WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Has something new happened, been revealed in the press? I read that Hegerberg can't start.
That's right.

It's been reported by NRK (equivalent of BBC) that the players are unhappy with the coach and her team. No leadership, no direction, no plan b etc. It's like United under LvG, Mou and OGS :)

My 1st match of the tourny.. France have had the better opportunities so far.. They seem setup better tactically. And yes I think GKs are still a weak point in Women's football. I'm starting to think that many facets of goalkeeping have to be taught from a young age.. a bit like language skills.

Le Sommer gets France's first - great run from her and a good pass to find her. They deserve their lead.

The goalkeeping is terrible. Even 'good saves' are often just the keepers falling awkwardly on the ball.

I think that's true. Qualified coaches in girls junior football are still a rarity - we're only just seeing the equivalent of academy trained players arriving at international level in Europe. But training with specialist coaches for the U16s? That's very new for the girls and you won't see it at many clubs.

Some of the best women's keepers at international level trained with boy's/men's teams for a time - but that's not an option in most countries or at many clubs.

Brazil's first shot on target - straight at the keeper from half a mile away, by a player who has never scored an international goal :smirk:

1-0 France have a deserved lead and everything to play for for both teams in the second half.

It’s been all Brazil since the goal though.

Nobody wanted to mark her at the corner and who can blame them :D

France seems more compact a team than the Brazilians. The latter lose the ball too quickly

It’s like a basketball game. Very open back and forth. Both lacking quality in the final third but excellent progressing the ball through the middle third.

Didn’t realise Marta was still part of the Brazil set up. She made her international debut in 2002

So there’s a chance she could play a part later in the tournament?

Just realised that Sweden will play whoever finishes second in the USA/Netherlands group in the round of 16. That’s going to be a great game

Seems like perfect motivation for Oranje to go for a monsterscore against Vietnam.

0-0 at halftime, both teams had chances to score but not the composure to make it count. A real shame that Shaw is out.

Arsenal defender Amanda Ilestedt leading the tournament in scoring:

Tomorrow, Group H will complete their second matches and we'll start saying goodbye to some of teams with the third group stage matches beginning.

Group A will be the first to complete their matches and it's a group where all four teams are still (mathematically at least) able to get through to the knockouts.

Top two go through. If they draw on points it gets decided on: GD, then GF, head to head, fairplay(red/yellow cards), coin toss.

Come on New Zealand. No one wants to watch Switzerland in the next round.

Not a fan of Alisha Lehmann's you-know-what?

I also would like to see New Zealand through. But I can't say I have the same wish for Australia since they stand in the way of a Canadian qualification and since my favorite team in the AFC is Japan.
