It would be quite incredible if he comes out of this window appearing even more cretinous than he did 12 months ago. Nevertheless, that seems to be the current trajectory. The club should look to make a change in this area - that doesn't mean to say Woodward has to go, but some kind of sporting/technical director with worldwide contacts and experience in closing deals, should be brought in to assist. That's for another time though; for the reminder of this window, our only hope is probably going to be resorting to third-party negotiators to close the deals (see Mata).

We might well go down that route.

But the next 16 days or whatever it is until the window closes will be the most important of Woodward's career in the role, whether he lasts another one year or twenty.

He absolutely has to deliver on what van Gaal wants and needs. The consequences of failure to do so could be severe for both himself and the club.

He cannot possibly be that shit.

I honestly think they have delayed hoping that LVG could work miracles with the current squad like SAF did.

After yesterday they may realise that this isn't going to happen. It will now come down to straight economics- how valuable is the Champions League? How valuable is success? This will determine how much cash they are willing to spend on transfers.

As LVG said a transfer can be done quickly once a decision is made so I wouldn't worry about time running out. If we need to qualify for Europe to make the business plan work we'll spend money in the next couple of weeks and it could well be a lot of money.

If success on the pitch isn't actually that important in terms of immediate revenues and fan base and commercial deals are the main driver then there's no justification to spend big.

After LvGs comments and Moyes article its removed any inclination i had to give Woodward the benefit of doubt.

January for me was a huge tipping point where we failed to do the required business. I just can't believe we're looking like failing again

Can we just get rid of him now? At least it would give us a couple of weeks of hope

Does anyone actually think he will bring anyone in? I don't understand why people think he can achieve in 2 weeks what he has failed in 3 months. None of this is surprising. It's the same mistakes as last summer.

Biggest club in the world....

My only hope is that yesterday makes us panic and release there's no alternative. At this point, I don't mind us overpaying for quality in areas we need. Overpaying for the likes of Fellaini, Young, Zaha etc is what I have a problem with, not for quality. Frankly, we don't have a choice.

People think Jones and Smalling are worse than O'Shea and Brown?

Come off it.

That won't happen. It's been abundantly obvious we've needed quality - LVG admitted this yesterday. What's going to change the owners minds? Nothing. They are parasites.

I'd say currently they both on par with Brown.

Brown was prone to make silly mistakes, but that was when he would come into the side after a long injury. When he had a run of games he used to be pretty solid.

It's similar to having scored no goals in the first 80 minutes of a game, you can still score in the last 10. One could sign 2-3 players in the next two weeks, though Woodward doesn't fill me with confidence.

It's not really a case of can he, it's more he has to. If he doesn't, he needs to be let go, or at least relieved of transfer responsibilities.

Why would the glazers let go of a man who has done exactly what they wanted?

Brown had entire seasons here that neither Jones or Smalling have got anywhere close to. Granted he had dips and brainfarts, but if time was called on Jones or Smalling this minute, there's no way they would be on par with Brown as servants of United.

Not sure where O'Shea stands with regards to those to as he had a debut season here neither have come close to matching and after that had a bizarre ride of ups and downs.

If you ask me how I feel about Ed Woodward now after the current updates on transfers, Robert De Niro sums it up for me in the best manner there is:

:mad::mad::mad::mad:

The comparison isn't 'which has been a bigger/better servant to Manchester United' though is it. When viewing the squad now compared to 2008, people are comparing the ability of players - Smalling and Jones are more than adequate right now of filling the gaps that O'Shea and Brown left behind.

This is all so depressing.

An idiot can see we need quality players and we need them quick, it was obvious last summer as it is now. The terrifying thing is our lack of activity this summer. There is no doubt LVG came with a list of targets, none of which have been acquired and lets be honest I don't think we will bring in more than one player (Rojo) before the deadline. Everyone is talking about the defense and yes that needs addressing but the midfield is still the fecking issue. When you are cut open on the break every single time it is because your midfielders are unorganised, slow and not physical enough and thats right across the midfield whether you play 2, 3, 4 or 5 midfielders including wingbacks. We are a mess and LVG knows it just as Moyes knew it.

Are any fans or anyone at the club still disputing the fact we need 3/4 top quality professionals to go straight into the first 11? Surely not. It's the Glazers. They will suck us dry then cut and run.

