Wimbledon

Sharapova out. To be fair, she deserved it. Very poor.

Well we have said it before about Sharapova - Nothing special.

Her serve is nowhere to be found at present.

While we don't have a lot of support on here for the idea Baz, that's true of every player in the women's game at the moment. The standard is very poor, and Ivanovic is essentially #1 by default, because a far better player(Henin) retired.

That's not to do her a disservice, she is #1 on merit, and I'm not seeking to belittle that, just that the women's game doesn't have one top top player left. They are all capable of beating each other due to their own mediocrity for the most part. Sharapova and Ivanovic seem to be this year's poster girls, but you only have to look at them both in this tournament to know they have big problems in their respective games.

Hopefully we'll see a few young players step up in the next years or two and make them raise their game, and prove the doubters(like me)wrong.

Jankovic is even worse. A lay for me next time out

I hope my tip of Rawanska lasts till Next Monday, then we will see her blosom. Into 30's after Sharapova exit. - You also got to fancy the Williams

Bollocks Roddick - Really wanted him to do well.

Get practice for the US open lad and come back stronger

Surprised by Roddick. The road to a repeat of the Federer, Nadal final is getting easier and easier.

An American mate of mine swears that Roddick would be the best player in the world if the US media didn't get on his back. He says it forced Roddick to play winning tennis from an early age, without really working on and developing his game and letting the results follow. Don't really agree with it myself, but he definitely has a heavy burden with the whole of the US banking on him to win things.

Gone are the days of Sampras & Courier, Connors & McEnroe. Roddick & Blake are one trick ponies.

Courier was class, he was a bit of a looper. I remember him reading a book once at the change of ends because he was so fed up with tennis. After the press gave him stick he said something like, "but it was a really good book". Legend.

He won 4 Grand slams in his time which says alot. It wasn't till I went looking at his record to see his achievements did I recognise how good he was

Sharapova out so I have no further reason to watch the ladies. I know theres still Ivanovic but she mightnt be in that much longer.

Shittest Wimbledon in a long time and we're only 3 days in.

With Roddick and Djokovic out, a mens final is inevitable already after the 2nd round. As for the women, probably some bitch called Kxzehchezakyahaovcoava from Serbia or Russia will win it as womens tennis is so inconsistent and shit in general since Henin left.

The Russian Kxzehchezakyahaovcoava was knocked out by Venus Williams in the first round.

Unlucky Vidicious

Mate, I think fewer people in the US pay attention to tennis than soccer over here. The "whole" of the US could care less about this guy. Most of the public probably wouldn't recognize the guy walking down the street.

Roddick sucks, i can't stand watching him. One dimensional player with a big serve and no personality = extreamly boring to watch.

So glad the dog Sharipova is out, listening to her bark with every hit is like listening to someone scraping ice out the freezer. Horrible.

Murray played very well but Hass will be a much tougher game. If he gets through that then he'll probably go onto face Nadal in the quarters? Could be a classic.

Been backing Tipsarevic for a couple of years now...chuffed for him yesterday.

One of the few players who disproves noodle's theory...he seems really sweet off court, "I don't get to play on these courts or beat top 10 players very often so it's nice for me!"

Noodle's theory is a bag of balls, to be fair(that's a sentence I never imagined myself saying). There are very few tennis players who come across as anything but decent and pretty humble. You only have to look at the present top 3 to see that.

 Roddick is rapidly going down hill, rightly so as well. There is only so long you can rely on your serve.

Today is the day Ivanovic gets knocked out lads.

I really like the chinese girl Jie Zheng she is playing. If she turns up like she did in her last match she will be murdered.

Like Sharapova, Ivanovic's serve can go missing.

Andy Murray is looking strong for once at a Grand Slam, too bad he would eventually hit a wall when he faces up with Rafael Nadal.

Poor Murray.

Oh I totally agree. Was just trying to be diplomatic. Both Djokovic and Roddick were very open about choking after their losses. Most tennis players are very honest about their own games and often give their opponents due credit.

Very much unlike footballers.

Anyone remember Justin Gimelstob? Was a pretty average US player a couple of years older than Roddick. He's now a director on the board of the ATP and gave a pretty explosive interview about the women's tour yesterday, surmised in the Daily Mail,

Women tennis players are all sexpots and bitches... U.S. tour director launches amazing sexist rant at Kournikova and Co

The timing is unfortunate as he's due to play Kournikova in an exhibition match next month. Of Kournikova, he had this to say,

'She's a bitch.'

Asked if he hated her, he replied: 'Hate's a very strong word. I just despise her to the maximum level just below hate.'

Mr Gimelstob, who is due to play Kournikova in an exhibition mixed doubles match in Washington next month, then said he wanted to hit her hard with the ball in the midriff when serving at her.

'If she's not crying by the time she walks off the court then I did not do my job,' he added.

Finally, asked if he would ever have an affair with Kournikova, he said: 'Definitely not. I have no attraction to her because she's such a douche. I really have no interest in her... I wouldn't mind having my younger brother, who's a kind of a stud, nail her and then reap the benefits.
'

Hehe, quality.

Absolutely - I'd far rather listen to a top tennis player speak for a couple of hours than pretty much any footballer.

He apologises later though, even though it doesn`t really help.

From that article:

The comments caused such outrage that Mr Gimelstob was forced to apologise while promising to donate an 'undisclosed sum' to the The Women's Sports Foundation.

He said in a statement: 'There is no excuse and I am extremely disappointed in myself. I take full responsibilthatity for all the words that came out of my mouth, and, while I can't take any of them back, I hope my heartfelt remorse can begin to heal the wounds felt by many.

'Among the targets of my venom was Anna Kournikova, not to mention a general disregard and disrespect toward women. They all deserve and have my deepest apologies.

'While I see how it could be implied by my remarks, I assure you I have the utmost respect for women.'

Mr Gimelstob was voted on to the ATP board to represent players' views, in a non-salaried position.

An ATP spokesman said he was not an employee, adding: 'The ATP cannot condone any form of intolerance and Justin Gimelstob's comments last week were unacceptable. However, Justin has done the right thing in apologising publicly to Anna.'

He can`t possibly keep his job can he? Those remarks are as bad as anything else you`ll see.

True. I'd quite happily listen to Safin for a couple of hours, if just to hear all his stories. I remember Pat Cash saying he met Safin in Monte Carlo after a first round game(which he'd won), and he was on the sauce with a load of models. I'd say he's had a bit of a life!

There's loads of tennis players who make great interviews - Agassi, McEnroe, Nastase, even Connors is fascinating in a way. To get to where they got required great individual effort and personality - football players can get away without having any personality these days...

If Federer was to play a Wall at Wimbledon you'd have a feeling he would be able to beat it some how.

Conversely , if Roddick played a wall, you get the feeling he'd still be trying to out-power it long after it was dark and everyone else had gone home.
