WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Should have been her hattrick. They stole that 2nd goal from her for no reason.

What a finish is that, fair play. Knock the wind back out of their sails quickly.

What if United could have a player like James, good lord! Its like a cheat code right now  :nono:

Solid reason for why Chelsea are so good, but they've had a chunk more time than us and we're doing great things - bit more time and we'll be briliant.

I'm still more salty about losing Russo :D

Starters get a rest, Bronze gets protected from a second yellow - subs get 20 minutes +

Coombs not really taking her chance so far having come for Stanway at halftime

What if we could have a team with James, Batlle and Russo! :wenger:
Throw Groenen and Greenwood in and we've seen some good players in our short existence.

Toone coming on for Lauren James.

All England fans will feel some relief today about the attack after the small 1-0 wins in the previous 2 matches.

I'm pleased for Zelem, she's slotted well into this formation - giving the centre backs the out ball when they need it and keeping it circulating.

Seriously, I wished Portugal scored that late goal instead of hitting the post because that would have sent a strong message across North America (Canada and USA alike) that the American model is just not viable anymore in this age of emergence in women's football for so many countries.

what do you mean by 'American model' ?

For a long time, the US built a team to defeat opponents through speed, fitness, and experience. In short, it was about brute force at the expense of more technical skills; that's how the NCAA developed those players for years. It may have worked for a while as women's football was not as technically developed as it is now, but that approach is bound to hit a wall as other countries are improving with different approaches that emphasize work on technical skills.

With Europe and now Japan offering opportunities for players to play like full-time professionals with serious backing from men's football clubs, this is where you begin to see the difference in skills and discpline between the (North) American approach and the European-Japanese approach.

Well, we always get americans coming here to say that the NWSL women teams would toy with and soundly beat Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City women easily if they ever met! So perhaps there is some arrogance in USA that could come back to bite them?

Likewise in canada, canadians think if they start a league for example a team in Montreal could instantly compete with Barcelona and Bayern Munich in terms of reputation and history. The people I see said: "Why would people to and play in Barcelona if you could play in Canada?" Its a bit odd and naive to think that.

Nice to see England racking up the goals at last. James has been a revelation to the team and what a volley.

USA look beatable.

Even if Canada gets a new league, it sure does not solve the main problem that comes before the girls come at the right age to play at any club. Until Canada comes to terms with the need to emphasize work on technical skills before physical fitness from grassroots all the way up, hoping to win anything in the future is a pipe dream at best. The same problem is casting its shadow upon the US as the generation of winners in 2015-2019 is getting older and falling behind younger and more technical sides.

Ok I get you - was not so aware of this but does make sense

USA had the first women's pro league so have been ahead for ages but now others are catching up fast

Its inevitable there will soon be some kind of cup between the Womens UEFA CL winner and CONCACAF equivalent and then a Womens Club World Cup to prove who is the best

Realistically Brazil need a win to get out of the group. Jamaica need a draw to pull off a major shock.

Meanwhile Sweden have already qualified and their GD pretty much guarantees they'll top the group.

It is pretty fascinating that out of all the top countries the US so far looks by far the most vulnerable, unless I am forgetting about someone. The Netherlands ran out of steam against them in the 2nd half otherwise it wasn't much of a contest, and Portugal did the reverse and seemed to save the best for last. Any team that gets their stamina up like will undoubtedly happen over the next few games should be able to bowl them out of the tourney without much effort it seems.

I agree with some of the comments here that their play is quickly becoming reminiscent of the way an amateur team approach the game vs pro by trying to waltz over another team with mere running. Unfortunately for them the other countries have drastically improved tactically end technically that it feels a bit like a wave crashing into a seawall.

Did you see them?
Beautifully hit - more or less the same goal in each half, impressive. I'm reading she's on the move, any idea who she's linked with?

Another link to the goals:

For the UK viewers at least.

LOL! And these ones I can't see here. Ridiculous if you think about it. I have no idea if she was linked to anyone but I'm sure she will be now!

Geo locked for me but found it on youtube. What beauties. Many men would be jealous of the curl.

The USA have messed up the TV schedule by coming in as runners up in their group. FIFA had scheduled their expected route through R16/QF to kick-off in US prime time. Which is unfortunate for Netherlands fans whose team now have middle of the night slots (European time).

Could be good news for Sweden fans though. If they top their group they'll play the US at 11am (CET) on Sunday. The US fans will have to get up early.
