It does no one a service to be carried away with optimism. Zaha has the potential to nail that right wing but he'll have to earn as from the start (and specially the tough opening 5-6 fixtures) Moyes will probably trust more experienced wingers.

He'll have to earn his place, of course, but if Valencia doesn't improve his game then imo Zaha will quickly step up. It's not a case of getting unduly carried away with optimism; simply the recognition of a young player of great talent and potential being ready to make his mark on the team. Zaha can play from either wing remember, so he's not just competing with Valencia but with Nani and Young also, all three of which have big question marks over their heads in the squad right now for various reasons. It's perfectly reasonable to be optimistic about Zaha making an immediate positive impact on our season. We're not talking about some youth player with barely any senior experience to his name; Zaha has played 142 senior level games over the last three seasons, won Championship player of the year whilst playing a huge hand in securing promotion for Crystal Palace and cost us £15m.

I guess SAF got carried away too then when he paid £15m for him.

Come back in twelve months time and tell me I was wrong to be excited about Zaha.

You're losing it cider, you do grasp the difference between getting overly excited about him and simply excited, right ? You go from black to white in discussions. I've never said nor implied it's wrong to be excited about him.

I know the difference.

I'm not being overly excited though. Zaha is owed exactly the level of excitement that I'm demonstrating. You're losing it with your undue reservations.

Too much emphasis is sometimes put on past performances. Valencia has been dreadful for a full season for united. It's hardly crazy to suggested a very very talented young player who won awards for his performances last season could do better.

Noone's saying Zaha is proven at the highest level. Just that, looking at the two play football over he last year, they'd pick the one that has played well and with confidence.

My personal opinion is that it's impossible to call these things without watching how Valencia is doing in training.

This was the origin:

To be honest I think he already looks better than Valencia and Young for sure. He is strong, fast, skillful, good eye for pass, he is like combining Nani (skillful), Valencia (strong and fast) and Young (teamwork) into one. He should be one of our first name in team sheet next season. Exciting times ahead!

That is getting carried away, ofcourse IMHO.

Okay yeah he did get carried away. One of the first names on the teamsheet is crazy talk.

I'm really not sure how anyone can conclude he's a better player than Valencia already. Maybe because of Valencia's poor showing last season, which I still think was just a blip and he'll come back firing this season.

I think that Zaha is going to have a bigger impact on our season than Valencia. However, that doesn't mean that I think that he's a better player yet.

Indeed.

Past performances meaning the last 3 seasons or more rather than looking at a most recent period, like just the last season or the last few times we saw the player for united.

We're going to have three flying wingers next season, and it's going to be fecking great.

(And Young. :nervous:)
Or we could have the same terribly performing wingers and one 20 year old talent. Hope it turns out like your post though.

I hope you're right, in that Nani stays and gets on with it.

I'm not really a fan of Young, but I think we could do much worse than having Young as 4th choice. Possibly even 5th choice if Kagawa is considered a left winger at the moment, or at least a 'left forward' or whatever. That is some very exciting options.

I think Nani could find moyes' system, if my understanding of it is correct, a better fit than fergie's and really thrive in it. If he stays, of course.

I agree about Young. I mock him constantly, and I think we overpaid. But provided he's never first choice on the wing, I'm happy we've got him.

Same. I was a bit shocked when we signed him, and felt a little underwhelmed. Then I thought I'd be eating my words after those scorchers he scored in the 8-2 Arsenal game. He's scored some great goals for us. I actually thought he was one of our better players in the 3-2 game against City last season too, and wrongly had a goal chalked off. I think I probably give him too much stick. He's relatively solid, albeit un-glamorous.

I don't understand the stick Young gets, especially when contrasted with the 'on his day one of the best in the world' hilarity often attributed to a positional rival of his.

See if that was said about Welbeck or Nani there'd be five pages of 'you're talking shit' with the bizarre insinuation you must hate Manchester United as a result.

About Young? I'd be surprised if anyone pulls you up on it.

Young is better at defending than attacking...

In his first season his total combined goals/assists from 25 games was 15. Nani's was 18 from 29 games

I've lost count the number of times I'm told how wonderful Nani is due to the goals and assists he produces. Apparently the same logic isn't applied to Young.

It's utter, utter hypocrisy. The way he's treated by some fans is disgraceful.

Young got about 10 of those in his first few games. After that he did pretty much feck all. Comparing Young to Nani is ridiculous as Nani has proved himself to be a fantastic winger throughout the whole season rather than once every ten games aka young.

And 2 of those assists were touching the ball for Rooney free-kicks.

That said, I don't think Young is as bad as people claim

No, you think this is about stats. Fans rate Nani highly because of his technical quality and his ability to do things that only he can do (out of our current wingers). There's no utter hypocrisy involved. Using the stats game won't help if you can't match it with performances. Young is a good winger, but he isn't special. His best game of the season (12-13) was probably against Reading where he produced a master class defensive display and a very good attacking display. Other than that, he's not exactly done much to appease us, so I don't understand your point, which is ridiculous...

That season Young scored 5 goals after February. So how is that 'doing feck all after the first few games' ?

How is this not unfair. 5 of his 8 goals scored after February gets remembered/translated as 'feck all after the first few games'. And Young isn't treated unfairly by some fans?

Convenient you mentioned February, his last goal for us before that was September  Here's his stats page for that season - http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/31810/ashley-young?cc=5739 It's pure shit after his honeymoon period ended.

Young isnt bad at all. He's a fairly good footballer. But he shouldn't first choice for a club of united's standing ( and he isn't). He's a good backup winger

I do hope we actually have first choice wingers next season. All our wingers seem to rotate lots either due to form or injury barring Valencia who plays whether he's playing well or poorly. I'd just like to see two wingers hit form and stake a claim for being the first names on the teamsheet like Rvp and Carrick are.

Young is a very good player when fit. I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise.

At the start of his first season with United Young scored 3 goals and made 6 assists during the opening 7 games.

He then received a couple of injuries and wasn't fully recovered until the middle of February whereupon in 15 games he scored 5 goals and made 5 assists.

Total stats for the 11/12 season were 8g+11a in 33 games (11 of which he wasn't fully fit).

The entire 12/13 season was pretty much a write off for Young due to injuries. However he did manage a run of 5 full games in December in which he made 4 assists.

His statistics when fit are really good. His only problem has been with injuries rather than performance. If fully fit then Young should be first choice for the left wing.

The classic "He was injured" response to a player's poor form. He's a decent winger playing at a club too big for him. Spurs / Liverpool is his level. I'm unsure how Zaha will adapt to the prem in his first season but I'd much rather see him have a go than Ashley Young.

I'm happy to have Young in the squad because he genuinely seems happy to be happy there even if he doesn't start that many matches. It's all about balance and in order to stay competitive you need to have players who accept this role.I'm happy that he's one of our player.
