William Carvalho

Of course they are different players, i was just answering that in a straight choice i´d pick Kroos. I´m not adressing United needs, just talking about players value. Look i´m Carvalho´s biggest fan (best player in my club atm) but i´d be mad to pick him instead of Kroos, if given choice. Carvalho has one year of portuguese league, Kroos CV speaks for itself.

Yes agreed, and United do need creativity, but Carvalho offers stability and security, it's hard to say which I would prefer, it's easier to go by what player has the most medals, I think both would be vital components though, Carvalho will be one of those players that does his job very well, doesn't make a nuisance of himself so he won't really go noticed on the pitch much, but he's a player when, if he's not playing, you notice his absence.

Sounds like a midfield version of Rio

Actually in his play style he is a little similar to a Rio, interesting you should say that (talking Rio in his prime here, but Carvalho seems slightly better on the ball too).

That description makes him sound rather a lot like Carrick to me to be honest. And we could do worse than having a 21 year old Carrick with more strength and mobility

Our midfield was basically our weakest sector in last year´s team that finished 7th. Carvalho brought stability, defensive cohesion and basically transformed our team with his influence. He also has very good tactical awareness (very tactically disciplined player), ability to pressure, disrupt opponents attacks and is very useful on set pieces due to his size and good positioning. Thanks to his defensive support our center backs have been performing much better in comparison to last year (and obviously the new manager work). The result is that we are very close to passing from 7th to 2nd this year and gaining direct entrance to the Champions league. He is in the running for player of the year in Portugal.

I'm hopefully going to post this exact same thing in this thread next year and replace the word Portugal for England.

Yeah i see what you did there and after reading it again, i see alot of similarities between last year´s Sporting team and this year´s United. Hopefully he will have the same influence, if he does move to Manchester.

I'm not usually one to concern myself with the cost, but is he really worth the £38m fee branded about?

Depends how loyal he is, do you question the £30M we payed for Rio when he was at leeds? or has he payed for himself over the years?

No. I already wrote this, i think the fair evaluation would be between 25 to 30 mil (this could be reach with addon objectives). This 38m£ valuation has already been explained by me. It´s basically a new policy by Sporting´s President to put 45 to 60 million euros release clauses on our talents, to prevent the big clubs of trying to lure them on the cheap (like it happened in past with Quaresma to Barcelona for example). Players in Portugal usually have release clauses but in the deals everything is settled by negotiations.

Hard to say for sure but given the situation we find ourselves in, regarding the midfield, we really dont have much choice than to splash the cash as well as take some risks.

Oh you won´t have that problem with William. He is a very humble, low profile, discret person. Not a fan of the spotlight like other Sporting youth talents. He has been extremely loyal to Sporting and will only leave to prove himself in a top club in a more demanding league. It´s healthy ambition.

Well it depends how good he is as well. Rio was a great buy because he became one of the best defenders in the world with us, as well as because of his loyalty. £38m would be a waste if we bought Carvalho and had him for 10 years and he was never as good as we wanted him to be.

The Jorge Mendes PR machine now sees this player with a 38m price tag. So good is Jorge at making his wares desirable we now have swathes of United fans who have likely never seen him play adamant that he is an essential purchase whatever the cost.

I wonder if anyone could make a list of the Mendes brokered mega money moves so we could compare and contrast the fortunes of these players once moving to a top European league.

From the list:
CR
Falcao
Thiago Silva
Diego Costa
Di Maria
Pepe
Coentrao
Nani
....

The evidence is inconclusive it seems. I see no satisfactory pattern one way or the other.

so based on that this carvahlo kid could could be sublime or ridiculous

If Google knows something more than we do, which they probably don't, they have gone and added Carvalho to the United roster. Wikipedia stated a few weeks ago that a deal had been done and he would join United in the summer. Funnily enough, that has since been taken down.

Goes head to head with Bebe this weekend in the Portuguese Liga. I will be tuning in for that one.

Which should give some people perspective of the league he is playing in considering Bebe is getting on quite well over there.

Or could mean that Bebe is actually playing well.

Yeah just like Fernandinho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Suarez et al started out in the mighty BPL . The Fellainis of this world are always better than those plying their trade in Holland, Portugal and Russia, brilliant logic that .

I said it should give people perspective. Which it should. I didn't say anything about players not being able to adjust and blossom in a stronger league.

Love the Jones pic on google, never gets old.

Going to Paços it´s kinda like going to the Britannia in cold night. Perhaps without the cold but with a terrible pitch, a physical team with a Walters wannabe and even a crappy full back doing Delap trademark throw ins. We have won 1 time in the last 5 years. I´m afraid of Bebe going against Cedric (our right back), he´s been in a bad run of form.

Have you seen him enough? If yes, what are your views on him?
