets them the runner-up spot in the group.

Disappointing for Italy but despite that 5-0 hammering they took from Sweden they could have saved themselves today and didn't.

By the way, I know it's crass to mention money in the context of a piece of history for the women's game in SA but...

Getting through the group stage boosts the FIFA payment to each player from $30k to $60k

For most players at the tournament that'll be more than they earn from football in a year. For a team like SA it's a huge deal.

Incidentally the reason it's paid directly to the players is because many of the FAs can't be trusted to pass the money on. Each FA also get at least $1.5m for qualifying for the tournament.

That "as it stands" table is glorious. Currently Jamaica top the group and France go out - now that would be a shock!

What a bloody goal that Panama strike was

Panama 1-1 France.

They might call this an own goal against Salazar, but Lakrar's header was on target.

edit: confirmed as Lakrar's goal.

Diani picks up a stray rebound, shows patience, and swivels for a shot that goes off the crossbar and in.

Panama 1-2 France.

Diani showing her experience there to get that one. She knew there was still a chance.

Penalty.

I was just about to say this will end up being a huge scoreline for France I think. One way traffic all game.
