WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

But how much of that is down to women simply being shorter than men? Katie Zelem scored directly from a corner in two successive games for United Women, and GK’s getting easily lobbed is pretty common in general across the women’s game. I sometimes wonder if the game would be improved if they played with smaller goals. Women playing with smaller/lighter equipment has precedence in other sports.

I think that is part of it, they struggle to cover so much of that goal frame but there have been players in the past with both the size and athleticism to do the job well (Hope Solo for instance). They just need more of them.

I switched it on as soon as I heard we were winning COYGIG, im on board

It does? Can’t think of any other sport which has different sized goals/posts for men and women. Or even different sized pitches.

In athletics, women’s javelins are shorter and lighter than men’s. I assume other throwing equipment are lighter too. The high hurdles are also smaller, and the race itself is shorter (110m vs 100m).

OMG, I loved to play in this kind of weather. I was decent/good in sunny weather but turned world class in torrential rain every time!

I was thinking in terms of team sports. Particularly sports with goals/posts. Rugby, field hockey, lacrosse, handball etc. All have the same goals/posts for men and women.

In terms of individual sports; tennis, badminton and volleyball have the same size nets and courts too.

Well I obviously wasn’t talking about those!

edit: I have found an example in a team sport. The ball in the WNBA is one inch smaller than the one in the NBA, apparently.

Also; women play fewer sets in slam events in tennis, which personally I think makes less sense than different equipment. Women’s stamina isn’t generallt less than men’s (in fact a number of open ultra marathon event records are held by women), but they are generally smaller

Ireland have good energy and committment. This is an improvement on the first game. A little composure lacking. Canada unimpressive.

I expect the streets to be closed upon their return for a glorious parade. Its what we do best

Was a great achievement for Ireland to reach the tournament but there was always a distinct lack of quality in key areas and the last two games have highlighted that. Well done to all and I hope we can bring some joy on Monday.

Thanks for the summary @Samid. I don't really pay much attention to what's been going on with the women, but just seen CGH have appoligized.

Do we know why she was dropped?

Graham is one of the best players in the world, she wasn't dropped for sporting or tactical reasons. The new management removed her from the captaincy group when they took over and ever since there has been friction between her and the management. After the Euros debacle last year she took a break from the national team citing fatigue and heart issues.

This wasn't known at the time but she likely took that break on the back of being told she won't be in the leadership group. No denying that she probably was fatigued and obviously she has had heart issues. But she also didn't inform the manager until right before she went public. If the reasons were solely fatigue and heart issues she would've surely consulted with the manager a while before going public. So that tension between the two has been building for a year now.

We don't know what's happening behind the scenes but she was likely pissed off at being totally isolated against NZ. The manager probably didn't take that too well and decided to bench her next game. I think all parties here are in the wrong and should've dealt with it much earlier and much better.

The height of a volleyball net is not the same in men’s and women’s. It’s also not an individual sport.

Ona means BUSINESS.

My dual allegiance to both countries has me conflicted but I'm rooting for the Dutch to get some revenge this time. Just feels like Rapinoe will probably end up getting a soft pk or something.

The World Cup deserves a different winner .. Come on Netherlands !!
