With Jose still in charge - I am NOT looking forward to next season

I wish we'd be smart enough to get rid half way through the season. We waited until CL was mathematically gone with Moyes and Van Gaal got his full 2nd season despite by December we had passed a breaking point and it was obvious he was going to be sacked. We don't act like a big club and accept mediocrity so that's what we're going to see this season. Mourinho isn't going anywhere during the season. I just hope we wise up and sack him at the end hopefully. Or he walks at some point. But not a chance in hell its while the season is running, unfortunately.

If I'm being perfectly honest, I'd gladly finish 5th this year and miss out on top 4 if it meant he would be sacked and only sacked like that above another season like last one. Short term pain, long term gain. I dont think he'll be sacked as long as he makes top 4 so whatever it takes.
Yep. The board will wait until top 4 is not possible before pulling the trigger. Just like they did with Moyes and LVG. LVG especially should've been gone in Christmas 2015 after losing 4 straight games and getting knocked out of CL by Wolfsburg. Perhaps we may have got top 4 if someone else had come in then. The board are too slow to react. Just look at how ruthless Bayern Munich were with Ancelotti last season. After a poor run of games ending with the 3-0 defeat to PSG he was sacked straight away .This was in september. They didn't hang around and this is a league they've dominated for the last 5/6 years. There's more chance of Mourinho walking himself rather than getting the sack probably.

You make some decent points but at the same time...

Mourinho signed Lindelof (missed or not willing to coach him to start this season wants a 3rd CB signing). Signed Bailly but decided not to play him at the end of the year and in the fa cup final because he wanted to give players a chance to make the WC (what the feck is that about).

Fred will start regularly and will play a far bigger role than Carrick did last year - hardly played.

I rate Valencia higher than most and Jose fancies Dalot somewhat. Young is adequate (which isn’t good enough for United standards) and Shaw has a lot of talent but has been shit last 2 years - should’ve bought a LB.

Martial wants to leave because he’s on the fecking bench and in a defensive team and got slated in public alongside Rashford - that is on Jose.

The bottom line for me is Jose and the board are both flawed but Jose needs to get on with his fecking job because there’s a lot of talent there and he’s underperforming.

a- Bailly had become injury prone. That's not Mou's fault. He might (or might have not) cocked up on Lindelof (too early to say). However, managers mess up every now and then. I can make a list of all SAF's failures and he's been a great talent spotter throughout his career. Shit happens.

b- Carrick needed to be replaced last year but the club ran out of steam. We had to prioritise between bringing a replacement to an injured Ibra or adequately replace Carrick. Considering that we already had our eyes on Matic then we moved for the latter. We spend the entire season praying to the gods nothing happened to Matic as we would have ended up in deep shite. Fred should provide that cover but it shouldn't take us 2 years to finally have a DM and a decent cover for the role.

c- Valencia and Young are 33 year old wingers whom we moved to full backs because we hardly have a choice. There's no one decent we can play there yet.

d- On Martial I agree. There again, players fall out with managers on a regular basis. SAF had massive fallouts with Ince, Kanchelskis, Beckham, RVN, Keane and Stam and he was a genius in man management. Its up to the club to be able to bring adequate replacement when and if needed (which in this case they did with Sanchez)

We claim we're the biggest team in the world. Its time we act upon that claim. The biggest club in the world shouldn't be relying on 33 year old make shift wingers as full backs, they should have adequate cover for key positions and they should have at least 1 top quality right winger.

That title was his second in 4 years.
He has won something like 5 trophies in the last 5 years as well...I mean...
He does win, its If you can stomach how he goes about it
True, but if you look at his record overall he's won two major trophies in eight years.

If we start defending him by listing the league cups and Europa leagues that he's won we're somewhat patronizing him, don't you think? The self-proclaimed special one should be better than that.

State of Mourinho. Miserable sod. lol

This is part of what heightens the anger, to see our two biggest rivals with managers playing the kind of football, and having the kind of attitude towards young players, that is in keeping with our traditions, whilst we have a manager who is the anithesis of our club.

This whole waiting until the wheels completely come off mentality the board has with managers is ridiculous, Bayern, Real, Barca etc....the clubs were supposed to at the top table with are ruthless when the manager turns out to be the wrong fit.

We are literally as bad to watch as the Irish football team are. However one has the excuse of having Shane Long as their best attacker.

Had enough of the negativity, it’s constant and wears me down. Don’t enjoy watching the team or even reading news about the club right now. I’ve followed Utd for 35 years and never felt so distanced or dispassionate about it.

I know that doesn’t matter at all and I can choose to do other things etc etc but still, where’s the fun gone?

Other fans openly mock us as to how boring we are to watch.

And, to be honest, if I wasn’t a United fan I wouldn’t watch us, there have been games recently where I have “forced myself” to watch to the end almost out of obligation.

Part of what I've read I agree with. However I feel we've been in decline for a while. There was a real lack of investment towards the end of fergies time here. Moyes is laughable. LVG wasted some serious money on poor poor players.

Hypothetically, If the board sack Mourinho where do we go from there? Whoever comes and manages us, We still have a squad of average Joe's, crocks or ageing players like Darmian, jones, shaw, fellaini, rojo, Herrera, Valencia, young, etc. Mid table premier league players at best.

What if a new manager comes in and the better players Don't fit his plans? He then needs to replace them and clear out the trash as well. It's a big project for anyone.

So I don't think the answer is sack the manager. Sure if he is atrocious this season then maybe we will have too. It's usually obvious when you get to that stage.

