I think the issue is simple. The board don't feel they have got value for money from the 350m+ they have given him. So they aren't going to break the bank for players they feel aren't top tier or who the scouts feel aren't top tier.
If Mourinho had mounted a serious challenge last season with his signings playing out of their skin, I have no doubt they would have gone out of their way to give him what he wants.

Well if the board are now making such distinctions and actions then we're fecked as as a club for the foreseeable a club as it means we don't value spending to compete with City or to put it another way, we're only willing to do so on a lesser budget.

Rather than building on second place we've decided thats enough for now. Depressing :(

Bingo.

Glad people are finally coming round.

We spend for the CL money and even that is becoming less important because of the massive domestic TV deal and that in turn would become even more irrelevant if it ever gets to a point where United as a club negotiate TV deals independantly.

I can't believe people haven't worked this out yet.
 
Look on the bright side hyperventilating crowd: you can always get FIFA or whatever and transfer players to United to your heart's content. Pretend reality doesnt exist. Lock yourself in a basement and have fun.

People are taking my criticisms of Mourinho as a way of me shielding the board from blame. I couldn't think less of Ed than I do now. This clubs lacks vision and we aren't going anywhere as long as that is sorted out.

Mate you're free to believe what you want, but I think people on the Caf have a problem of painting our issues in huge swathes of black and white. The meltdown here is illustrative of that mindset. I can't believe things have gotten crazy enough that I am being forced to speak positively of the Glazers, but here we are. The blame ought to be shared equally by all those involved in the running of our club, from the board to Woodward to our managers past and present in the post-Fergie timeline. Placing the blame for our underperforming team squarely on the board's shoulders is a huge passing of the buck from the manager that I frankly find unacceptable and disingenuous.

Bale isn't pushing for a move is he? Why would he leave the CL winners for a side who couldn't get past Sevilla? None of the talents anyone dreams of playing for this club actually want to come here. Don't know if it is a Manchester thing, or a manager thing. We should be trying to challenge for the title. We are showing absolutely no ambition to improve things. It is all just hoping that the players who were abject attacking wise last season can actually perform this season, but of course they have had a World Cup so obviously will be tired. I just hope they get a really good win to start the season on Friday.

Pretty much true. The Vision, Planning and execution is flawed.

Don't say we have no ambition. We have signed some pretty good players, though we can say we need proper planning and better execution and certainly a lot better tactics we have shown on the field last season and in preseason. Just hoofing the ball to nowhere and loosing posession in few seconds while defending all the time is not good enough one bit.

Then maybe we needed a manager who still has that drive and can make things happen. Think Jose has come here and not realised we had been managed by an absolute genius in the past who could get the best out of even a bad lot.

I disagree with your assessment. The root of the issues in our club right now lies within the board and the Glazers.

They are satisfied with a champions league spot because they view on the situation is (to paraphrase Ed) that they dont actually need to win things to make money and this is reflected in our transfer dealings this season.

Is part of the problem maybe not this list business?

Working simultaneously on sixteen potential transfers can’t be easy. Ideally we’d have deals agreed with most of our targets prior to the window opening, and then just confirm them when it opens. Then have a realistic first and second choice and do what it takes to land them. Even wait to the last minute, if need be.

I suppose a lot depends on whether the way things are reported are actually true or not, and we do tend to make a couple of early signings, so I’m not sure.

"BOATEND WANTS MOVE, MOURINHOS FIRST CHOICE"
"MAGUIRE HOPING FOR UNITED MOVE, 2 BIDS REJECTED"
"ALDERWEIRELD ON THE MOVE"

Basically, the press know feck all other than gossip...and they use this to create a narrative that we're in decline, in crisis, to sell papers or generate clicks...
 
If our board are refusing to fork out the fees demanded today, then there's little chance of us forking out the going prices in future windows

If that is the case, this would surely be the time to invest and give opportunities to youth prospects throughout the season.

Jose, how would you feel about that?

We need a RW and LB and the only players we're linked to in the last month are CB's.

On top of that we're linked with 3-4 of them in the last 24 hours and no one knows what's going on and who is our priority. :lol:

Im literally not believing anything until our official outlets announce it. There is so much made up rumours and hype. I think this has got to be one of the worst years for the media bashing us. It's relentless!!

That's the catch 22 situation we are in, there are hardly any managers who can compete with the current bunch of competition we have in the league, who might play more ambitious football in big games. I don't think Zidane is ready to jump in this pressure and Allegri is not exactly who plays ambitious as well against total football. So Sacking him might not be the perfect solution for now though Jose certainly needs to find better ways on the pitch to get the best out of the bunch and show some ambition in big games, but it's the consistency which he needs to find in smaller games might be more crucial than just the big game for big honours.
 
I can feel a Fellaini moment coming on! So disappointed with Utd this window, but not at all surprised. If our football is as bad as the handling of the transfer window then we will be out of the running for the league ( and possibly without a manager ) by Christmas.
 
If I was Mou, I'd resign once the transfer deadline had passed. Let Woody sort the mess he created
 
This is going to be a fun couple of days. I'm minded to keep my head down until Friday morning but I know I'll be F5ing like a beast tomorrow.