What we have learnt? moyes job was so difficult , because of the state of the squad, by a glazer model that is hitting us like a collapsed building now, this summer has proved it. Not making enough signings too get us where we need to be at, it's august and we know we are not going to win the title

and for me this mask is no longer going to save Woodward and the glazers who are the real problem. Many have said, this squad is not that bad, we won the title with this squad 2 years ago, as time goes on that excuse is going to be well and truly run dry

If van gaal a so called world class coach cannot do any better, then it questions the shape fergie left the squad in for the future manager. Or in other words the shape the ownerships tight per strings has left on the squad long term, relying on fergie's unbelievable ability to keep the club competing on a tight budget with a squad regressing. And now that regression has caught up with the Club

It also shows the mess the ownerships model is leaving on the clubs inability to compete these days, that 4 year period of 2009-13 of no longer making the key signings to keep the club at the top, is leaving brutal results. We can say we have spent 120 million, but that summer 2009 period to summer 2012 if on the odd occasion spending big the club has left the squad to regress so much, I do not think 120 million is enough, especially when how much of that cash has been spent wisely? Fellaini? Mata? That cash could have been used on a top class CM, and a wide player. So the glazer model is truly starting bite back, when 120 million since summer 2013 has not improved us to where we need to be at, it's a concern

If I was the glazers, they should sell now, because they do not have the resources to give van gaal the financial needs to get this club where they once were. The more the glazers stay, the more they are holding this club back. No way can we compete with madrid barca chelsea man city, with the kind of money those 4 clubs have got.

Is that the spending of the biggest club in the world? It's a fraction of what we actually generate.

In the glazers eye that is allot of money, they think 120 million spent should see instant results, when in reality they need too go. They do not have the resources to keep us competing, and since summer 2013 its shown their lack of resources to the bone. We got a world class manager, same results

What would happen to him if we signed nobody else this summer/panic bought badly on deadline day? Would we be able to put some serious pressure on him? I'd assume investors would get on his back, along with LVG, as it is for his constant bullshit talk about transfers
I think there is a very good chance of us not signing anyone else this summer regardless of results.

Eh?? Do not have the resources??? They do - but they are choosing not too because they are lining their own pockets.

It's fecking incredible that some fans still do not see this. Our lack of spending is down to choice from the owners. To make matters worse, SAF and Gill were culpable in peddling the "no value" nonsense.

LVG knows that he can always make a late dash for the likes of William Carvalho, Depay and Vlaar at the end of the window to keep the fans happy if we can't get ready made world class stars.....We will definitely make more signings but whether they will be signings that can impact us right away or signings that are for the future because we couldn't get ready made stars - then we'll just have to wait and see...This transfer window was never going to be straight forward with no Champions League football

There was absolutely no chance that Kroos and Fabregas were ever coming here without Champions League football despite what Moyes keeps trying to deceive us into believing had we kept him on

Also 60 million over 8 months on the rubbish Fellaini and Mata, who I'm not sure we even needed given our midfield issues. Moyes not only was rubbish in terms of managing the side, he also spent oddly.

Looking back at last summer is quite amusing now tbf. The immense arrogance that we'd be in the top 4 no matter what, even if David Moyes fails spectacularly we'd just pick up easily after he left with no long term damage as we're 'too big to fail' and most of all the biggest priority of course being cleansing the club of all the glory hunters.

I will never, ever understand why did that interview with MUTV. Everything he does makes no sense, it's no coincidence that our transfer business has turned into a joke since he took over.

They do not have the resources, because that means they are losing money by spending it on transfers, so yes they do not have the funds too see us compete with the big boys. If we did we would not be haggling over 2 or 3 million, in their eyes 120 million is allot of money to dish out

Oddly puts it mildly.

But he sure tried to sing Ronaldo, Bale and Fabregas, so he shall be forgiven.

It's incredible we couldn't find value in a market where 18 year old left backs weren't going for £30m after 2 seasons in the top flight.

The only good part is the Adidas deal ties into us being in the CL. Missing out on Europe would hurt the Glazers just as much.

No point arguing on this. The Glazers have plenty of money - they just do not want to spend it on Utd.

Mods, can you reset the poll please, interested to see how the voting will change.

We would have to miss out on CL this season and next season for that to happen though.

They can just downgrade? We'll still be making a shitload of money without the CL from Adidas and Chevrolet. They just have to cut down expenses/wage bill to retain the same margin.

If LVG goes after such players, it will be a massive professional suicide because they just don't have it to pull us up. FFS, we all saw Vlaar at Aston Villa and there's nothing to suggest he would fit the bill at the back. Carvalho... doesn't even make the starting XI for Portugal. In short, we have enough of going with hopefuls and prospects, especially in a shitty situation like ours.

Meanwhile, the Glazers are such a bunch of losers. No wonder why dozens of people like him were responsible of the 2008 financial crisis, thinking they knew it all because they have ties with Wall Street. Tossers.
