William Carvalho

Is he actually any good? In the tiny snippets I've seen he looked quite lumbering for a defensive midfielder, but I haven't seen very much of him at all.

It makes some sense. Sporting has been in a dire financial situation for a while and it was rumoured for most of the season that he would be sold. They could have been semi-bluffing by saying that they wouldn't sell him for less, in hopes that someone paid the release clause. Benfica and Porto have done it several times throughout the years...

Just speculating though. Could just be bollocks. Nothing in Portugal about this yet.

Herbert, Ducker, Ladyman and Ogden.... They've been briefed.
It's weird. Why we do that now? Could be a smoke screen. Juve 's playing hard ball and this is us showing them we have other options.

Didn't he play only three games and two of which he came of the bench?

Only played two games. Came on at half time against the USA and started against Ghana. Not sure why people keep bringing up his World Cup performances to be honest.

Also do we have any agreement with Sporting Lisbon in terms of matching offers if someone else bid for their players?

I am not sure if his defensive side that is being praises here is good as it is. The PL is 4x faster than in Portugal. I don't see what others see in him.

Matic and Fernando have adapted alright and both came in straightaway.

Cheers. Is he box to box or a more defensive player? He's also very young so will i
I believe he's purely a defensive midfielder, but I've seen in him games/highlights where he charges forward the length of the field and back consistently, so maybe he's a bit of both? Not 100% sure, but he fits exactly what we need in midfield regardless.

Personally I think he's very good. Perhaps you could say he's "lumbering" at his slowest moments, but just because he's not running at 100% all the time doesn't mean he's doing anything wrong. He's very, very good at closing off spaces and intercepting, and if you try to dribble in about a 3/4 metre radius of him you're going to be in deep shit.

He's built like a brick shithouse, has a good bit of pace when he gets up to speed, can pick a pass and ping accurate long balls. There's all the physical/technical attributes, but more than that when he's on the pitch he does the right thing an awful lot of the time, and looks an intelligent player, rather than a headless chicken like most of our current MF's. I think he'll be a great PL midfielder one day.

Just a thought but perhaps we've briefed the press to put the scare on Juve. Wouldn't surprise me if we are trying to force them into a deal..

It's a distinct possibily. Otherwise, I don't see what we have to gain by giving this info to the press.

Another possibility is that the info came from the agent, who's trying to drump up in interest in his player. But I dount all the big papers would go with the story on his word only.

We scouted this guy a number of times under Moyes IIRC, I'd suspect Mendes being his agent can only be good for us too.

If I'm honest as much as I rate Vidal, this guy from a positional, age and price angle makes much more sense.

Record said this morning that we were still interested but there was nothing more than that, there will be more on it tomorrow in Record & O Jogo if it is genuine stuff.

Hope it's true anyway as the price seems to have come down to €30m from what's been reported in Portugal recently and he'd be a cracking signing either way. Already a quality player and will only get better, just what we need in midfield.

Cheers. Is he box to box or a more defensive player? He's also very young so will i

More defensive.

His range of passing is not as good as Scholes, Carrick or even players we are linked to ie Koos
Kroos as dm? We need someone to protect the defence and allow our attacking players more freedom. Mata/Kagawa's passing is extremely good, that will be fine enough with a class dm behind them.

Maybe the clubs way of telling fans that Vidal is off, we'll give this one a go, but we could end up with the third choice in Blind.

Well no shit! Kroos is one of the top 5 CMs in the world today and Scholes is one for the game's greatest CMs. Carrick has enough experience playing next to Scholes to know how to pass. You can't blame Carvalho for being able to pass to their levels when he is just 22 and starting off.

If we bring in Carvalho, I'd happily see United finally give up on Vidal. Carvalho looks the real deal.

They could build a much bigger and better pavilion if this is true. Stop that digger!

My preference is in that order (only linked names)

Vidal
Carvalho
Strootman
Blind
De Jong

Vidal would be the imidiate improvement we should look at to get back to winning games and into the CL this season. Carvalho would be the long term view, going to be a beast i think and more the type of player to partner Herrera, especially with the defensive problems being our main concern.

Either of them would make me happy. Strootman als well but there are the Fitness concerns. The latter two would be Backup solutions

Rather overpay for someone like him with possible big potential than Blind anyway.

They're saying he's available at £24m. I don't think Blind would cost much cheaper either. I don't know much about this lad but his release clause was never going to get met and this price, from what I've heard about him sounds reasonable. Think Arsenal are in for him too.

We need a player who can distribute the ball, defend/protect backline and score goals. There is no DM any more at top teams, you have to do all of these aspects. Vidal is the best in the World right now and has more stamina than Carvalho.

There is no comparison to Vidal, Vidal is world class but Carvalho is a promising talent in my eyes-we don't need any more of those.

LVG likes Strootman who is plays similarly to Carvalho, wait until Jan to buy Strootman and buy Vidal now.

If we get him and Vidal or even one of them plus letting Cleverley go. It will be the greatest transfer window ever.

Nothing on our media about this. Our William Carvalho topic on the Sporting forum hasn´t updated since 4pm. The only Sporting related news on the media is that we bought a french U20 international from Bordeaux named Hadi Sacko. And the cut price detail, i highly doubt this for two reasons, our President being a hard negotiator and the fact that we only have 60% of his rights (thanks to our former President again, no Doyen involved this time though).

I´m highly skeptical that our President would let him leave now, unless it´s a really good deal. Carvalho´s influence on the team is staggering. Our best player and the engine of our team. If we sell him and don´t get a decent replacement, we will have a very hard time on the champions league and on our domestic campaign.

The thing with Vidal is that, assuming Van Gaal wants Strootman and we sign him in January or next Summer, we'd have a lot of top quality box to box midfielders and no real specialist no.6s or "masters of incidental pressing" as Van Gaal calls them.

If we signed Carvalho, we'd essentially be signing the long term replacement for Carrick, which wouldnt be the case with Vidal, and we could still go for Strootman and not worry about overloading on one type of midfielder.

To be honest, I'd be delighted with either at this point.

I fecking love it when the media has been briefed  It just means we're up to something. Whether it's true, or it's a smoke screen for someone else.

His style probably compliments Herrera more than Vidal. He'd definitely give us a good link between the defence and the midfield. It'll be good to have a big brute in the midfield for once. Would be awesome to see someone being able to stand up to the physicality of Toure.

Let it happen

This is a serious point, distribution of the ball is crucial in build up play. We are comparing with other top midfielders in the world, no? I thought our club contends with other top midfielders. Like I said, I had enough of buying promising talents-we need world class talent. Kroos and Scholes were much better at Carvalho at 22 (Kroos is 24 by the way)

A midfield three of Carvalho, Herrera and di Maria would be awesome. So much balance alongside quality in midfield, when was the last time we actually had that? He'd also benefit our CB's so much; they'd always have a pass open as he'd come deep, and he'd actually screen them with protection being an anchor.

As long as he is capable of breaking play and passing to Herrera or Mata he will be perfect. Them two will take care of the creative side, we need someone to control the game.

You are aware that Carvlaho is a different type of player compared to Kroos and Scholes? I dont even know why are you comparing them?

p.s. people should give up on that nonsense of getting Strootman in january.
