Wimbledon 2013

Serena wouldn't get a game against the top 500.

It's much harder to pretend people aren't laughing at me with these alerts now. :(

Physiologically comparing women and men is apples and oranges. They're both playing at the height of their abilities so they should be paid the same. Asking women to play an extra two sets would be daft. It would just diminish the quality. There are some fiscal arguments about paying them less based on crowd numbers, tv audience and sponsorship, but bottom line it's the right thing to do. Equality isn't requiring both sexes to do exactly the same things.

Is it?

Does that also apply to women's football, women's golf, women's motor racing etc? If not, why not?

If you took a top female player whose game has a lot of finesse to it as well as power and put them up against a male opponent where the serve wasn't a supreme weapon you might have a more interesting match.

In any event you'd hold such a contest over three sets like they all play away from the slams IMO.

And the Bryans win. Hold all the 4 grand slams and the olympic gold. Could make it a calendar slam come the US open

feck off Bartoli! Bigger cnut than suarez. fecking ape looking mother fecker! How dare she make our Sabine sad? I swear, I am the most angry I hae been in years! Really bad mood!

I hope Murray wins tomorrow.

I don't even care about tennis. It'd just be funny to piss off the bizarre anti-Murray brigade.

Someone at work the other day was saying about how they blamed Murray's parents for him being how he is...I didn't understand what this meant? ...good at tennis? not an obnoxious media whore?

Think I was put off actually watching any Wimbledon finals ever again last year mind, when it became apparent the whole thing was a kind of celebs being there to be seen as being important enough to be there type affair. The match itself almost seemed like a sideshow.

A bit like yesterday when they didnt show a single replay of that amazing play for the entire rest of the match/program, because they were too busy showing clips of posh people waving.

And this is why your opinion is of no fecking value what so ever. Also, you didn't mention how perfect and hot lisicki is.

I value my own opinion more than people who rate Andy Murray's ability to play tennis on how miserable they perceive him to come across in interviews.

You can't really argue with winning an entire tournament without dropping a single set either. Sorry

I must hold my hands up and say I changed my opinion on Murray completely after last year's Wimbledon final. I was rooting for Federer because I'm a big fan of his and knew it was the last chance he'd get at a Slam, so I was delighted he won it. But Murray's humility and grace -- and humour -- in defeat just totally won me over. I'm now a Murray fan :D He's intelligent, articulate, with a wry sense of humour. I love him.

Yeah Murray converted me last year as well. Nadal is still my guy, but I was rooting for Murray at Wimbledon last year and at the US Open and Aussie Opens and will be hoping for him to do it tomorrow. But still I reckon its Djokovic's to lose should he play at the level we know he can.

Yeah. I don't get the Murray hate. I had him down as a dour cnut purely because he was Scottish but after seeing him put up with some of the shite that passes for journalism he's gone up a notch in my estimation. Just seems a fairly levelled headed guy with no pretensions around him. I'd love to see him win tomorrow.

On another note wasn't it Richard Krajceck that had a rant about female tennis players being porkers? Done nothing to dispell that image today. They're shit TH. I'm sorry but if you're supposed to be a top of your game athlete and your carrying that as a spare tyre then that says a lot about the competition.

I've never really understood the 'anti Murray' thing if I'm honest. If it's because of that comment about 'anyone but England', then I can't believe so many people are not smart enough to realise it was a line completely taken out of context by the media and was actually a light joke shared between Murray and Henman about Scotland failing to qualify the World Cup. The Paraguay shirt thing was a made up story to make something out of nothing. Other people say they don't like is on court demeanour and interviews, but I think a lot of that was because he found it difficult to live a life as both a sportsman and celebrity during his early career. He seems to have made a genuine effort to come across better more recently, and I rather see someone who was slightly boring over someone constantly craving attention from the media. Like CassuisClaymore said, he comes across as levelled headed and given that apart from Henman, we've had no one from Britain even close to winning for ages on the men's side, it's surprising that people would rather Djokovic win tomorrow.

I don't understand why female tennis players don't play 5 sets. The pros are more than capable of it, especially if they trained for it.

It's not a straightforward comparison because rallies last over a third longer in the women's game.

