WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

This is like women against girls. Portugal’s forward just beat 4 Vietnamese defenders to the ball in the box, all of whom were closer to it. I guess a 32 team tournament will include a few very weak teams like Vietnam.

1-1 draw against the US is a great result. Should have no problem reaching the next stage now. May even top the group if Portugal get a sneaky result against the US.

Australia v Nigeria - still drawing 1-1. This tournament still quite a painful process for Australia.

Good save by the Nigerian keeper - positioned herself really well for that point blank header.

I’m sure Gilly Flaherty knows what she’s talking about but her voice is proper nails down the blackboard stuff

3-2 Aussies score from a corner in the ninth minute of added time

That's painful for the hosts. Realistically they'll need a win against Canada to go through. Nigeria play Ireland in their last game and a win would guarantee them a place in the knockouts.

A draw is enough for Nigeria to reach the next round.

England vs Australia maybe in the last-16-round :nervous:

It really comes down to the wire with Canada against Australia on the final day of the group then. I sure did not expect that result for Nigeria at all.

Chances are that Nigeria will go through in Group B which means either Canada (Olympic Champions) or Australia (hosts and a team on a lot of people's contenders list) will go out. If it happens it will be a big day for Nigeria and a big day for women's football in Africa.

A lot of focus now will be on whether Sam Kerr can come back from injury and rescue Australia. Without a bit of a spark from somewhere, it's going to be hard for them to beat Canada - though neither team are playing like contenders.

New Zealand's group is wide open. Even Norway can still qualify if they beat the Philippines, but that's definitely an "if" - which is a pretty dreadful fall from grace for them.

Nigeria played an astute game...

I think the game against Denmark will be easier than the game against Haiti. I think.....

Wow! WOW!! I mean... WOW!!! The South African team is sooooo bad with the lead!

Do you realize what you've just done? I knew that I should not have expectations with that team, but to throw away a 2-goal lead and then most likely crash out of the tournament is just pure :lol::lol:.

England XI: Earps, Bronze, Bright, Greenwood, Daly, Walsh, Stanway, Toone, Kelly, Russo, James.

Subs: Charles, Hemp, Nobbs, Hampton, Wubben-Moy, Morgan, Carter, Coombs, England, Zelem, Roebuck, Robinson.

Lauren James and Rachel Daly start this one. Daly probably at fullback as it's Jess Carter who's missing - so Alex Greenwood probably moves to centre back. Lauren James for Hemp.

Glad to see some changes as not played well for ages but strange to see Daly at fullback when she's was the WSL top scorer this season

Been a lot of hype for Lauren James pretournament so big chance for her to prove she's worthy

Be cheesed off if I was Daly! Surely deserves a start upfront after her form this season there for both club and country.

Russo is the type of CF Wiegman likes to use though. Lots of movement, back to goal work etc. If they could play as a twin striker combination I think Wiegman might switch but that relies so much on the midfield, and it hasn't worked yet, Daly at fullback is easier.

Yeah just feel a bit sorry for Daly, as she's clearly made an effort to move to a club who will play her at CF and then proved herself to be more prolific than Russo this season. And whilst Russo was great as an impact sub at the Euros she hasn't done it as a starter for me for England.

Could have had a James hattrick by now

Much better today from England today. Toone/James/Daly working well together. Russo looking more comfortable too, very good at keeping the ball circulating near the area.

First shot from Denmark - could have been an excellent goal on the break.

Heavy fall for Keira Walsh. Certainly hurt her knee, how badly would be the next question. Very unfortunate.

Impressive half hour by England, just need to get Russo more involved.
