I dont buy the notion of buying him so Spurs couldnt have him. Spurs aren't exactly our title rivals are they? Taking Soldado off of them would have made more sense, you know, a striker!
I don't think we'll be title challengers this season, far too many new players to bed in but we've hardly been streets apart the last 2 seasons. And the point isn't to stop an already present title challenger but to prevent a new one arising.
Anyway, nobody has said the only purpose is to stop us getting him. You still improve yourself but stop a potential direct rival from improving as well. Win win. I've barely seen Willian play so tbh I find it difficult to get too upset about losing him but a lot of people say he's a good player so I'll take their words for it. But from what I have seen, he's a creative player that plays in the front 3. A player that would significantly improve us (because we don't really have a player like that at the moment). And at Chelsea, would join one of 7 or so other players currently in that position.
Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Schurrle,Willian and De Bruyne. 6 players, most of whom are around the same level of talent (on paper) and I'm guessing most of whom will expect to be playing most games, certainly the first 5.
I wonder what Moses and Marin are thinking of their moves as well.
And of course you wouldn't have gone for Soldado because you're still going for option A.
I also don't think Willian has all that much say in where he goes. His owner decides that for him.
