WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

The keepers were the stars of that England v Haiti game. As someone else mentioned earlier this looks like it will be a tough group to qualify from

This game went really flat for a while but it's waking up again now. Three minutes to play in this half.

Goalless at half time and next to no chances (apart from the odd setpiece). Hopefully someone will fancy winning this - rather than just trying not to lose it.

Could not watch the England game as I was playing myself, pretty shocked to see only 1-0!

I guess it's good that the minnows are giving a good account of themselves but worrying for Lionesses to struggle against the expected weakest team in the group

Respect. I usually save myself for when Sweden or Italy are playing, but no bad thing to get one in early in the competition.

China are making it frustrating for Denmark. They‘ve had no luck getting Harder on the ball in those central dangerous areas, or really on the ball at all.

I was expecting a trashing, surprised it was just 1-0 for england... how did russo play?

Chinese player (Lou JiaHui) who just came off had covered 10km in 76 minutes, pass completion 100%

Mostly the same way as she did for most of last season at United. Decent build-up play and good movement in front of goal but struggling to score. Better in the second half than she was in the first.

That looks offside to me. If that's for not interfering it's ridiculous.

Wasn’t a great game but lot of excitement at the end. Could be an important one that late goal

Seemed offside, the danish player jumped a bit, how does that not affect the goalie's reaction?

Cheers, I didn't watch many united matches last season, hopefully she can fix that at arsenal.

I don't like the current interpretation of not interfering at all - assuming that was the reason it wasn't offside and I didn't miss a trailing leg somewhere or something. It just doesn't sit right with the standard "play to the whistle'' advice that we grow up with. Of course the keeper reacts to the movement of the player coming in on her. Meh.

Whereas I'm hoping a crisis of confidence at the high expectations that come with her price tag will make her worse :smirk:

That's no way to talk about a former fan favourite, you should be ashamed.

It looks like the ball went off the South African player's elbow while that elbow was not in line with the upper body. That should have been called a penalty.

South Africa so close to getting a result today against Sweden, third in the FIFA rankings and one of the top teams in women's football history. Today has got to be a warning to the rest of the group (Italy and Argentina).

I only saw the last 15 minutes so I don't know how well Sweden played, but I imagine they'll be glad to have escaped with the points.

Portugal v Netherlands should be a good match up. Netherlands were finalists in 2019 and won the Euros in 2018. This isn't that team or that manager, but there are still a lot of familiar names in the team. Portugal look stronger every year (and I'll be doing my Muppet duty for the women's team). It could be a good match which probably means we'll just get a cagey borefest.

Ref sent to VAR screen to decide on offside after Netherlands goal. This time (unlike yesterday!) I do accept the ref's interpretation of interfering, even though I don't like the rule much 1-0

Interesting situation. I also tend to think Roord wasn't interfering in the situation, but then it does look a little like the keeper held back in her dive. But even if that's true, she probably wouldn't have saved it without Roord standing there.

Those Portugal shirts are terrible
As is most of the match so far... :boring: That was a good chance for NL just now though!

The stadium has huge empty spots btw. Has that been common so far? Although I now see the match is played in Dunedin (far away and fairly small). That might not help.

I wanted to say Dunedin sounds like a Lord of the Rings place, but then I realized Lotr takes place in New Zealand so it makes sense.

I had to look it up of course, and I saw it's really Dùn Èideann, which is the Gaelic name for Edinburgh. So.

I like Groenen, she's very tenacious. Supposedly Martens is great too, but she never is when I watch.