For me the main argument against equal prize money is that the men's competition brings in more revenue. Not that I give a shit, it just makes me laugh when people get in a state when somebody expresses an opinion that female tennis players shouldn't get equal prize money, as if they'd just said something like female teachers or doctors shouldn't earn the same as men. The thing with sport and prize money is that men and women aren't doing the same job. They compete in separate tournaments and there's no more reason why men and women in tennis should receive equal prize money than there is for any other sport.
Well obviously if they want equal pay they should play in a unisex tournament.

 There is not a chance Serena would beat anyone better than about 300 on the ATP tour..
I doubt she'd do that well:

A master promoter of himself and of tennis, Riggs saw an opportunity in 1973 to make money and to elevate the popularity of a sport he loved. Although 55 years old at the time, he came out of retirement to challenge one of the world's greatest female players to a match, claiming that the female game was inferior and that a top female player could not beat him even at the age of 55.[1] Riggs first challenged King, but when she declined, Court stepped in. At the time Court was 30 years old and the top female player in the world. In their May 13, 1973, Mother's Day match in Ramona, California, Riggs used his drop shots and lobs to keep Court off balance. His 6–2, 6–1 victory[2] landed Riggs on the cover of both Sports Illustratedand Time magazine.[3][4]

A fourth event dubbed "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open[19]between the 203rd ranked male player Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. The match took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park.[20] First Braasch - who was 30 at the time - took on Venus Williams and beat her 6–2. He also played Serena Williams and won 6–1 after the Williams sisters, who were 17 and 16 at the time, said they could beat any man ranked 200 or worse. [21] Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance" as he claimed he had played like someone ranked 600 in order to keep the game "fun."[22]

The tournament is geared to be more male-centric to begin with. The schedule is set to give more attention to male players. Also I don't really see why you think they could play the same amount of sets just because they train as hard, women's anatomy is different.

Edit: also I'm willing to be that Serena Williams could beat Andy Murray with ease over 5 sets so as others have said, it's not their fault.

I'm fairly sure the Williams Sisters played some no name male tennis player when they were younger and got destroyed. It was before they hit their peak though

I've got a bet on Djoko at 6/4 that I could lay for half-profit at 4/6. Loth to do it I think he'll win.

Don't worry if Murray doesn't win it this time as he and Djokovic are likely to be in the final of this for many years to come so he'll have other chances.

Unless Rafa can put in a proper preparation for the grass season then the top 2 are going to dominate Wimbledon and probably the hard courts for the next few years. Personally I can see Djokovic and Murray meeting again in September at the US Open final and then again at the Aussie Open presuming they go into the tournaments as 1 & 2 seeds.

Aye. That's what I meant when I said this is his window. He should be hitting 2/3 years at his peak now and he'd really want to take a few grandslams in that time. Djokovic is the better player but he's got the game to beat him on his day.

Both Murray and Djokovic are 26. Most (but not all) players are in decline by the time they reach 29 or 30, so they have at most two or three years left to play at the peak of their powers. Rafa's already in physical decline at 27 and except on clay he will not terrify the top seeds.

And well done to Bartoli. She was the best player during the tournament.

What time does the final start? 200? I'm trying to figure out when I need to wake up...

Bartoli looks a lot better off court.

Anyway, I hope Djokovic wins today and I think he'll do it. If he brings his top form he should win this one. But you never know, with the crowd totally on murray's side, it could give him a boost in the important moments.

How can any British people not want Murray to win? Don't we want winners in this country?

I think that one of the issues is that Murray is Scottish. In a couple of years time there is a good chance that he will be representing a different country altogether. I would imagine that Murray would probably vote to stay in the Union, all the other English based Scots that I know would vote that way if they could. Murray will certainly have benefited greatly from being British, in sponsorship terms I bet that it has earned him a few more million.

Then you have his personality, it isn't something that bothers me. I actually think that he is uncomfortable in front of television cameras when he is talking. I would be amazed if he is as dour in real life.

I am English and I did want Federer to beat him last year as Fed is my favourite tennis player ever. My heart went out to Murray after that defeat. I totally respect his achievements and I am always surprised at how so many people chose to denigrate those achievements as Murray has come up short against some of the very finest tennis players to have ever lived.

It makes me laugh when people question how he pulled a girl like that too. He is second best in the world in a much admired profession and he is a multi millionaire. He operates on a level that very few people do. I am sure that there are a lot of women find that attractive.
