Wimbledon 2013

Sixpence, you know women don't play tennis for your personal sexual kicks?

Bad final, Lisicki going to pieces. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit more entertaining.

Wasn't he the very first one who she thanked?

Some of the remarks in here particularly the bitterly repetitive nature of them are out of order.

Yeah exactly. Someone said Bartoli was "handed" the trophy when the fact is she was much better and absolutely destroyed Lisicki. Then people feel the need to criticise her in every way, including her serve. You're right in that she was the first one she thanked.

Because the men put more effort in. How can women earn what they earn for an hours knock around and some men's matches can last over four hours. If they made women's matches the same, so be it.

I don't understand why female tennis players don't play 5 sets. The pros are more than capable of it, especially if they trained for it.

The trophy is a plate so that the winner of the women's final can use it to serve a sandwich to the winner of the men's tomorrow.:nervous:

I can't believe Bartoli gets £1.4m for that. And either Murray or Djokovic get the same tomorrow for a possible 5 hour 5 setter.

Hopefully the mens final is more competitive. Although Murray will need to play a lot better to match Djokovic on current form.

It's the difference in serving. Men's serves usually result in much shorter points which is why they can finish a best of five in the same time as women finish a best of three.

Love how you mention what Bartoli gets as being unjust but make no mention of Lisicki's earnings. Bet she completely deserves every last penny as opposed to big bad Bartoli?

Anyway I don't have any problems with them getting the same money. The winners may get obscene totals but for a lot of the smaller players it's probably already a struggle to get by sometimes and having their winnings reduced wouldn't help that. Not their fault they don't play 5 sets.

For me the main argument against equal prize money is that the men's competition brings in more revenue. Not that I give a shit, it just makes me laugh when people get in a state when somebody expresses an opinion that female tennis players shouldn't get equal prize money, as if they'd just said something like female teachers or doctors shouldn't earn the same as men. The thing with sport and prize money is that men and women aren't doing the same job. They compete in separate tournaments and there's no more reason why men and women in tennis should receive equal prize money than there is for any other sport.

Bartoli beat nobody on the way to the final and got a huge helping hand to win the thing from Lisicki having a meltdown. Lisicki took out most of the best players in the tournament, so she certainly deserves whatever money she gets.

I thought I mentioned it earlier, that was what set this debate off, someone said Lisicki got £500,000 and I said it was embarrassing.

Are you a female tennis player? Do you know how much effort they put in to training and preparation? Have you given up having children and a real life in your 20s?

That's right, I bet more people will watch tomorrow's final than todays. Also women teachers and doctors are doing the same job as men. I wouldn't expect women footballers to get the same money as men unless they played in a men's league.

It's not Bartoli's fault what the draw is, and she was much better today. You can't blame Lisicki's performance on anyone but her today. She was terrible up until her mini-comeback and Bartoli destroyed her and walked all over her. It's honestly pathetic that you're taking these jibes at Bartoli just because she was the much better player and deserved winner. It wouldn't have mattered who they were against up until today. She had won 2 out of 13 games at one point.

Just like Bartoli took out Henin in 2007 and froze up in the final then...

That is just retarded.

Of course not, but if they put in the same amount of training then surely they could play the same amount of sets. I have a little boy and have to work. I would love to be able to travel all over the world playing tennis.

Congrats to Bartoli. Wasn't a really good final and her draw was soft, but she really deserved it after 2007. It's probably the only slam she'll ever win, but Lisicki is 23, so she should have chances for a few more, unless her career nosedives.
Was rooting for Lisicki to win yesterday, but the sheer number of people rooting for Lisicki over Bartoli based solely on the fact that she's hot was a bit irritating and I'm glad Bartoli won silencing the crowd who have been shitty to her most of the tournament.

The tournament is geared to be more male-centric to begin with. The schedule is set to give more attention to male players. Also I don't really see why you think they could play the same amount of sets just because they train as hard, women's anatomy is different.

Edit: also I'm willing to be that Serena Williams could beat Andy Murray with ease over 5 sets so as others have said, it's not their fault.

Do you really believethis? :wenger: There's no evidence to show that Serena would ever be able to handle Murray's serve and speed of his shots when you consider movement is not her strongest suit.

 Even Serena herself said she wouldnt stand a chance

Physiologically comparing women and men is apples and oranges. They're both playing at the height of their abilities so they should be paid the same. Asking women to play an extra two sets would be daft. It would just diminish the quality. There are some fiscal arguments about paying them less based on crowd numbers, tv audience and sponsorship, but bottom line it's the right thing to do. Equality isn't requiring both sexes to do exactly the same things.

Bartoli may have won Wimbledon, but Lisicki is the true champion today. Lost the tennis, but won our hearts.

You sound like a liverpool fan. Be honest, the only reason you wanted Lisicki to win is because you believe she's better looking than Bartoli?

 There is not a chance Serena would beat anyone better than about 300 on the ATP tour.

As for the final, Bartoli thoroughly deserved to win, Lisicki just couldn't handle the pressure on the day. Let's not forget also, that Bartoli didn't drop a set throughout the entire tournament.

Bartoli played spme fantastic stuff, she really took her chances, totally destroyed lisickis rythym and confidence. She hits such flat, angled forehands that lisicki couldn't deal with... She was finding the toughest spots on the court to reach and with such flat power, her backhand down the line wasn't bad either.

Still a shit final, though.

How come such a neutral (by that I mean it's nothing like football in terms of passion and support) sport like tennis can bring some of the most embarrassing comments on the caf ? That comment about Serena beating Murray, what the feck

A worse returner than Bartoli may have allowed Lisicki back into the match for all that she was beset with nerves or uncertainty, on the day Marion's strengths were perfect for the occasion.

It's not that she was without form, and the best tennis of her career has taken place at Wimbledon, whilst Lisicki's victories over high ranked players rightly gave her momentum i think some in the media overlooked the fact that her opponent could thrive out there too.

Sabine's game wills till suit this tournament very well, if she learns how to focus herself in as final and is patient i'd expect to see her out on Centre Court on the second Saturday of the championships again.

Bartoli is one of the sport's characters who was also a good tactician with her shot as much as anything else, a creditable winner.
