Would you take Rangnick back (As a DOF and NOT a manager)?

Austria team under Rangnick is playing great football in this Euro. Guess Rangnick really had a clear idea of the type of football we should pursue.

The the umpteenth time. He wasn’t the problem and we made a big mistake not keeping him as DoF as planned.

The team was toxic and in a state. The first man to call out publicly what our squad needed.

Unpopular opinion but I mentioned it at the time - Rangnick did fine with coaching us until the motivation died that season. While the season was alive (while we were in the CL), it was fine and we had a good run. Lost a tight tie to Atletico Madrid. Once we were eliminated, the teams motivation went to dust and Rangnick as an interim felt no need to pull any punches. Combine that with the massive turnover of some big players that summer, was always going to end that way and wasn't on Rangnick.

Funny seeing more people come to the realisation that Ralf actually knows what he’s doing/talking about.

The karma of him knocking Portugal and Ronaldo out after his comments would be delicious.

The fact that people will still dig in and claim Rangnick was the problem and not the toxic ego maniacs and poisonous dressing room is just incredible. In all my life watching United I've never seen such blatant surrendering or a group of players who just didn't like eachother. I genuinely disliked them at the time and if you look at the personnel who have left or been shifted on loan since then it's no surprise we have a more likeable team now even when underperforming

It’s international football. A different world to club football. Rangnick saw the issues at the club and no doubt he knew what needs fixing and how. However, he was awful as a manager for us. Player were downing tools but the tactical setups by Rangnick were still subpar.

We played the same type of football for one half against Palace and I was excited.

That was it.

I'd have him as DOF

Imagine coming to a team in which your best player wants to leave, your hottest prospect being a massive a.h. and having troubles with the law, your established players (Shaw, Rashford, Maguire, AWB) having a dreadful season, your backup strikers wanting to leave as well, and your senior players (Matic, Mata) being past it, and having to make Elanga and Dalot your starters.

And then almost everyone call you the worst manager we ever had.

We made a good profit with Elanga and Dalot now is one of our best players. The established players are still playing below their supposed level with some purple patches every now and then, and yet the issue was apparently him. Madness.

I understand some criticism that he failed to motivate the team, which is valid, but since it was made obvious that he won't stay here, how the he'll did you expect the players that had let down manager after manager, to be motivated.

Still bemused by it all. You could see during that Palace game we were about to radically change our style of play and then never witnessed it ever again.

Don’t see the point of looking at what could have been.

As has been said, we now have Ashworth. Let’s stay positive and look to the future

How I would love to see that.

Ten Hag didn't want him
That's a myth. Ralf's biggest mistake was criticizing the upper management for the way they ran United into the ground and the fact that we need to ditch our star player/prima donna approach.

The management clearly didn't like this so they just let him go and then they briefed the press that ETH wanted him gone. Classic Glazer PR, feck up and then blame someone else for it.

Saying this for a while but people on here based their judgement on his tenure here as an interim. The guy knows his shit and would have been an excellent appointment in the footballing department.

I am certain Ragnick is far superior talent scout than Ashworth, 100% certain of this. Ashworth doesn't seem to be that knowledgable about world-wide talent, tbh, and him liking Southgate has created significant concerns. However:

1. DOF needs to plan financial part of a transfer and be great and negotiations, not just scouting. I have no idea how good Ragnick is at these. Maybe he is great, maybe not
2. Glazers hate him, so it will never happen
3. For some reason, it feels like Ten Hag didn't fancy him and never wanted to even talk to him?

He was worse than Moyes

guy didn't cut in the EPL, just like Messi in France. some people only succeed in certain situations

Only on redcafe.

Plenty still think Moyes should have got more time though.

It's a no brainer to have him as DOF. He would have a clear vision in mind and has an eye for talent (or hiring people who have that eye).

I didn't mind him as a manager as well though not at the expense of ETH.

Said managing Man United would be the same as managing Schalke, said managing Ronaldo wouldn't be a problem because he did it with Ebbe Sand. Took more holidays than Judith Chalmers, leaving the bulk of training in the hands of a couple of MLS coaches even more out of their depth than him, and when he was around, spent his time facetiming an analyst in Moscow - even during half time intervals.

But he said some things in press conferences that people liked so I guess that evens out, right?

How the hell does doing decently as an International manager mean we should have given him the DOF job?

The usual over-reaction on the caf.
It’s a bit strange isn’t it. Is he a DoF or a coach, nothing he is doing right now is strengthening his credibility as a DoF, it is however showing once again that he is able to coach average players how to press, which is the red bull model.

He’s never been able to do it with top players, so I'm not surprised he turned down the Bayern job.

I’m going to be completely honest I have zero memory of his time here. I’ve scrubbed it from my mind entirely

No, we’ve got one. Let’s see how he does.
I'm not sure Ashworth had more acclaim than Rangnick in the DOF role, to be honest. But Ashworth is still young and can grow even more. Not sure if the whole gardening leave circus for 1 year is worth it, though.
