WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

So what are you lot's opinion on Wiegman as coach? In my opinion she is the female ETH. After making Holland European champion she did the same with England and England is in my opinion now the number one candidate to win the WC.

Good first half for England, disappointing really to be only 1-0 up but what a lovely one!

Keira Walsh going off on a stretcher is horrible though. It certainly looked bad enough to cost her the tournament, whether it's worse that that - we can only wish her luck. Fingers crossed it's not as bad as it looked.

Even after the necessary changes from the first match, the defence still looks very shaky. We’re lucky that Denmark aren’t really offering much up front. I’d be worried about what a Japan or a Brazil would do to us.

It's hard to know because it's hard to argue with her tournament record - which is extraordinary. On the face of it, her loyalty to her selection even in the face of disappointing performances ought to cause resentment or at least frustration to other squad members. But that's not what you see from the players - they look united and they look comfortable together and with her.

A fully fit England team is the number one candidate to win the tournament but that is not the case (Mead, Williamson and Kirby).......and their ranking without Walsh is now so much lower.

That's why I call her the female ETH. Erik also hangs on to his starting eleven too often in my opinion but the other players all seem at peace with that.

It's a massive shame we won't get to see anything near a full strength England side going at this WC.

Harder is so isolated when she plays for Denmark. It was the same in the Euros. I presume they've had better teams than they have now because I'm pretty sure she was a highly effective #10 7-8 years ago rather than this isolated lone striker role with little quality support.

Feels a lot like we're letting them play freely and if it carries on like this then they're bound to get a few great chances. Need to tie this off quickly and take advantage of all of the possession.

Considering she’s only 5’8, Earps’ ability with high balls is impressive. Seen a few women keepers caught out in situations like that.

Great to see Beth England get a chance here. She's an unbelievable goalscorer. Arguably the best finisher in the entire squad.

Woohoo! Netherlands World Champions!

Waterpolo, but still. Beggars can't be choosers.

Another narrow 1-0 win for England. Being as wasteful as that will get them killed against tougher opponents.

Just can’t see this team winning the tournament but hey atleast they have 2 wins out of 2

Got away with it in the end. Great start, decent first half but only one goal and enough weak links in the second half to make it an edgy affair in the end.

Well, we were great for about 20 minutes, which is an upgrade on the Haiti game. Onwards and upwards!

A draw had been more fair, but that is football. I don't usually watch women's football. But the level was a little better than I expected. The worst effort on the pitch came from the referee, but that's almost always the case ;-)

Without Walsh we just don't have the poise and composure to keep control of the midfield. Nice win but I feel a bit gloomy about our chances in this tournament now.

Not looking very clinical this tournament. Could cost them against a better team in the knockouts.

Thanks. I wasn't aware you weren't fully fit.

Creating chances is still a big problem for England. Without James it would be difficult to see them scoring and they'd be following the same pattern they've been on for a while. Other top teams are full of good shots on target and goals right now.

At least they looked good for 25 mins and carried the ball well in general but Russo wasn't involved much, can only remember the ball falling kindly in front of her in the 70th minute to run on to, she seems difficult to integrate but could score a bunch goals in the next games.

Oof, China's number 10 (Zhang) got a red for that very high tackle with the studs to the knee. Think Roy Keane on Alf-Inge Haaland for that one.

Confirmed.

China 0-0 Haiti after thirty minutes and China down to ten women.

Haiti are nobody's pushovers. They may have a hard time creating scoring opportunities without Dumornay but they're defensively sound and with a player advantage they're in with a shout here.

Well if you know the story about the Haitian training ground you would understand why they aren't push overs. It was taken over by gangs that use it as their HQ.

A good read that.

Also, a nice reminder of why talk about the possibility of different size footballs, goals, pitches etc at the elite level to make it look better on TV are rather dismissive of the extra complexity and costs it would involve at grassroots and youth level almost everywhere and even at the top level in most of the world. It was already a triumph for Haiti to get here, it would be great to see them get something out of this match.

Dumornay coming on, hopefully because she can play 45 minutes rather because she/they can't resist the gamble.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot from Haiti's perspective.

China take the lead on a penalty after being down by a player for such a long time.

That looked more like a penalty for China than the previous one. The VAR said otherwise though.

Seriously though, the Haitian defenders pick a very bad time to have a mare after a mare.
