Does anyone really believe Conte would have won us the title this year?

Well for one our defense would've been much more organized and wouldn't have regressed into the shambles it was so often during the season.

In turn maybe we wouldn't have dropped as many points as a result. We were still in the title race up until early February, not conceding as many silly goals and holding onto 3 points instead of ending in draws would've made a big difference

Had it not been for our ridiculous start and lack of preseason there is good reason to think, based on our season form otherwise, we'd have been 5-9 points better off. Then similarly with the end of season congestion.

Do you really think he would have won the league against this City squad though? We've seen he isn't up to much in Europe, so his biggest pro is his domestic record, but I can't see how anyone thinks he wins the league to City, with our team, with the circumstances we were under.

General reaction after a loss. Disappointment leads to fans scrabbling for the usual candidates

He’d want to buy a whole new set of players and the process starts again

I am curious to know the reason why someone would say no to Conte coming here to us, I am sincerely curious.

He's doesn't play the most attractive football and he falls out with owners so he'd likely only be here a couple of years. His CL record is poor also.

Having said that, the guy wins league titles for fun and we are desparate for a league title.

My preference if we were looking for a new manager would be to hire what the caf would refer to as one of the "hipster managers". We've gone the route of boring proven trophy winners before and it's not worked out.

Ultimately, sacking Ole for 2nd would be harsh, if we make the right signings in the summer - worst case should be we finish top 4 again and fall short. That's the point where it's untenable.

There's probably a hundred reasons already listed in the thread. "better than Ole" should not be the sole criteria when considering a replacement.

Even without strategic signings Conte would push Pep’s City all the way and if they slip up at some point we could dream. See everyone needs talents to consistently challenge indeed but Conte would still have a fair shot even if he was not so blessed.

Conte builds from the back, entrenching defensive stability first first foremost and then uses a powerful counterattacking weapon going forward. Bruno would even improve even more if Conte was here. The guy is tactically savvy.
Yes with 1-2 strategic signings. At least I think we would be up around 80-90 points. City could of course got more.

It’s funny to see that 36% of the posters on the forum have learnt absolutely nothing about the period post Fergie. Probably the same 36% that would sell their souls to the Saudis too. Football is about more than just names and even results, Utd fans should know that more than any other fans.

Apparently good enough for the biggest club in the world but of course he'd be just another dinosaur like Mourinho at United :rolleyes:

Should we hire Rafa Benitez then?
Yes Rafa Benitez coming off a decent stint at Napoli is definitely the equivalent of Conte coming off winning Inter's first league title in a decade after finishing a point back of the title the year before

Well we have the likes of Rangnick, Ten Haag & possibly Rose (after spell at Dortmund) who fall into that category along with probably Poch as well and no I am not one of those in our fanbase that buys into him being someone who bottles trophy opportunities either

Why are you surprised?

It's the cafe. There were plenty of people on here making excuses for the shambles vs Villareal.
Yep, unfortunately large number of fans reminisce of old times and live in nostalgia. Club takes full advantage of that and is content with top 4.

So, Pep and Klopp are the only 2 managers you'd take over Ole currently?

Besides those 2, Ole is the best manager in the world?
Said none of those things. I just don’t see a manager that you could get right now that will continue the good work that has already been done at the club in terms of mentality and so on. Do tactics and playing style need to improve yes, vastly. It’s also going to take a strong character to fix the issues Pogba, Bruno and Rashford cause in the make up of our team.

However, Ole is hopefully aware of his own flaws and is adaptable unlike some managers we’ve seen.

Currently there just isn’t a manager where I’d be like, oh that’s the guy I want to replace Ole.

Yeh I only enjoy watching the club for nostalgia. In fact I don’t even watch any modern games, every Saturday I just stick on a repeat.

Hypothetical situation - would you take Conte at United ? Do you think he would be a good fit ?

Unlike other teams he has managed , we won't sell players , we invest decent money every year.

No, the project has not regressed

Broadly, Ole's philosophy is to get the most talented players with individual skills and make them work hard. United are not the richest club to be able to buy the best players. If so, then we need a new strategy if we want to win things. You need a psycho who hates losing and will squeeze blood from his players to achieve his goals. That would be Conte. But there will be a cost to this. Players who are the more timid sort will ask to leave. Hmmm, thinking further, is that a cost or benefit? Yelling at some underperformers and getting them to leave on lower wages may not be a bad idea.

Why not, he won the title with a bunch of players who were no longer good enough for us.

In Italy. You're really comparing the challenge there to the one in the Prem? The Prem has never been harder. Just look at the two teams in the CL final.

Inter finished bottom of their CL group.

You really think Conte would beat this City squad and manager to the title under the circumstances we had, with the squad we have?

That is the worst Juve team in a long time.

City, Chelsea have the right structure in place to support the manager, we do not and any manager coming in will fail until that changes.

Yes. Simply because I believe Ole is a pochettino level manager. He will stabilize us and maybe win us a couple of cups but I don't see him getting us the league.

Hahaha. Sometimes Ole frustrates me but...

Have we learned nothing from Moyes, LVG, Jose? Such short memories of the dross we saw week in week out under these guys.

Omg. Someone new is available. Lets bring them in and let them change everything.

True Ole screwed up with the Greenwood substitution but the lack of options off the bench is only something that can be addressed in multiple windows. I fully expect 2 of the 3 positions of CB, CDM and RW to be significantly improved this summer.

Nope, I don't want him.
Hi might win us some trophies but in 3 years, when he leaves, we would be left with a squad older than himself.

I hear this all the time and don't understand it one bit. Squad rebuilding is a constant reality, you don't built and forget for 5 years. I would rather someone helps us win trophies and leave a rebuild than the perpetual rebuild cycle we are in now. If Pogba and DDG feck off and Cavani will likely will as well, we have another rebuild incoming. And that's not counting the already open holes in the squad. Martial is no closer to showing us his full potential and Rashford is hit or miss.
