Willian | Signed for Chelsea

2 top players for every position, that's what he's talked about since he first went to Chelsea. Hazard/Schurrle, Oscar/Willian, Mata/De Bruyne.

From Mourinho's POV it's good stuff but from the players' I don't know. Only Hazard and Oscar are sort of safe in terms of playing thanks to their talent and performances. I have no idea where Mata stands in his plans.

You'd have to think those three are clear first choice until one of them gets injured or loses a bit of form. Would be harsh on De Bruyne if Willian goes ahead of him in the pecking order as he looks like he could slot into this team without a problem.

It's a luxury to have 2 players each for those 3 positions, but how is he gonna give them games to balance things out and to keep the players happy?

Signing all these players is all good and well but the problems will come in the big games, they will all want to play and some of these players are too good to sit on the bench.

Curious how is going to succeed at keeping them all happy ?

I can see De Bruyne and Schürle being put on the bench, and accepting it, because they knew they were going to have to fight to get into the team anyhow. But which ever one of Mata, Oscar, Willian and Hazard would end up on the bench would be more than pissed about it i think. I don't think it will be Hazard, i also don't think Willian will be benched often (cost alot of money). So either Oscar or Mata are going to fall out and become unhappy with the situation. My bet is on Mata.

Their 68th (first team) player signed since they became Chelski.

In comparison with our 43 players signed in the same period.

Liverpool and City beat Chelsea though, with their 69 and 75 players signed.

The only time Sir Alex has done anything like that is when he sold Stam, and he admitted it was wrong (and a little spiteful). The rest - Beckham, van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo etc. - all left because they wanted to. Willian + Rooney for Mata will surely improve the team on the whole but it's not a very clever move, we can all see that.

He did ditch Veron after a very good preseason and having stated that Veron wasn't leaving Old Trafford. However, it turned out a fortunate move as Veron crocked his back early on at Chelsea.

If the logic is 2 players for each position, can someone explain why he hasn't strengthened at the back because a back-two of Cahill and Terry won't inspire any confidence, especially against the top teams in Europe.

There is a small matter of midfield as well. Ramirez, Lampard, Essien, Mikel don't really scare the opposition, I'd suppose, even if that's like 2 players for 1 position.

he's a bit of a hypocrite talking about Moyes saying Rooney was told he was 2nd best, when he's practically said the same himself in relation to Mata since hes added Willian

Not sure a great pre-season is really comparable to being one of the best players in your team for the last couple of years.

True, I don't understand why he hasn't invested in a defensive midfielder. Mikel and Essien are the only two midfielder he has that are capable of playing as DMs and neither of them is really that good.

Obviously copying Fergie. The next trend in football will be about playing without central midfielders; Fergie has started it, Mourinho's already a follower.

Funny, that, because Barca and Spain are going the opposite way. It's like betamax vs VHS. Central midfielders in all positions vs No central midfielders at all.