But even with a new manager they would have the same problems. Our scouting and player recruitment is woeful. None of the players we buy seem to fit a long term strategy, too many are bought to fill holes in a system rather than because they will be quality for years, under whatever manager. Board don't seem to want to invest this year, how much money do we have? If we wanted to sign 5 or 6 players we would have by now. Woodward is caught where he is messing round with sponsors and trying to get deals done because we don't have a director of football/technical director.

There's a lot more going on than just the manager I feel.

And, we all love attacking football but what's the combined trophy haul of Klopp and Poch? And may as well add in Arsenal under Wenger? Watford and Bournemouth seem to play some floral stuff when I've watched them, they're mid table teams.
And on the other hand, there are some people who seem to believe that if we change manager they would win the treble or something, with THIS squad..........

Feeling pretty despondent about the upcoming season. For the first time in a while

I can't remember the last time Liverpool had an undeniably better transfer season than us. Super depressing

I feel exactly the same way. This is the first year I haven't even bothered to catch a pre-season game.

I'm terrified about this season. Jose will lose the dressing room like he always does and we'll miss out on top 4. This will give us another 2-3 seasons to get ''back'' to the best by giving a new manager time all while Chelsea, City & Liverpool add to their squads. We've had 5 depressing years and it doesn't look like it's gonna get better any time soon. But hey, at least we have a EL & League Cup that we got lucky with our opposition.

What evidence is there that he will lose the dressing room?
Is it the fact that he's seemed happy and having a laugh with the whole squad or do you prefer to judge him on whats in the media?
Is it the fact that he's talking about bringing in the first team players and seems excited to bring them back and has spoken positively about the willingness of many players to play?
Is it the fact that hes simply explained that he gave the board his targets and what happens will happen and he will play with the squad he has?

I'm sorry but you might want to read less of the tabloids and tweets like many caf members.

Calling bs on you.

Pep is the problem. Without Pep at City, Mou would have won the Prem in 2018.

Mou has to break Pep the same way he did in 2012.

If not Pep, then someone else, you can’t automatically give the title to us. Truth is, City are levels above us in terms of investment - and that is the reason why they have better players and a better, modern manager.

In the first 4 seasons after Ferguson's departure, we averaged 67.25 pts in the Premier League with reaching top 4 on one occasion. Last year we comfortably finished 2nd on 81 pts behind a team that set a new point record (after spending £665.37m in the last 3 summers). Chances are, they're not going to reach triple digits again and the gap will be smaller between the two teams come the end of the season.
The points we earned far outstripped the points expected. That's great if we win the title. It's not great to use as a barometer for expectations heading into the next season.

In fairness Pep talks a good game re youth, how much did we see of them playing last year?

Looking at the negativity and overreactions on here lately, goes to show how spoilt some of our fans have been. It's only natural though. This time was gonna come sooner or later, where we aren't one of the best anymore. I feel some need to learn to deal with it better.

The sooner this miserable anti fooball bully leaves the better as far as i'm concerned.
I've never liked or wanted the guy here but was hoping to be proven wrong.
Not the right fit for UNITED and his style of management/coaching peaked a long time ago and are best left there.I'd prefer to take a hit on the next 3 years and build for the future with a new manager/philosophy more in the traditions of 'the beautiful game'
Football is about playing forward encouraging players to express themselves.Good management is getting the best out of individuals not my way or out.
We don't appear to have a philosophy or structure, a way of playing, to our team, squad, club.

Not excited about the start of the season which says it all really.

IMO

Yeah. I'm lucky enough to have been born to the best period in the clubs history. Through looking back and from what my dad says we were shite in the seventies and eighties, plated in the second tier at one stage

This is a joke, we have definitely regressed with Jose as manager when it comes to keeping possession and passing the ball under pressure and it doesn't look like it's gonna get any better.

Well we are obviously training on it in the video and have hired personelle internally to aid on it in 2 vital areas so I'm quite sure it will get better.

Mourinho ball. No seriously. Look at City doing it in the tweet below. That's how it's supposed to be done.

City have a style that depend on this style of play. Jose doesn't.

well said. hiring a "fashionable" manager isn't the answer. possible only Simeone could do better with the current squad of players.

if people went position for position against our 93/95, 99 or 2008 squads the answer will stare everyone back in the face

Really? When was it last better than we saw last season?
The football under Van Gaal was really dull but it seemed like we kept possession better under pressure. It's a glaring weakness of ours at the moment.

Nah, at the first hint of pressure under Van Gaal we used to collapse completely. It’s why we conceded so many late goals. We were fine at passing the ball backwards and sideways under no pressure whatsoever, mind you.

Obviously city are better at it, but you are ignoring lot of points here, one biggest is space. ManUtd are playing in smaller circle with too many players, City are playing in bigger space with less players.

Yup.

Serious revisionism going on if anyone thinks otherwise. We had a possession based system until you'd actually want one.

lol lap up whatever the press say why don't you. How many of "peps youths" have broken into the first team in the premier league. its all PR snake oil.

Meanwhile we have Mactomminay, Rashford, Lingard (not young but academy product enhanced by Jose) getting regular game time whilst Pereira, Mitchell and Fosu Mensah are knocking on the door

City just go out and buy another 50m fullback. The press exploit it cause hey united drama sells whilst gullible fans lap it up.

Theres not a single article questioning Peps statements nor a single one pointing out about our academy players in the squad, because pep is the patron saint of football and city give out free things

We’ve also got two keepers in the mix. Although, worryingly, their touch seems better than a few of the outfielders!

Yeah and also we don't even know what's going on. I mean for all we know, they might be just out and still doing this thing lazily whereas City players are in middle of their exercise.
