I don't mind a few youth players being promoted, but the problem is that the club is already well behind its nearest rivals. We don't have an authoritive player in key central positions (defence or midfield). Its one thing winning the league and then throwing a few youth players into the mix, but this is a squad with serious questions hanging over in relation to ability and fitness/injuries.

To rely on unproven youth is taking a huge gamble that could have serious ramifications.

We will do better against the lower sides we struggled against last year, but can see us getting trounced once again against the big lot. We have lost 4 leaders, who's going to lead us now?

Is it possible that our recent lack of activity in the transfer market is due to LVG rather than Woody?

It seems we have the money to spend big but the impression i get is that LVG still needs time to fully evaluate the current players, i'm sure he has been given inside knowledge of the players from Giggs but i suspect the delay in signing can only be due to wanting to see the players over an extended period of time rather than a few weeks.
I think so too,we were a bit unfortunate he had the distraction with Holland with time to evaluate and prep the team(utd) for the new season.

Wasn't just Woodward mouthing off - Moyes was also adamant we were signing world class players too -

"The amount of big players wanting to join United is incredible," Moyes said. "Maybe players want to go for the money to other clubs but if you ask them where they really want to be: they want to wear the badge of Manchester United.

"It's because of the club and what it stands for in world terms. Players are not looking at the share price. They are looking at the football club."

Fast forward to the end of the summer window and once again we're left with squad problems we have had for years.

I don't disagree but we did it with the fledglings and LvG is the kind of manager who's done even better with youth (at Ajax) - if he thinks we have youth that are ready I'm game. I still want the kind of players whoa re in their prime, but I wouldn't go crazy if he promoted a few.

no United manager would ever say that the club can't attract the top talent am I right?

"Watch this space".

The space on the keyboard. And above the space; a comma. The pause before the inevitable. And then there lies the full stop. The end. Close to the way forward but just out of reach. No future. Just bleakness. Always the same. Never changing. With Cleverley still passing fecking sideways.

We have never been a "top club" when it comes to transfers, maybe within England and even then we have missed out on targets.

Problem with this entire transfer window is that people actually believe the shite that the club comes out with and had unrealistic expectations, Vidal, Hummels, Di Maria, break world records, spend 200 million, like any of that would ever happen at United? There is more chance of me signing for United than any of those lot. We are shopping in a totally different market despite the constant BS that Ed comes out with. Oh yeah we bid 100 million for Gareth Bale as he was signing his Madrid contract, christ, Burnley could do that!

Our owners just want to bleed money out of the club and get back into the CL, despite all the properganda that is all they want and are banking on LVG being able to somehow work miracles with a average squad just like Fergie did over the past couple of years.

I said it about a month ago that our spending was done bar maybe a versatile defender and I stick by that now. We are absolultey miles off City/Chelsea/Arsenal and are now competing with Liverpool & Spurs for 4th IMO. And if LVG gets it with the current squad then that would be a great season.

There's no such a thing as being a top club when it comes to transfers. We've been a top european club for as far as i can remember, there's no transfer cup, transfers don't define a club. It doesn't matter if you buy top stars or develop them, what matters is the endgame which is success and we've been pretty successful apart from last season's nightmare.

I understand your pessimism but the reality isn't that bad, we've spent in one year around 120M on 4 players which is unprecedented for the club, that might not be enough to fix our current problems but still it's allot of money and we're looking at spending more, that shows that we're willing to spend to get back to the top. I doubt we'll sign all the world class players we're linked with by the end of the month, it's frustrating and i don't understand the delay, but i think we'll improve in a way that satisfies van gaal eventually.

Looking at the evidence of where the best players in the world go when transferred, Real Madrid and Barcelona are streets ahead of anyone else and can justifiably be looked upon as "top clubs".

They're top clubs because of their success, not because they buy top players.

A most poetic breakdown, sir.

You can't have success without top players.

And they both basically feature the best players in the world at this present time.

Barcelona didn't buy messi, xavi or iniesta, in fact in the past 10 years real madrid have signed more stars and spent much more money, still barcelona had more success, which was my point. You don't win anything in the market, you win by having a successful team, how you assemble that playing and coaching team differs from one club to another.

Is what I've been thinking, after all, I think the 'watch the space' interview that's seemingly angered everyone now was before LVG came out with his "necessary" 3-4 week evaluation plan. Plus the experts on here have told us it's LVG's personality that if he's not getting what he wants, he'll speak up. so we'll know anyways.

Yes, but surely it'd better to say nothing rather than set himself up for ridicule.

So lets say a journalist approach the manager and he asks him if United can attract the best players what should he say?

No question. And Giggs and Scholes saved United millions of pounds due to their high level of play for so many years.

The problem now is that our MF is lacking-and requires an upgrade. Not sure the in-house talent is good enough. Herrera is a start, and should not be the end of improving the MF for this season.

Well yeah, but Barça wouldn't have been half as successful is Messi, Xavi and Iniesta weren't the best players in their positions on the planet would they?

He should say "watch this space" ;)

Some people don't understand how awkward the manager is in these situations. First of all I believe that at that point (early part) they genuinely believe that the club can attract the best players. I am sure that Woody knows how to sell the product well. Secondly once our chairman had gone into muppet mode there's little one can do. What do you expect out of the manager? Should he ridicule his superior by saying that all his promises are just a bunch of shite aimed to sell more tickets and attract more sponsors?

No, that's our job! :)

Anyone else think that we are content to get back into the champions league for this season and it's more likely we will spend next summer where players will come on standard wages and not giving them 5 year contracts way over the odds.

Next Summer will be our summer

Next Summer will be our summer

Seems more likely than anything tbh. What's the point in paying well over the odds if Van Gaal thinks he can get champions league this season? It would be nice to see a few more players brought for the really weak positions but I don't want the club to not be able to get rid of players in the future because of insane contracts.

 Fecking liars the both of them. At least LVG speaks the truth.

Personally I don't think we will buy a top player this summer, but i would be surprised if LVG didn't sanction the purchase of a couple of decent reliable cover players...

Wouldn't actually surprise me if Van Gaal did exactly that.

Woodward just needs to learn to calm down. Best to promise nothing and get something than to promise the world and get Fellaini.

Tick tock Ed...

Our current squad is not good enough to challenge for the title I feel. The initial giddiness of pre-season has settled and I feel it'll be a substantial challenge to achieve top four right now. Have not been overly impressed with us the last few games to be honest and I'm wary.

Up to Woodward now, deliver or we're fecked.
