Wimbledon 2012

Del Potro is perpetually injured. He started off so brightly (he has more Grand Slams than Murray :lol::lol:) but has been blighted by injury ever since. A shame; he was the only player on tour who could go toe-to-toe with Nadal at the baseline and actually stand a fair chance.

Umm Djokovic?!!

And I find Serena William's post match interviews incredibly annoying. Why does she have to sign off with such a cheesy bye? Can't she give a normal interview like the other players?

I wondered if someone would mention that :p

Djokovic can beat Nadal, as we've seen, but he doesn't do it by going toe-to-toe with him on the baseline. Nadal's game has an awful lot of finesse, but there's also a fierce amount of brute strength involved. Djokovic beats Nadal using other methods, the same way Murray can (sometimes) beat Nadal through sheer tenacity and simply returning everything that comes at him.

My point was that Del Potro, however, can beat Nadal at his own game.

I haven't followed tennis since the Agassi/Sampras days, and even then was just their matches, but there seems to be an abundance of sexy female tennis players these days.

Shame none of them can play any good tennis though.

Watching the match between Kerber and Lisicki. Awful stuff. The former is distinctly average, has made about 2 winners in 2 sets. The latter ridiculously hit and miss, with every other shot hitting the net.

Serena would destroy the pair of them, probably at the same time if necessary!

Leftie won, mainly due to the other one making mistake after mistake. I wish there was a way both could lose.

Ferrer v Murray should be a good contest. Both appear to be showing decent form.

Not seen the schedule, but Murray should be banging down the BBC and Wimbledon draw to get on Centre Court first, as with the way these two play, could well be a long five-setter

What other methods does Djokovic use? He's pretty similar to Nadal. They're both baseliners. Nadal is a defensive one whereas Djokovic mixes it up a little more (but is pretty similar all the same). For all Nadal's muscle he's a defensive tennis player who "outlasts" players in rallies.

Del Potro is the other extreme. He's probably the most aggressive baseliner around who goes for huge shots all the time. When it works a defensive baseliner will never live with him.

But I don't get how Del Potro's game is anything like Nadal's. They're the polar opposite's as far as baseliners go.

Del Potro's game is nowhere even remotely close to Nadal. Djokovic and Murray are slightly superior and hugely inferior versions of Nadal but Del Potro is completely different. Huge serve and huge winners from the baseline who just blew Nadal apart in the USO

stopped reading there...

Djokovic is pretty much solid from both wings, even more so from the backhand wing, which helps him put pressure on Nadal on his forehand. Pretty much the sole player at the moment who can do so.

Delpo is solid from both sides as well, and has more power than Djokovic, but his fitness and injury record is what prevents him brake into the top 5.

What about Tsonga? Didn't he go "toe-to-toe" with Nadal in that Australian Open semi-final a few years back and win?

He was awesome in that game and almost as impressive in the French against Djokovic. He just choked at the critical time. As great as Nadal is he can be overpowered - Rosol, Tsonga and Soderling have all done this to him.

Delpo's achilles heel is his lack of movement. I thought he was 50/50 against Ferrer but the Spaniard just moved him round the court with ease.

I think he matches up well against Murray as he doesn't make mistakes. He hasn't got the power Nadal has but his movement is excellent.

Djokovic is an all-court player and can be great from the baseline and come in too. He is aggressive and has great defense also.

Nadal is a grinder who needs about 30 shots to win each point as he wears his opponents down or moves them around so much they are exhausted after 5 minutes. He only comes to the net if he has a 100% safe volley or to shake hands. Being left handed helps too and he is a manufactured player (right-handed but made to play left-handed) who has developed so much spin to make life as difficult as possible for every one else. He can be overpowered though by big-hitters who are on their game and Djokovic does it because he also has a great 2 handed backhand. Nadal has no finesse at all other than the occasional drop shot once in a blue moon.

Murray is also an all court player but he does not have as much aggression or balls as Djokovic. Del Potro thumps the ball from everywhere but his movement is not great.

Of course Roger is the classic player and in his prime was virtually unbeatable other than on clay by Nadal. I believe the Roger of 2006/07 would beat all of these guys on all surfaces now but unfortunately he was always the second best clay court player in the world. Now if Roger had a 2-handed back hand Nadal would not have beaten him so often but then Roger would perhaps not have won as many other titles as his one-hander helped him win Wimbledon so often. It's too bad the court surfaces have slowed down so much as that just plays into the hands of Nadal and all the other baseliners. I bet Sampras, Edberg, Becker etc would have a tough time at Wimbledon now as it's so unrewarding to the attacking player.

I pretty much agree with every word of this. Federer at his prime was sport at its finest. anf yes, the courts slowing down has played into the hands of the baseliners and hurt the game greatly. Infact, federer would naturally like to come forward a lot more but the courts make sure he has to conform and basically become a baseline himself.

I really don't think Sampras would do very well on the courts of today which is a terrible shame.

Well I got told!

I'll stick to simply watching it in future and not trying to sound smart :p

I do love Del Potro, though. Love the way he plays, and also that he's Argentine!

Fed's making short work of this one. Youzhny looks flat, disinterested and void of any ideas.

Rain stops play.

Ferrer is playing well after blowing a 5-2 lead in the first set. 4 straight points in the tie break

Good match so far. Ferrer playing the pressure points really well. Murray will truly have to earn the win today! I predict this will go to 5

Ferrer has been doing his best to bottle this all night. First set and the second.

Of course Murray doesn't deserve any praise for digging in and winning that second set
